I never cared for the donut place but I think this is a publicity stunt more than anything else. The kolache shop took a lot of their morning business and they've been suffering since. As another poster said, they are jumping on the wagon to try to rouse sympathy.

However, if loro or the Italian place start complaining about business being heavily reduced, then I think I'll start believing the bike lane is having a negative effect on business. I know both places had been complaining previously because they were concerned their trucks wouldn't be able to get into their lots for delivery but I haven't heard anything since the bike lane went in. Living near the area, I haven't seen the parking lots or businesses less full than usual.

Don't get me wrong; I'm against the bike lane for many of the reasons stated in this thread, including the traffic onto off streets, no turns onto certain side streets, my commute becoming much worse on 11th, etc.; however, there is no doubt in my mind that 11th and Nicholson has become way safer. Accidents/near accidents involving vehicles, bikes and/or pedestrians were a daily occurrence prior to this change. No joke, they were at LEAST a daily occurrence.

I haven't seen/heard one since.

Were there better and cheaper options, like just adding the red light thing that got put into place on Shepherd next to the Kroger? Absolutely.

Is the bike lane a huge headache to traffic flow in the area? Absolutely.

And yet, is the hike and bike trail intersection at 11th and Nicholson now safer than it was before? Absolutely.

The one function that started this whole effort to change 11th street was safety. And it is safer.

Standard government here. They look to "fix" an issue in the worst, most convoluted way, with little science or input from the community and they do it all for 10x the cost. But, if safety was the one and only reason for doing it...

I honestly don't care if the donut place makes it or not as I've never been in there and don't really have plans to go in there but they got fooked worse than anyone else in all of this.

They can't really be compared to Loro or Sofia because East bound traffic can turn into those places and there's room to maneuver and exist.

The donut place has head in parking off of 11th that's a total PITA thanks to the backed up traffic at the light and no access headed from the East.

They could certainly still survive but when your access is cut off in one direction your sales are gonna suffer.

In the brief sample of a few weeks I've not seen the same number of cars I saw prior to all of this idiocy on 11th.

This all could have been done so much better.

For those saying this is a PR stunt, you're wrong. I've known the owner for almost 17 years. She's not the type to make a public spectacle out of her business, even though numerous people have encouraged her to speak out against the project because it is hurting her business. If she says she started losing business when the project went in, I believe her.

As for safety, yes, Nicholson is safer, but in light traffic conditions, especially at night, traffic drives faster because the remaining lane is wider than it was before. When the radar sign was still up, I would frequently see cars driving 50-55 mph at night. There is direct science that COH should be familiar with that shows the wider the lane is, the higher the 85th percentile speed will be.

This becomes particularly problematic when pedestrians use the new crosswalks and just assume traffic knows to stop. I've seen a few close calls already where pedestrians simply stepped out into the crosswalk without waiting to see if the cars were going to stop for them.

I don't know...i'm too scared to drive fast for fear i might drift a few inches off path and total my car on the gigantic concrete barriers.

Removing part of the road access for cars to purposefully slow down & reduce traffic. Not ideal for folks that need roads for commuting.

Did you just quote your own post 7 minutes later and give yourself a pat on the back?

On the donut shop, I can say that I personally have gone there less than before because of the change. I want no part of that parking lot - I watch cars struggle to back out of that lot quite often when heading to work.

I'm west of Bakery Donut and can attest that I'd likely pick Queen Donut rather than deal with the cluster of fitting a u turn in the pedestrian cut through, but that's also because my kids prefer Queen.

I went there during the Freezepacolypse and after telling the lady that I had water when she asked, she then sent me home with a few huge icing buckets to fill up for her.

Yes, I'm taking credit with keeping them going during the freeze.

Drove down 11th this morning just before 8:00 and can report there were no cars in the donut place parking lot.

It so happened that the light was red as I pulled up so I went hard left along that median so another vehicle could get next to me.

One vehicle pulled up and turned right. Another vehicle pulled up and sat next to me. When the light turned green we both progressed across Shepherd into the separately marked lanes.

If only the city would mark two lanes right there so people would know two vehicles can in fact exist next to one another increasing the flow of traffic through that intersection.

It needs a line snaking halfway down the street like Shipley's on Ella .

I've never been to Bakery Donut but maybe will bike over since our go-to place (Hugs and Donuts) shut down last weekend. What's good at BD?

The jalapeno and cheese sausage roll with the strip of bacon on top. Good old fashioned donuts too

There was a sign on the door a couple weeks ago that said they were temporarily closed due to the construction in the area and something about having water issues. Then I saw their Instagram post announcing the shutdown. My kids are crushed. Will give Bakery Donuts a go. Also a big fan of the spicy boudin kolaches at Queen Donuts on W. 18th.

So is now a good time to talk about how Hugs and Donuts is a stupid ****ing name and that Donuts and Kisses would have been a thousand times better?

I like the boudin kolache. I have tried the apple fritter and the blueberry cake. Both good

They also have tacos, breakfast sandwiches and sausage kolaches.

I left the Heights about 18 months ago after 15 years. I loved it, still miss it a bit, and feel for all of you dealing with COH making your lives worse. I promise you the folks at Bakery Donut have never heard of a publicity stunt. They are are as genuine as it gets. I've been back a few times and they still remember me and ask about my kids. I'm in memorial now and there is nothing but Shipleys. I should go ask them if they are interested in moving west. They would crush it out here.

We walked over this morning to pick up some breakfast. Got the sausage / jalapeno / cheese with bacon on top because Irish got it in my head. Next time I'm getting one of those croissant sandwiches.

Just an FYI - BD is definitely more of a traditional place than H&D. You won't see all the crazy donut flavors, but their kolaches / croissant / biscuit selection is obviously much better. Donuts are well made, but they're just the standard flavors.

I'm proud to admit I used the bike lanes this morning.

My dog wanted a whimsical walk this morning so I just let him go where he wanted. We got to Nicholson and 11th and he decided he wanted to head East in the northbound side.

The block before the oil change place the sidewalk was under construction so we got in the bike lane. Not gonna lie I felt incredibly safe thanks to that massive concrete barrier.

Thanks City of Houston for keeping me and my dog safe while the sidewalk is under repair!

Wife and I were walking back home after an early dinner at Gypsy Poet (recommended) and we witnessed a car slam into a new curb for the bike lane just east of Studewood and their tire blew. Just another casualty to the bike lane curbs

I'm from Shiner area. Call them rolls, pigs, or klobasneks. Kolaches are a category of their own
