There don't seem to be any updates at all, which seems abnormal to me. They've been pretty decent with updates every time I can remember with outages but it's just silence and the outage site doesn't have info-it clearly works but there's no data populated. Purely speculation but it leads me to believe there is a relatively large problem that they dont want to discuss or the government doesn't want them to discuss for some reason (more Texas grid embarrassment?). I think most of us would simply plan accordingly if they came out and said "it's going to be a week or two". But that's probably giving too much credit to the masses, who would cause mass chaos.

The NG distribution is NOT built to handle a significant number of gas gensets on the system. There was substantial pressure loss yesterday during this event.

Perfect. Tens of thousands of people spend millions on backup power systems only for the backup energy source to not be sufficient for those people when they need it.

How much of an issue did this cause yesterday? Was already planning on a generator this summer and had natural gas in mind. Is it enough of a concern to go propane instead?

You want total reliability? For how many hours? Both NG and propane have limitations. Duel fuel strategy…

I'll have to think through that. The goal is to have reliable power in the event of a freeze or hurricane. So a week?

My kids' last day of school was supposed to be Wednesday, May 22. They go to school in Cypress and many families have been negatively impacted by the storm. Finals were the only thing going on next week. The school just made finals optional. Guess my kids' last day of school was yesterday. That was a pretty low key last day of school!

Not saying that's all that matters.

This is exactly why happened to us last year (Centerpoint in The Woodlands/Harris Co). It's what made the situation so frustrating. We understood there was a major weather event that caused a widespread outage. After a couple of days, people just wanted to know if they should stay or leave, but we were getting zero information.

My experience is the worse the damage is, the less likely they are to give an estimate.

When CenterPoint moved to their new outage map, they basically set it up so they don't have to tell us anything.

If the map works (and that's a big if), it just says there was a lot of damage and so they can't say anything.

Speculation, but I think Centerpoint's in house (on premisis) network, which would likely be what they set up to detect outages based on meters they can read remotely, was affected by the outages. To your point, their website - and basics of their outage map - loads, which suggests that part of what you see online is hosted off premises (cloud), but needs on premises data to be useful (show current outages). Thus you can go to their outage map but get nothing in terms of data.

The emails / updates you get would be based on some algorithm analyzing Centerpoint's on premisis data and generating an automatic email. If their on premises network can't collect that data, then they can't generate and send that email / text update.

The lack of updates isn't a problem with "the grid". There is enough supply, unlike what happened to "the grid" during the freeze. Centerpoint, which is responsible for connecting power to the end customer, can't connect the supply due to trees, wind, etc. taking out the connection to the customers. This issue is compounded by not being able to have their on premisis data shared off premisis.

In that June storm you're talking about that hit Spring/The Woodlands so bad....we had a tree in our backyard fall on the power lines and break several power poles. I couldn't call out on my cell phone, but I could text. My husband was in Oklahoma, so I texted him and told him. He tried calling Centerpoint to report the power lines down in our backyard and he was on hold for about 2 hours before he finally gave up.

With no cell service, the online maps were useless. And nobody could get through via phone. Would be nice if they implemented some sort of text system to report issues.

Interesting. I'd always heard "sounds like a freight train", but never really sure what anyone meant. I used to work in a train yard so I was never sure specifically what sound they were talking about. So I guess just the general engine noise?

All my neighbors on our block reported the same weird, high-pitched humming sound a few months ago during a really bad storm. Winds coming from all directions, lots of damage, along a straight path on our block. It was the weirdest sound. Very eerie. It just filled the air from every direction, even inside the house. We all wondered whether it was a small tornado that passed right over us.

Propane is expensive and a generator will suck a 500 gallon tank dry inside a week.

Here's the thing. Trees and wind aren't new. We are on the Gulf Coast. Hurricanes are expected. We get major cold fronts with big winds every year.

If we are going to play the game the climate change is leading to bigger storms, then hardening the grid against wind and junk hitting the lines is table stakes. That our grid took this much damage over cat 2 winds is very concerning.

77008 here with no power. This is 12th and Arlington which is not too far from my house. No one has touched this mess yet. Pictures taken a few minutes ago. Going to be a while before we get power I'd bet.

It just shows the amount of transplants here now, many people arent used to this weather, I guess. I mean it doesnt happen often, but long time Houstonians are a hardened gulf coast bunch, that have been through a few. My ring app is blowing up with "why dont we have power yet." I got a hotel in the galleria area because power hasn't been up in the 77007 area around Waugh and Washington. I drove by my place around 4:00PM, and there were lights on a couple blocks west and a couple blocks east... but no my neighborhood.

Anyone around this area with power, yet?
