Appreciate the offer. It is not bad enough here yet to warrant moving out. Our neighbor was kind enough to lend us an extension cord from his place to run the fridge and a fan.
Well if you end up just wanting a place to sit in some AC and watch TV, charge phones, use WiFi, etc. for a bit you can still come by.

Anyone know of an electrician that may be able to get out to install a 30A back feed plug w/ interlock?

You want to get a 50A installed, not a 30A. Gives you more flexibility to upgrade generators in the future.

Man, this no power outage deal is getting old fast. Longwood, out in cypress is still completely dark. We got the same center point map, but you can't tell where anything is without some cross streets and roads on it. Praying we get power back today. Glad I installed an interlock last year.

Yeah, between all the outages the last few years and the coming rolling blackouts thanks to dumbass green energy policies, I broke down and contacted Generator Supercenter yesterday.

They actually contacted me fairly quickly, but can't get out to quote until May 31st.

Don't care. I'm getting on the list, and putting a deposit down. I don't care if the financing takes me five years either. I'm not doing this again.

I convinced my mom and step dad. It's time they get a whole home generator. They've been through too many long outages. At their age, they need to have it. I had to take my mom's refrigerated medicine out to the in laws so it wouldn't got bad.

If you already have the generator and a cord with a 30 amp plug that fits the generator and are just looking for a quick solution, you could technically use something like a dryer outlet as your back feed plug if you know what you are doing. You just cut the female end off your generator cord and replace it in with the dryer cord and make yourself what's called a suicide extension cord (the name should tell you that this is not a plan to be taken lightly).

I will caveat this with the statement that this should not be undertake. If you don't know what you are doing because there are a lot of inherent dangers that aren't obvious if you don't truly understand electrical systems. Also if you decide to go this route you must be absolutely sure to turn off the main breaker before hooking up the generator l, otherwise you are also backfeeding the power lines and could get a lineman killed.

Final warning of this can be dangerous, and also if you live in the city limits, is likely not legal, but will get power into your house, so do with it what you will but at your own risk.

Dumb question but when centerpoint reports outages, is it some sort of estimate or can they ping customers and determine if they are out or not?

They're doing well all things considered and updating every 15 minutes. I assume it's a newer technology than the lineman calling in a finished repair?

I was ready to as well. But my truck powered the house (minus ac) and was a really easy process. Easier than past experiences of pulling out the generators, trips to refill gas, etc. Would be nice to have the AC and auto switch over but figure a couple portable ac units and saving $15k will be worth it.

I believe if a home has a smart meter they can tell exactly what houses have power and which ones don't.

I assume everyone has a smart meter these days as it saves the cost of physical meter readers and provides a boat load of usage data.

FYI for the 77008 crowd. I am right of Shepherd by the HEB. Got word from Centerpoint that we are scheduled to be restored Tuesday or Wednesday as it stands today. Guess I was not in the purple/green after all.

It makes you feel really warm and fuzzy until you realize you still need a generator to function.

Yeah i am probably getting a generac after this. Tired of hearing my neighbors next door and behind me running theirs and my house is basically unlivable.. but first gotta fix my house and still havent heard back from insurance since calling un to file a claim.

Currently running 2 ton and 3 ton Trane systems on a 8500/11500 portable generator that has a 50amp outlet. I am alternating them to avoid straining the system. Costs $1000. You don't have to do the whole home route if you don't want to.

If you are not in a rush to grab one, wait until Memorial Day, Labor Day or Black Friday for deals on this one for around $1k:
https://generatorbible.com/generators/westinghouse/wgen11500tfc/

You will need a 50amp receptacle and interlock installed to get the most out of the system. The most you are going to be able to deliver on any of these systems is 240v X 50amp= 12,000w
