Just took the trash out and at least 2 blocks of neighbors are still in the dark, despite all the trucks that were out working this afternoon.

CenterPoint on what happened to their map:

"So, as you know, we had a peak of over 900,000 customers that were out. We were seeing, you know, several hundreds of thousands of customers or hits to the page in a single hour. For instance, in one hour, we were seeing over 700,000 hits at one point in time," Alyssia Oshodi, CenterPoint's Director of Communications told KPRC 2 Investigates reporter Joel Eisenbaum. "And so the traffic was just too much. And so, again, we want to be able to test and bring up a replacement that functions properly," Oshodi said.

Really instills confidence...

700k hits an hour (195 per second) on a GIS system will bring it to its knees. That is a lot of bandwidth and compute cycles. It is basically a moderate DDoS attack.

Thank you for saying it. Unless that system is on the cloud and they're paying for scalability, if the back end isn't cached at maybe 10min intervals, a hard hit like that drawing live data is enormous. And expensive.

Getting blasted in Spring again. Wind, heavy rain, lightning. I don't think any hail, though.

STAGE ONE VOLUNTARY WATERING RESTRICTION NO LONGER IN EFFECT

The
City of Houston will rescind Stage One of the City's Drought Contingency Plan, effective May 29, 2024. Houston Public Works recommended rescinding Stage One due to the increased rainfall and steady reservoir levels following recent storms. City Ordinance requires
the mayor to sign off on lifting the voluntary watering restrictions, which occurred today.

City
of Houston water customers are reminded to continue everyday efforts to prevent the loss of water:

Check for and repair all leaks, dripping faucets, and running toilets.

Check sprinkler heads to make sure water is not spraying into the street or directly into storm drains.

Houston
Public Works expresses gratitude to the community for their cooperation and commitment to water conservation. By working together, we can ensure a reliable and resilient water supply for our city now and in the future.

Additional Water Conservation Tips.

Weather channel's futurecast is horrifically bad now. Every single storm immediately moves to the east no matter what the radar shows. This really needs to be changed because far too many people are relying on it. Accuweather's is bad too but it at least doesn't do this and at least follows the actual path the storm is taking.

Fixed most of the leaking in the shop and i am using my tractors bucket to catch whats coming down. Somehow never noticed this dead branch but looks like nature did the hard work of getting it down for me. Pretty good lightning storm and good rains out here.

I'm only laughing because it keeps me from crying.

You and I are definitely on the same circuit. Sitting here without power as well. My wife got the same email.

Oddly enough, the Generator Supercenter people had just left. Can't get that thing installed fast enough.
