The question is will they get worse?
I've known John a long time and I know firsthand he really does care about improving quality of life for his constituents. The difference between him and someone like Turner (or SJL) is that he has never been about taking credit. He has done a ton of stuff behind the scenes for people that no one will ever know about.

I have every confidence he will do everything he can to make good on what he has committed to doing, but we all know it comes down to hiring the right department leadership to effectively execute his plans.
Agreed. I grew up with one of his daughters. We didn't always agree on politics, but I respect the hell out of him. And he was probably smarter than most seeing where Texas politics were going years ago and running as a centric Dem. Not that I'd ever admit that to him.

Can I get a youtube video explaining what this proposition is saying?

SHALL THE CITY CHARTER OF THE CITY OF HOUSTON BE AMENDED: TO REQUIRE THAT MEMBERSHIP BY THE CITY OF HOUSTON IN A COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENT OR METROPOLITAN PLANNING ORGANIZATION SHALL BE CONTINGENT ON THE VOTES OF THE GOVERNING BOARD FOR SUCH COUNCIL OR ORGANIZATION BEING APPORTIONED PROPORTIONATELY ON THE BASIS OF POPULATION, NOTWITHSTANDING STATUTORY VOTING MEMBERS, AND THAT MEMBERS REPRESENTING LOCAL GOVERNMENTS SHALL HAVE AT LEAST 90 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL VOTES; AND TO REQUIRE THE CITY OF HOUSTON TO WITHDRAW ITS MEMBERSHIP FROM ANY NON-COMPLIANT COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENT OR METROPOLITAN PLANNING ORGANIZATION IF THE VOTING SYSTEM IS NOT CORRECTED WITHIN 60 DAYS OF THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF ADOPTION OF THE CHARTER PROVISION?

Update:

Frostwood didn't start letting people in until 7:30 and only one at a time. When I got my ballot, the only thing on it was the propositions. No actual elections. They said they needed to call someone and figure that out, so I just left.

From what I can tell (and what some of the other workers were telling me on the side), it seems like it was very poorly run by they judge at that location.

do you actually live in Houston or one of the Villages?

And FYI - you can vote in any voting center in the county.

BUT I'm sure the election judges are incompetent - I saw them front and center in early voting. Not a chance one of them was anything but a died in the wool leftist.

I always go to the the maxim, "never ascribe to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity." I don't think the people I observed were capable of this. They just didn't know what they were doing.

I always go to the maxim "Never underestimate the capability of somebody that is willing to do whatever it takes to win, regardless of how stupid you think they are"

Vote early and avoid these issues. No excuses for what's going on at some polling places but we ought to expect these failures by now.

The conspiracy theorist in me makes me think that just lets the Dems know how much cheating they need to do on the last day.

The County parties appoint the election judges for each precinct and the election judges hire the poll workers.

And he was instrumental in not allowing UT-Houston from happening

True, but even tiny little bits of stupidity have far-reaching consequences.

Looks like this will go to a runoff, Houston will get what it deserves if they elect SJL.

I didn't expect it to pass, given all the rhetoric about the age of presidential candidates. It has people thinking more about the ages of candidates and a proposition that directly says it will allow even older candidates runs counter to all the "too old to hold office" messaging.

I talked to a political consultant friend yesterday who is doing analysis of runoff voting and she said turnout is skewing heavily Republican, which bodes well for Whitmire.

I believe it. I early voted in runoff and a bunch of my republican friends did too. I legit think anyone that remotely follows politics and has a conservative bent, doesn't want SheJack winning and it is driving turnout. We already see what a disaster Lina is at county level, we dont need it at city level.

The only issue I've heard is from some older conservative friends saying "we don't have anyone to vote for" in the mayor's race. Of course, nobody should need a party label to tell them to vote against Sheila Jackson Lee.

Don't forget the other races if you haven't voted yet. Chris Collins was Rodney Ellis' guy to take over elections administration when they ran off Diane Trautman, and he has Sylvester Turner's endorsement.

The city council races fall pretty clear down partisan lines.

You can see the Democrat party endorsed candidates here, if you're curious: https://www.harrisdemocrats.org/_files/ugd/fbff52_e5f904d386e94789b99fb4f1eddab5d2.pdf

Republican endorsed candidates: https://www.harriscountygop.com/2023novemberendorsedcandidates/

HPOU endorsements: https://bg.hpou.org/hpou-endorsements-for-city-election-on-november-7-2023-2/

Houston Professional Fir Fighters Association doesn't seem to keep their website current, but from their facebook:

Even if I cared nothing about the city races, would be pretty easy to vote against all of Sylvester Turner's and Lina Hidalgo's endorsed candidates, which include SJL and all the Harris County Democrats candidates.
