I disagree. Every time I've been there the food has been excellent. Imo best Italian in the city.

I'm surprised Grafiti Raw didn't make the list.

ETA: I also don't get the love for Kata Robata. The food is good, but the overall experience isn't great.

Kata Robata is stingy AF. Value for price is terrible.

I'm surprised Roka Akor didn't make the list at all. Their Omakase is a pretty good value for $108 and you get a stupid amount of really good food. Even if you don't get Omakase their normal menu is solid.

The BBQ that is included is enough evidence for me to not pay attention.

I can enjoy all types of BBQ (fast food, bottom of the barrel etc). I don't mind Gaitlins or Feges, but come on. No where near the top of BBQ in Houston let alone top 100 food joints in Houston. Have had Feges 5 times now. Twice it came out somewhat cold (at peak hours). Gaitlines is just fine, but zero atmopshere for a BBQ joint. Not sure if they take that into account or not for that list.

In summary: This list is a no for me dawg. Plus the chronicle trying to get ppl to pay still is hilarious. We don't have a real newspaper in this town anymore....

edit to add: This list also makes me sad that I am old. Don't know or even heard of a large number of these places. I am behind the times it seems...

It's not your age causing you to not hear of these places, it's your attitude. Your own post illustrates this. You're ignoring the list because you don't agree with 2% of it and then lamenting that you haven't heard of a large number of them.

It was quite good back in the days of a shed on 19th before the barbecue craze and moving to a brick and mortar.

I'm not sure how they're tied into things, but they get an exorbitant amount of love and publicity for the quality of their products and service. F&F is no different. Hell, they have a "chef" on the food network all the time.

I don't get it and I'm a sucker for backing local GOOF joints.

No kidding. I don't see this new fad of "eating in restaurants" lasting much longer.

Especially given the culinary feats coming out of my backyard.

I'm a pretty damn good cook but there's not a chance in hell I can replicate stuff coming out of the top restaurant kitchens.

Agreed. I grew up in the industry and can more than hold my own against good restaurants. The blackened cod and shrimp florentine I did Saturday had rave reviews.

But the top places have the success they do in one of the hardest industries to stay open for a reason.

Plus, it means everyone doesn't have to eat the same thing.
If one person doesn't like tomatoes, seafood, mushrooms, pasta, olives... that takes like.. a million foods out of the dinner rotation.

100%. You aren't shopping, prepping, cooking, taking special orders, etc.

Just having a drink and dropping a couple hundred bucks.

I'm just not in a stage of life anymore with young kids, tuition, and a mortgage to be able to do that all the time right now. But I'll always be a foodie and enjoy going out to a nice place with the Mrs. here and there.

All kidding aside.

Something people often overlook is the setting and the service are just as important a factor in a high ranking as the food. Everyone has great nights, everyone has off nights. The great restaurants are just a lot more consistent and if they have an issue it's generally only in 1 of the 3 categories.

A great meal is as much about the experience as it is the food.

No doubt, Uchi is still one of the top sushi places in Houston. Their continual push of Soto is perplexing, as we eat a LOT of sushi and that place is incredibly overrated and overpriced IMO. Tried it a second time recently thinking maybe the first experience was a fluke, but nope. Presentation is more important than food there.

As far as MF is concerned, do yourselves a favor and get an omakase reservation there (not just at your table but the organized one). It is superb!

Same. The Mrs. and I love a great dining experience but being so constantly busy with the kiddos makes it difficult to get to these places as frequently as we used to.

100% agree, which is why lists like what the Chronicle does are really no-win. You can't compare some counter order spot to a full service restaurant that has wine program and a bar program. The effort in managing these types of places are so different it is almost impossible to compare.

But, still kinda fun to see such a list.

Sure. I'd also offer the counter. A small place with only a handful of tables, no buying power, limited revenue, and a small kitchen doing things to be compared to a big production is just as impressive. At least from the industry side of things.

It's a lot easier (not necessarily easy) of a go if you are bankrolled and build out exactly what you want.
