Just out of curiosity, how do the kids get mutton bustin spots that far ahead of time? I always just sort of assumed the kids who participated in the show were picked from the daytime mutton bustin that any kid can participate in.

With the rodeo, it's all who you know and the connections they provide. Especially with mutton bustin

For the kids that do the mutton Bustin in the arena, there is an application process, I think it's during the summer, and if you get picked, you are assigned a specific night.

Heard the guy responsible for overseeing the bookings had just retired but still oversaw this round of bookings.
maybe he was being pushed out so he decided to give the big middle finger to everyone on his way out

It's great to see people get a reality check.

Oh you think you can do better, have at it.

Turns out stuff It's a lot harder than it looks and people tend not to appreciate that fact.

Oliver Anthony on the main stage is bananas. Lol.
Could this be a record low attendance for a performer? What is that anyway?

I like his 2 songs that went viral but I would never go see him at a huge setting like the Rodeo.

I'm guessing there are a lot of country folk within an hour drive of Houston that would want to see him vs. Luke Bryan, etc.

Over/under 60K for Oliver Anthony?
AustinCountyAg

Wayyyyy under. They will claim a huge number just because of season tickets but the actual number of people in the stadium that actually stay to watch the show will be tiny imo

Actual attendance or tickets sold? They already get to count the season tickets.

Attendance will be below 60K.

tickets sold. I don't think HLSR gives 2 ****s about actual attendance.

The record low might have been Ashley McBryde last year. Can't remember what the actual scanned number was but it was maybe 20k. I couldn't give my tickets away for that one.

There was another night either last year or year before, can't remember who the performer was, and the weather forecast was similar to what we have now. It ended up just being really cold, but hardly anyone came.

For Oliver Anthony, I think there is no inbetween, it will either be empty or slammed.

I bet if the rodeo gets a percent of concessions they might care more than you think?

Everybody announces the tickets sold, not the actual attendance, it's not an HLSR thing. They even say "paid rodeo attendance" compared to Kyle Field where they say we have a sold out crowd and there are empty spots all over.

Hardy

And they brought back Hank Jr.

Chairman's Club. They've jacked the prices up across the board. Those seats were like $125 last year. It's fun, but I wouldn't recommend if you actually want to see the show because you are so high up.

Honestly that doesn't sound like that bad a deal if you just wanna go for a good time (which is all I'm there for since NRG is crap for concerts).

I'm pretty sure I'd eat and drink $179 worth of stuff. That's not hard

We had the lower level suites a few years ago which was food & drinks included. The food was very good (BBQ brisket, sausage, etc.) and a good variety of beers & liquors. Plus the line for food & drinks is the shared suit is almost none. Much different than the non suite level seats I've had in the past. You'd spend 15 minute minimum for any given food/drink line.

Folks running the rodeo are a lot different than they were 10+ years ago, lots of retirements and change in leadership visions.

Booking concerts for HLSR is an art form - lots of budgets, logistics, and egos that go into it. Leroy Schaffer did it for years and knew so many of the touring acts' agents so sometimes he'd get a sweetheart deal or the performers would take a smaller cut since it "was for the kids". It was easier when one agent repped several of the artists - an agent might have 6 or 7 of their performers all play the rodeo in a year. Easy for the agent, the performers, and the show.

They've had years when a lot of judges from The Voice or American Idol all played the show - easy one-off gig when they weren't touring and same management companies.
Money is highly confidential - you can imagine a band getting 250K to play only to find out the next night's act is getting 400k.
This year the show took a hit because so many regular acts and wishlist acts were already playing highly lucrative festivals. Those artists don't want to play the same city twice.
Timing is also everything - rodeo has totally lucked out when some artists agreed to play rodeo and were at the very top of their game - Aldean, Luke Bryan, Clay Walker, Garth. Really no one creating a huge buzz like Cody Johnson or Parker McCollum last year. Rodeo must have signed the Oliver Anthony deal right when that song was hot - hoping there'd be some momentum there but a lot of legacy acts would've been much better choices.

I wouldn't say no one is crating a buzz, plus did people really get excited for Parker McCollum? Never understood his appeal.

Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson are as hot as it gets in country right now, and Hardy is right behind them. I don't care much for them, but tons of people do.

Otherwise great post. Most people don't know what all goes into it. They say, "they should have got this person" when they probably tried and they were busy, couldn't make any of the dates work, and some tell the rodeo to F off.

People are going to complain no matter what. People say they are tired of the same acts every year and they completely change it up and then people complain that it's all new acts instead of the same ones that usually come.
