La Lucha. Menu modeled after the old San Jacinto Inn. Old Ags May remember that place. Fantastic oysters and fried chicken. Casual place, but make a reservation. Gigem!

Make a reservation?!? The last few times I've been there there was hardly anyone there, including one Thursday night in the spring with perfect weather where every other place we tried was overflowing.

N Shepherd in that area is such a beatdown. I imagine a lot of their customers are avoiding the area for the same reason.

Haven't been back since they kicked us out for lighting cigars on the outside patio while people around us were smoking cigarettes.

I'd rather smell a cigar than a cigarette.

That's the typical sentiment. So we just laughed and said give us our check (we were still drinking outside) and left. There were no signs posted saying no cigars or anything like that.

Cigars are so much more potent. I would never complain, but I hardly notice a few people smoking cigs outdoors at a table near me. The other night we were watching fireworks and a dude was like 20 ft away from us and the wind from the south was blowing the smoke straight towards us to the point it was constant and obnoxious. If several dudes are smoking cigars at a table in a small outdoor patio area, it's almost impossible to escape, and way more pungent/potent than cigs imo. And I like the smell of them when i'm smoking them or smelling them from a distance.

Just saying... can see why they would bother customers of some places more than cigs.

I get a group of cigars being an issue. When I light up on bar patios and am the only one smoking one, I get complemented quite often on how good it smells and how they wish cigs smelled that good.

If no one is smoking, I'll usually ask the people at tables closest to me if they mind if I light up and they usually all say "oh a cigar, yes please".

I'm the other way around. Cigars are just terrible IMO, heavy pungent smoke that doesn't go away for a long time and sticks to you if you are around it.

Cigs aren't great, but tolerable to me.

Give me a good tobacco pipe over all of them.

Then don't have smoking at all. Or if you're not going to have cigar smoking, post a sign so I don't light a $15 stick thinking all is well.

To be fair, I don't think any of these posts are necessarily directed to you. I'd wager most agree with you, that if a restaurant patio allows cigarettes, they should allow cigars. If not, it should be posted.

It's just turned into a conversation of cigar smokers vs. cigarette smokers.

I love smoking cigars, but hate the after taste that lingers forever. Also not a huge fan of the smoke if I'm not smoking, and I agree its heavier than cigarette, which I hate also. I also feel like cigar smokers are generally more entitled and *****ish, not saying you are/were.

But Ecig smokers are the worse of them all as far as entitlement. They think they can smoke those damn things anywhere just because it's electric....

Again, I don't mind if they tell us no smoking cigars. So be it. It was that it was after the matter that they told us to put them out or leave while others were smoking cigarettes around us. Don't have a sign that says smoking area and then tell people no smoking certain stuff. Have a sign that says "Smoking Area - No Cigars"

My mom was a cigarette smoker and dad smoked cigars and a pipe. I always found the cigarette smoke made ME smell worse than dad's cigars.

But maybe my opinion is just clouded by the emotional attachment I have to my dad's memory. I found one of his old cigar butts in a tool chest I got after he died. I still have it.

Cigs have cheap, low quality tobacco infused with chemicals that stink. So yes, they smell much worse.

Yeah I find cigar smoke to be way more strong/offensive than cigarette smoke. And cigar smokers are generally more obnoxious about it imo. Obviously not talking about you specifically.

They sell cigar and tobacco scented candles that are popular. They don't sell cigarette scented candles.

What Tex Mex?

Oysters, Shrimp, Fried Chicken, Burgers, Deviled Eggs, Dumplings...that's pretty much the entire menu.

Or are you thinking that Superica and La Lucha are the same place

If they're allowing cigarette smoking and it says "Smoking Area" don't see why it wouldn't be. Not like we lit cigars inside or in front of a sign that said "No Smoking".

That's the entire point of having a smoking area on a patio.

Just doing a little housekeeping as we seem to have veered off track from the OP's post.

It appears we ARE NOT going to put La Lucha on our list and the jury is still out on cigar smokers being big jerkfaces for lighting up on a restaurant patio that allows smoking?

I'll admit I haven't thought about La Lucha in some time. I've enjoyed my meals there but it's best with a larger group where things can be shared.

I can't imagine the construction has helped at all as I don't dare venture near that area right now. I've found riding the main lanes of 11th between Shepherd and Studemont on my bicycle with my mass of bicycle friends offers everything I need in the Heights.

Agreed. Also, I think society needs a healthy dose of "tough sh**". If you don't like cigar/cig smoke, don't sit outside where people can smoke cigars/cigs.

My only point is that some people find cigar smoke to be much more overbearing than cig smoke. It's definitely much stronger, for obvious reasons. I love the smell, as long as it's not just billowing into my face.

But as the poster above said...pipe smoke >>> all others.

I've been smoking cigars since I was 12. I understand it isn't for everyone and I'm well aware that the smoke of cigars creates a much different setting. It's a heavier smoke.

Most people here know, so I don't mind "outing" myself, but I'm one of the owners of Nice Ash. We understand that which is why we created a business for people.

But there were two other people outside smoking cigarettes. No one was eating. We were in their smoking area. If you want to add an asterisks for no cigars. That's fine. We would've respected it. We're not obnoxious cigar people. It's just the way they came at us. Put it out or leave. Fine. We left. We had every intention of sitting on the patio, enjoying our cigars, and ordering more drinks.

I'll have to check this out. I love a good cigar on occasion. I can almost only smoke them with a good bourbon or scotch in the other hand though.

Agreed on the rest re: how they handled it. Classic NIMBY heights BS that we don't have to deal too much with in God's country (Cypress). JK

Just googled, that is a sweet location BTW. I miss living just around the corner (Columbia and White oak) back in my rowdier days.
