It just shows the amount of transplants here now, many people arent used to this weather, I guess. I mean it doesnt happen often, but long time Houstonians are a hardened gulf coast bunch, that have been through a few. My ring app is blowing up with "why dont we have power yet." Im like have you looked outside??!
I wonder how much the population has grown since Ike.

At least in my neighborhood most of damage done by trees way too close to houses and power lines. Why people plant trees within 40' of their house baffles me. Especially under power lines. If the tree is 5' when planted but 20' in a few years, it will be nothing but a maintenance nightmare.

Luckily power restored about 24 hours after we lost it.

Very true. I remember being without power for days after storms as a kid in Crosby. After Ike, my house had no power for 3 weeks.

Nowadays, generator pops on and I laugh at the neighbors.

The NG distribution is NOT built to handle a significant number of gas gensets on the system. There was substantial pressure loss yesterday during this event.

Any data on that?

The next time we have a winter storm outage scenario I'll be surprised if the system doesn't fail with the combination of all the new gensets and people burning gas for heat.

Weird deal, but only lost power for an hour last night near Detering and Dickson in 77007.

It's a very different world though.

When Ike hit, we didn't have iPads or what became a total reliance on internet. People didn't rely on it. Nowadays (myself included) we expect full internet all the time and to not have it is unnerving in a sense.

Couple of things… the only way to harden the distribution system against what happened yesterday is to bury everything. This wasn't wire and pole getting blow down, it's trees everywhere. The cost would be astronomical and I promise everyone saying we need to "do something" would pass when they saw the bill.

The pressure issue on generators isn't a huge concern right now. I'd be a little concerned in another big winter storm, but I think there have been other improvements to fix that as well.

And for reference, Ike was 16 years ago….

We've been through enough of these that this power outage is more of a nuisance than a crisis for us. We stay prepared. I'm also very glad my bougie cheese survived in the Yeti. I've got some really good cheeses that would have been a real shame to have spoil.

It has been a little over 24 hours for most without power.

And people are freaking out.

Power up your music and get a speaker that can hold a charge. Spend time with friend and family

And people wonder why we in Texas have wayyy too many coolers. This is why.

Looking forward to having power again in August

Ike was '08, not '88.

I was already dependent on my laptop and blackberry by then. The night the storm was coming, I charged everything up and secured the spankbank knowing the power would go out. Fell asleep in the hallway watching a movie in the dark before my Dell died.

How unprecedented is this storm?

As a general question.

We've seen all kinds of storms but looking at the photos and people's accounts of the storm, this seems like something different.

The last big US derecho was, I think, in Iowa in 2020? It's was it 22? This one however stretched all the way to Florida.

A derecho isn't unheard of, but they're NOT common

I was wondering if Downtown had that kind of wind damage in Ike; I never made it down there that week and of course had limited opportunities for seeing pictures in the immediate aftermath.

I know Hurricane Alicia took glass off some buildings Downton; not that I was old enough to remember the storm, but for some reason I remember that a kindergarten classmate's dad had been badly injured by falling glass.

There was some glass on the streets downtown during Ike, but looking at the photos of this storm it seems like the downtown buildings took more glass damage.

One thing i always complain about in kingwood with Centerpoint the lack of maintenance.

They finally cut trees this year which stopped done of the power outages up here. Literally would get a normal gentle rainstorm and we'd lose power for hours because something would touch the lines.

Hell, we lost power 5 weeks ago for 13+ hours because a transformer popped on a sunny day and they took forever to fix it.

A lot of issues would be solved if they did a better job of maintenance. But that means that have to spend money. And maybe not buy back shares. Or other silly financial stuff.

Yes - there are power poles that split/got knocked over. Going to guess taking those offline to repair will take some people off of power.

Still no power in 77008. Yesterday was manageable because it was 75 degrees outside. It's going to be 92 and humid today. Any house without power is going to be an oven by mid day.
