Alright which one of you went into the ditch heading south on Ashland at 11th...about 6:00 pm yesterday? And/or showed up with the truck and tow strap shortly thereafter? Nice work all around. Second person in that ditch in the last month or so.

It takes some really talent to end up in a ditch.

Yeah I've managed to successfully navigate it multiple times a day for the last 10 or so years. BUT...that northwest corner right at 11th is very steep with little/no shoulder. Even less room now after people keep taking it out.

In adjacent street news, how do y'all like that ridiculously huge speed hump they put in on Heights Blvd?

That one on 7th? I got some air because I hadn't been on Heights for awhile and wasn't really paying attention.

I assume you're talking about the one where the heights hike and bike trial crosses? Tangential, but what's the boards take on crosswalks? I'd say most houston drivers think they don't mean ***** In the many years I've been running I think I've had 3 drivers stop for me waiting to enter a crosswalk.

Quote:

Sec. 552.003. PEDESTRIAN RIGHT-OF-WAY AT CROSSWALK. (a) The operator of a vehicle shall stop and yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing a roadway in a crosswalk if:
(1) no traffic control signal is in place or in operation; and
(2) the pedestrian is:
(A) on the half of the roadway in which the vehicle is traveling; or
(B) approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger.
(b) Notwithstanding Subsection (a), a pedestrian may not suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and proceed into a crosswalk in the path of a vehicle so close that it is impossible for the vehicle operator to stop and yield.
(c) The operator of a vehicle approaching from the rear of a vehicle that is stopped at a crosswalk to permit a pedestrian to cross a roadway may not pass the stopped vehicle.
(d) If it is shown on the trial of an offense under Subsection

Most seem to think the bolded means cars have the right of way and a pedestrian can't enter if they see a car. I interpret it as pedestrians have the right of way and if I see someone waiting to enter a crosswalk and I can, I should yield. They don't, however, have the right to just walk out regardless of where cars are approaching

For it. Lots of pedestrians crossing there so good to slow down vehicle traffic and hopefully will encourage drivers to yield to pedestrians as mentioned above.

That's exactly what they should be doing there and at Nicholson/11th.

That's a heavily used hike/bike trail at all times of day. (unlike the bike lanes on 11th, but that's already been hashed out)

And stick a bollard right in the middle of that crosswalk so cars will stop using it to turn/crossover.

I used to run 3 times and cross at 11th/Nicholson. I'd say 1/8th of the time someone would stop at the cross walk. What I always got nervous about was someone else whipping out behind them and clipping me when I was in the middle.

I haven't talked to a single resident that didn't want something done at 11th and Nicholson.

I used to be one that wouldn't actually yield if I saw a car behind me for fear that car would whip around me and hit the pedestrian. I felt it was safer for the pedestrian to stay where they were despite what the law says. I believe no matter what the legal law says the law of physics is more important to avoid.

I believe we all celebrate what they did at 11th and Nicholson. We just don't believe curbed bike lanes were necessary to go along with it.

I agree with this 100%. The plethora of signage at Nicholson has improved cars stopping, but it's still not 100% yet. The one corner of that intersection that does not have a street light is one end of the crosswalk, which is a problem. Cars won't see me at night unless i step into the street in front of them.

Coincidentally, I was just driving north on waverly and when I came to the hike and bike trail a family was crossing. The car going south and I stopped so they could cross.

I guess the second car coming south didn't give two ****s, thought we were parked, or just wasn't paying attention cause he wasn't slowing down and moved over to the left to pass the car waiting for the crosswalk. He also didn't see the <10 year old on a bike in the crosswalk. Both of us honked and he finally stopped.

Hard disagree. When you block people from making a turn (for example, heading south on Nicholson and trying to turn east), you are actively encouraging people to go one block west and uturn. I just don't think that is solving any issues here; frankly, I think you could make an argument that it is more dangerous.

I'm not encouraging people to hold up traffic and/or cut through during busy times with heavy traffic (both car related and people related traffic); however, don't hurt the people living on Nicholson who just want to be able to turn both directions onto 11th at 6 am on a Monday morning (when there are few people or cars on the road).

And yes, I am one of the jackasses cutting through but I never do it if there is a car behind me or I can see even one human being on the hike and bike.

I've seen pedestrians unable to cross 11th on the hike & bike because a car was stopped in the crosswalk and there was too much traffic on 11th to be able to complete the illegal turn.

There was a biker this morning going down 11th just completely ignoring the bike lane.

He then ran the red light at Yale.

if people are routinely blocking the bike lane with their trash cans, then it might actually be safer not to use the bike line so that you don't get stuck trying to jump a curb.

Chalk up another victory to the Alllston median. Just came home and there's a car perfectly straddling it.

I see this behavior all the time from bikers. Especially the ones that are serious bikers. Running the stop signs is very common. I'll wait for them but I think to myself, I have the right of way and if I hit you, regardless of who broke the law, you're going to be broken for life.

Saw a biker a bit further west yesterday and he was riding on the sidewalk.

After riding the bike lanes a few times I usually opt for a parallel neighborhood street (often 7th, 12th or 15th) when riding with my family because they still seem safer than 11th. The Nicholson intersection is definitely way safer now though.

It was awesome tonight when a car broke down in the eastbound lane between Yale and Heights. Nowhere to go and not enough room for cars to get around it. Caused a big backup of angry drivers on 11th.

Quote:

Houston's bike lanes are apparently so dirty that they literally broke a brand-new sweeper meant to clean them.

Catch up quick: The city in August purchased its first special narrow sweeper, a Madvac LS175, designed to fit inside the city's bike lanes, sidewalks and pedestrian islands, which standard street sweepers are too wide to clean.

  • Houston residents named it the Space City Sweeper after Houston Public Works held a naming contest.

Driving the news: The Space City Sweeper got through just nine service orders before it met its match in April, according to public works spokesperson Erin Jones.

  • The sweeper encountered heavy debris and "malfunctioned," forcing the city to return it to the manufacturer for repairs.
  • It has since been repaired and is back in service, Jones said.

Yeah that donut place is good. Breakfast sandwiches are good. No frills and people aren't as crazy a the Shipleys with the drive through out in the street.

Just think about how many gallons of P66 and Exxon gasoline was burned up in idling and gridlock traffic. The Refineries thank you Houston!

Had another car nail the bike lane curbs and park in my driveway to fix it tonight. Looks like she bent her axle in addition to blowing the tire.

Anyone heard that emergency vehicles won't go down 11th due no being able to maneuver over the bike lane curbs? I know it was a concern during the opposition phase but apparently when that house caught fire on 10 1/2 last weekend some of if not all of the fire trucks went down 13th presumably avoiding 11th.

That was told to us by a neighbor that lives near 13th and Rutland.

Curious if it's standard practice now.
