Damn... my favorite bar. I'm glad I watched the LSU game there. They say they'll rebuild.

A couple years ago, a bunch of buddies and I rented a bus and had a beer or 2 at a bunch of good old bars and called it the "While they're still here" tour. So glad we did it because a bunch of them are gone now thanks to Covid and hipsters. Grifs now gets added to the list of the ones we lost.

Grifs might rebuild but it won't be the same.

Man that's sad - many, many good times there circa mid/late 90s - early 2000s mainly. Especially St. Patrick's days (after kennealeys)

A punch to the gut hearing this. Watched the first Rockets championship game there. So many fond memories. Fire started on the outside - arson?

Have you been recently?

Stopped by in early December to to kill an hour about 500 on a Thursday.

It was depressing as hell. Clientele looked like they had been sitting there and not gotten up since I was last there a decade ago.

With the Chinaman consulate shut down, I figured the CIA was no longer fronting the money to keep Griff's afloat.

If you were in the Corps in the 1960's, you may have used that term, but it is no longer appropriate, despite its rather benign etymology.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

Yeah I went there for old times sake within the last few years and felt the same. Too bad.

. Damn right. That's what makes it special. Occasionally I really enjoy entering mirrors to the past.

I'm getting old and enjoy nostalgia. Sometimes progress ain't always progress…

I'm already old and enjoy nostalgia. That's why I stopped in.

Should have kept the great memories rather than watching Barney from the Simpson hit on the aging bartender (who still had a great rack). Too many good bars in this town to go back and try to relive the glory days. I can pretend to be young and hip at much less depressing places.

lots of great memories at kenneallys and griffs. practically everyone in houston was in one of those two places on st. patrick day in late 90s.

theres a reason they are called memories. the luster and charm of both has long since worn off.

This is how the Shiloh Club used to be back when I lived down the street about a decade ago. Depressing as hell, but cheap drinks and the clientele made me feel better about myself. It was like a bunch of people who had just given up on AA.

Don't know of any other bars you can go to now and know legends of old used to chill there regularly.

Griff's, Kenneally's, and Shiloh Club in one thread? Sounds like a fun night. I need to hit those, West Alabama Ice House, Lola's, Warren's, Cecil's Pub, La Carafe, and Rudyard's before someone burns them down.

Is TBones really much of a dive after they renovated a few years ago?

Even when I was young I wasn't hip and I've always preferred a good dive to the hot spots. There's just something special about a place where you can drink away a random Tuesday afternoon with no judgement. The kind of place where the jukebox had Johnny Cash and The Clash and often played back-to-back.

I miss Thursday night pool tourneys at Cecil's when I lived closer, just before Covid. That is a great bar. Good to be on the bartender's good side. Would not want to cross her.

Happy to report that it is still going strong.

I went to Kenneally's last month on a Tuesday for a nostalgic annual TNDC for a friend's bday. It was dead as hell. Maybe another 10 people besides our group of 10ish. But the Shamrock Pizza was still damn good and the Guinness still tasted great.

And got to see Mario from Kay's Lounge still working there as well

My daughter lives near that site.

It's some kind of hipster spot now and townhomes or something all nearby.

The Jeep Brahs like to all gather there and clog up the road. Lots of female Jeep Brahs as well.
