agreed....they gave some sob story about paying their staff a "living wage" and the service fee helped that.

I've been to restaurants in San Francisco that do something similar, but don't allow tipping.

Somehow, this place wants to do both. The hipster waiter with the wax mustache lecturing me about the economics of the service industry soured what was a great meal up to that point.

Big thumbs up for Tacos Dona Lena off Hammerly. I love their quesabirrias and salsa selections. Nice to see them get a shout.

let's just say the guy liked to hear himself talk.

this was after they refused to split our check. We were two couples, so we just wanted to split down the middle. He gave us some song and dance about being a "family run business", so they couldn't do those kind of things. He was using one of those handheld terminals that require like 3 clicks to split a check, but he couldn't be bothered.

So you don't get a whole ton of service for that service charge

An uppity hipster working at a Thai place? Or are yall talking about a diff restaurant?

we did not.

I must admit, I don't handle these kinds of situations well.

edit...I guess it depends on what you mean by "accordingly". My vote was to tip nothing.

yeah, I was surprised as well.

you could tell it was going to be "special" when the dude came out and started spouting out "chef has prepared some bla bla bla", and "chef recommends this be paired with bla bla bla".

You're a GD Thai restaurant...attached to a gas station...in the ghetto. Don't take yourselves so seriously.

I mean did you give him a poor tip, continuing his view on economics of waiting tables, and cementing his views, which will lead to more diatribes to his guests and more bad tips. An endless cycle of his own creation.

ETA my vote would have been same as yours but It would take a lot for my wife to agree with me though. I also hate being waited on by dudes, it just weird me out, and I waited tables for years.

right...that's the way I took it the second time around.

the place only seats like eight tables, so I guess they're doing their best to fleece as much as possible.

I don't know how well that will work when they get to the larger location.

Any time I see a BS service charge like that, I deduct it from their tip and note the receipt accordingly so they know that they're losing out b/c of their BS charges.

Now I kind of want to go.

For anyone on the Westside, since we're on the subject of Thai food, my buddy took me to Aroy Thai Cafe (Where "Just GRK" used to be, between Kirkwood and Wilcrest) and I was very impressed. I can only speak for the Pad Kee Mao, but it was probably the best I have ever had...even better than old school Thai Gourmet. Place was pretty dead on fri during lunch, but I am hoping they do well in the 079 with take-out. Don't want them going out of business. /end of derail

I went back to Thai Gourmet a few weeks ago (I think it's called Thai Palace now). Same setup, menu, etc.

Food was pretty much the same, but the place was empty. Back in the day, you would be on a wait during Friday lunch. There were maybe 5 tables occupied. I don't think people know it opened back up.

Haha thought this was just me. Although it doesn't seem to bother me at Mexican restaurants for some reason. One time our waiter at Juanita's in Oak Forest handed me my silverware like he we were in the pen and he was slipping me a shank. He even looked away, like guards might be watching. Wife thought it was hilarious and he was doing a bit, but I don't think he was.

Yep, that, combined with work from home and flex schedules have really hit them hard imo. Even when it was still Thai Gourmet, it was never the same after Covid. It would be half-full on the best days and the service wasn't the same.

Place used to always be slammed for lunch and dinner. I still want to try it soon.

I have never and will never understand "we can't split the check" nonsense. I dont believe any software doesn't allow for this.

Rio Verdence > Pueblas
Puebla is on North Main and is listed as kind of a neighborhood Tex-Mex joint. Rio Verdence is on the near North side by northside high school. Everything is homemade from scratch, including salsa, tortillas, all kinds of fresh fruit and vegetable juices. Puebla it's OK, but not quite as good for a neighborhood joint.

Pondicheri made the top 20? I mean the food's decent, but if you aren't ordering wine or cocktails the waitstaff will completely ignore you.

Gatlin's is some of the worst BBQ I've ever had in my life.

Also, the fact that Hugo's didn't make the list at all is f'ing ridiculous.

Tio Trompo taco on Shepherd made the Chron list. I just tried it. The trompo taco was indeed good, with a nice crunch on the pork. A traditional cut of pineapple would've helped. Generous cilantro and onions, with what looked to be homemade salsa. However none of the tortillas are homemade and I got the corn which were brittle and broke while eating my tacos. The rice/beans were excellent; the beans had that silky texture like they put lard in there.

I'd have voted trompo tacos from the truck on Fulton right by Moody Park. Those are better. Plus their charro beans definitely rock - with floating pork fat in the broth.

Tacos in general - Laredo on Washington might have deserved a place. The wait-in-line experience and rush through the counter line hustle. The fajita tacos are worth the wait. But I recommend Laredo's other location on Irvington. It's in a house with no sign out front. Just look for the work trucks outside and walk in the door.
