It pays to be a monopoly. They have a service that everyone needs and zero competition.

Maintaining aging infrastructure in a storm prone area doesn't exactly encourage anyone to want to compete.

The other option is the government takes it all over and then the same people are complaining.

Is that a shot at the people complaining? Interesting take if so.

In 2024, I don't see why those engineers who are supposedly soooooooo smart haven't figured out a cost effective way to make water proof, root proof underground power conduit systems. We sent men to the moon 55 years ago but have not solved this most basic human need.
the ground is an insulator. You can do it in a duct bank, but it gets very big to dissipate the heat correctly.

It's not necessarily just the cost. There's not enough room in the public ROW to fit below grade conduits everywhere. We run gas in public ROW, and we constantly have to cross and re-route because the ROW is crowded with other utilities. Sewer, water, fiber, cable, storm water, etc…

Nobody is claiming we need to bury lines everywhere, but in many many homes, there's an easement for utilities. So arguing about the ROW makes sense in some areas, but in many it's an empty argument.

converting a OH pile line to under ground would be expensive too

Well...were $100 million in the hole so far this year as an alternative and hurricane season hasn't started.

Give CenterPoint time to bleed us drier.

Dumb question but has Centerpoint considered burying the lines? Seems like the best way to avoid wind damage

Centerpoint owns all the lines and charges transportation fees for other providers.

But why don't they bury the lines? I have a shovel and did some yard work last week, don't see why they can't

Hundreds of millions of dollars in cost that would have to be transferred to the customers.

In new neighborhoods the power is below grade, but overhead transmission lines get it there.

Overhead transmission lines have a 100' ROW. You could get that down to 30' if you buried it. There's not 30' of clear ROW along any public road anywhere.

Considering that infrastructure is a legitimate reason for government, I'm not totally opposed to it.

Oooof...
Travis Herzog posted on FB a fe days ago, series of graphics highlighting hurricane hits on Texas during El Nino, La Nina, and what he's calling La Nada -- the transition between El Nino and La Nina.

Quote:

One of the main drivers of the anticipated active hurricane season ahead is the transition from an El Nino ocean pattern to a La Nina Ocean pattern in the Pacific, but do you know how that specifically influences hurricane activity over Texas?
It turns out that since 1950, there have only been 4 hurricane hits in Texas during a La Nina, NONE during an El Nino, but FOURTEEN hurricane hits in Texas during "La Nada," which is a non-technical name for the transitional phase between El Nino and La Nina. And half of those 14 hits occurred right here in Southeast Texas.
In fact, when you look at the list of names that have hit Texas during "La Nada," there are some real bruisers like Alicia, Allen, Beulah, Carla, Harvey, Ike, and Rita. (Just take a look at the zoomed down maps.)
What is the physical explanation for all of this? It boils down to steering currents. During an El NIno, the steering currents tend to push hurricanes away from Texas (or prevent tropical storms that do hit us from becoming hurricanes) while La Nina steering currents tend to favor pathways to Mexico and just east of Texas (think of Louisiana in 2020). But in between the El Nino and La Nina phases, the door is open wider than normal for hurricanes to slide into the Lone Star State.

I hope the heat and humidity we are experiencing today isn't a harbinger of what's coming in July and August. It's just nasty.

It was a mild spring. And now the troll toll must be paid.

Next cool front: Halloween night.

Having a pool is probably the most clutch decision I've ever made. It's worth every damn penny in entertainment value for the kids alone, now add in the respite from the heat and it is truly worthwhile.

We put a $60 sun shade over it and it dropped the temp about 10 degrees.

Dang this weather is miserable. Hot, humid, and the air is like Bangkok or Shanghai.

ETA: Finally went to see Dune 2 this afternoon and feeling like the middle of the day on Arrakis kind of pulled me more into the story.

Yes it was probably hotter at some point before thermometers were invented, so not actually an all time high, for those goaltending keeping score.

Don't really give a **** if the dinosaurs were dealing with 110 degree mays on the reg.

All I know is we spent everyday this Holliday weekend at a pool and it was enjoyable. When we got home today my son just wanted to play baseball outside. I was sweating through my shirt in less than 15 minutes.

That's the funniest video I have seen in a LONG time.

My kids ask to swim before breakfast and would stay in until after dinner though so its been incredibly worth it.

Space City says the heat index yesterday was 115 at Hobby, which is highest since August '98. Can that be right that the heat index didn't get that high all of last summer? I realize there was a drought and it was relatively dry....but damn if that's true.
