Cost of generator, electrical work, fuel, and yearly maintenance vs a little higher insurance premium and cost of spoilage every couple of years (they often just bill back to the vendor).

I was at my parents' in Huntsville yesterday. I was getting off 45 right when it started, and holy ****, I thought I was going to die. Everyone on 45 just stopped. I sat in a line of cars in front of Goree on the feeder road for about ten minutes.

It took 45 minutes to get from the exit to their house. It normally takes three.

Their neighborhood was already flooded with trees down by the time I made it in. My mom and I drove around after the storm cleared, and counted at least ten tall pines that had actually uprooted and fallen over. That's not counting the ones that split and broke.

I have never seen anything like that before.

You just don't understand how great CenterPoint is and how lucky you are. Asking for an outage map is really just a luxury you don't need

I guess a map could make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Then again based on your posting, I doubt it.

They do list exactly how many are currently impacted and how many have been restored. It appears about 5% of those that lost power yesterday afternoon are still without. And considering how many trees are down or still through houses and how many lines were still impacted from the first storm, that's not exactly surprising.

I guess whenever you're done giving a handy to the strawman y'all have erected, the rest of us have realistic customer service criticisms of Center Point that don't involve Houston customers forking over the gross domestic product of New Mexico to "fix".

How do you know that the guy the made the map isn't some crazy glue sniffer? "Building model airplanes", he says. Well, we're not buying it. The outage map maker sneaks into your house once, that's all it takes. The next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser, and your daughter's knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.

Put me down as a huge positive for CenterPoint. They sent me daily updates on the status of repairs, even though;

- I am in Texas City and was not affected by the storm causing all the outages
- I am a Texas-New Mexico customer and not CenterPoint

My sister lives in Crosby and her power went out yesterday. She is out of town and got a text from CP a little after 5 pm telling her that they were aware her power was out and they expected to have it restored by 1:30pm. I must have missed them purchasing Delorean service trucks.

Yeah, those extra IT guys out there working on power lines will get everything back online much faster. This isn't an either/or decision. They are not taking line crews off the job to work on the outage map.

As for what does it matter? If you know it is going to be out for 2-3 days, you can go get ice to clean out the fridge into a cooler, reserve a hotel room, etc. If you know it is going to be 2-3 hours, you don't bother with any of that and just keep the fridge closed.

I can assure those IT guys have roles during these storms. Whether it be setting up all of the technology at all of the staging sites around or working even further behind the scenes.

It takes a LOT to support all of the crews working the lines.

Yep, I have a friend in Supply Chain at CenterPoint. It's in their contract that they're all hands on deck in events like this. So she was out at the temporary man camps helping with distributing food, mapping out lineman schedules, etc.

I know that it sucks no matter what, but I read these posts and think about the fact that everyone on here, even if their power is still off from the first storm, is short of the 14 day outage that my family endured after Ike.

This latest round is the first real break we've gotten. We were SW Side for Ike and Harvey. Moved to the GOOF after Harvey to get some higher ground. Never really needed it with any big storms. Moved back to the SW side last summer and then the GOOF gets it and SW is spared.

I'm not a centerpoint hater by any means. They have a tough challenge given Houston's growth and the frequency of storms.

But maintaining an outage map seems like a pretty bare minimum thing for a utility to do in 2024. Other utilities have no problem doing it.

I think the main benefit accrues to the utility itself. By having a map and estimated restoration times you provide transparency to customers and drastically reduce call center volume. I would think it would also help assist coordination with local authorities and emergency services.

Memorial Day had record heat, where should we set up cooling centers? No idea because we can't see the outage map.

On a personal level I like seeing what the deal is when I have an outage: is it just half the block due to a small distribution line or transformer, or is it an entire section of the city? I also like checking in on the progress and seeing updates on restoration time.

Well yeah...PEC covers a small area of rural Texas while CP covers the 3rd largest metro area in the nation.

I'm not praising CP for their great work but it's not really apples to apples.

you think CNP has no oversight they can't even increase rates without approval from the PUC

In reality even ERCOT is heavily regulated REP's really have no autonomy

The block next to mine went dark after the storm yesterday.

A ton of trucks with tree and line.crews were already out working on it today, been out there for hours.

That block appears to have been an island in our section. Sometimes you're the lucky winner, sometimes you're not.

700k hits an hour (195 per second) on a GIS system will bring it to its knees. That is a lot of bandwidth and compute cycles. It is basically a moderate DDoS attack.
