If my trash can had to go on 11th it would go in the exact same spot it did before all of this mess. If that happened to be in the bike lane then so be it.

Apparently the curbs are also preventing fire trucks from being able to turn onto the streets.

I can't wait for this flyer referenced in the Q&A:

Quote:

Is there going to be a guide shared on what to do in the case of being trapped within all the concrete whether it be a flat tire, stalled car, or a planned attack as there is no 'out' in many areas creating a safety risk. Is a flyer being developed to help us understand what action to take (while I knew I would be trapped in my own house due to cut through traffic and other issues not addressed, I was not prepared for the sea of concrete that would also trap me within a lane without viable outs). Thanks

The City is working on a flyer to demonstrate how to use the new street which will include operations and other street functions, like where to place your recycle/trash cans.

Do you have specific areas where you feel the concrete curb should have a gap? This is something we can assess and potentially modify should it be warranted.

"a planned attack"

These people are truly delusional.

Yesterday morning I saw the city's construction crew get into backed up traffic…. So they went the wrong way into oncoming traffic a couple blocks around a concrete barrier.

You can't make this stuff up.

One of the curbs is already marked for removal because it's impeding the ability of residents to exit the alley at Waverly.

So ... if you want to mess with them, get some neon orange marking paint and mark other curbs for removal. jk

I saw that curb this morning and it looks like it would just make it hard to make a right, but there are lots of other similar instances. The house across from 8 Row w/ the construction going on looks like there's a curb similarly making a right turn hard and a solid median so they can't take a left.

Spent 5 minutes walking down (the sidewalk of) 11th this morning after finishing my run.

I saw a truck turning left onto 11th gun it in a really tight window because of the traffic causing a car to slam the breaks and lay on the horn.

I also saw a car clip a curb (the one eastbound right after you go around the pedestrian island at Nicholson). They hit their bumper based on the sound, and they had a pretty immediate flat tire. I'm wondering if the sun had anything to do with them not seeing it.

Just another day in this mess of a situation

Just talked to a dude working on removal of that curb that Ryan referenced. He was kind of sheepishly shaking his head and said "don't blame me - wasn't my doing…". Poor dude.

Walking home from the gym tonight I was run off the sidewalk by a bicyclist. They really should give those people some bike lanes ...

I wanted a boudin kolache last week. Can't turn into Bakery Donuts off Shepherd. What kind of BS is that?

That lady is so damn sweet. Doesn't matter if you're buying 2 dozen donuts or one. She'll just chat with ya and tell ya to have a great day. If they close, I'm gonna be pissed.

Do you even drive in Houston? Just drive over the curb.

I particularly like all of the DIY freeway exits worn in to the grass on the sides of the freeways because who tf has time for traffic. Bros gotta use that 4 wheel drive some time.

That's what people are doing at Allston, but I'm not sure it's on purpose.

That was me being pissed off because I forgot to turn on Rutland to get to my house on Allston and didn't feel like waiting for the stupid light at Yale. ****ing curb!

Sales at Bakery Donut are apparently really down because people can't get there easily anymore. The owner is worried that it could force her to shut down.

Just perused the NextDoor thread on the bike lanes. There are a handful of true believers that foam at the mouth like a rabid dog at anyone not 100% on board and then a huge crowd of local residents and commuters whose reactions are anything between, "your intentions were nice but this is a disaster," to "anyone that supported this is a complete idiot and should be tied to a tree and shot."

So did I see this all correctly? It started as a "road diet" (completely insane, normative claptrap, btw) and morphed into a bike lane project over funding issues?

I feel for heights people that have to deal with this. I live near the segment of waugh where bike lanes were recently installed. There's at least still 2 lanes for car traffic. But in all the time those lanes have existed, I've never seen a bike in them. Also, they always seem to be littered with trash and other debris.
Chewy

Yes. This allegedly started as a road diet/safety concern.

There's no way you can look at the area between Yale and Shepherd and say there wasn't a motive to bring protected bike lanes along with this.

If we lose a damn long term donut/kolache shop over this someone REALLY needs to pay.

Daddy's yardbird sammiches can fend for itself like the kids of that TV preacher who was screwin' that hockey player.

They've been going out of business for over 5yrs. Just took the bike lane for them to live up to their prophecy.

I'm not defending the bike lanes by any means. But I do call bull**** on the donut place closing because of them. Anyone who wants a donut can still get there. This screams of a pr stunt to get support from the community over a common outrage and boost sales. Or they've been going under for awhile now and they just have a convenient external excuse.

I think you're marginalizng how much this thing has ****ed up the ingress/egress of the surrounding areas.

You can no longer turn into the donut place headed East on 11th. You also can't back out into traffic onto 11th for the most part.

I've been using an alternate route to avoid 11th and Shepherd in the morning when I've done it the 3 years I've lived here. I'm sure I'm not the only one that now avoids that area in the mornings.

And how hard is it to turn North onto Shepherd, East on 12th, and get to the Donut shop that way?

I'm not saying the bike lanes aren't a boondoggle. Our daycare is off 8th and I've seen a drastic increase in traffic. I just don't buy the story that this business is already going to close their doors because of them. If someone wants donuts at bakery donut, they will still go to bakery donut.

I remember when Starbucks had a location on either side of w grey at Shephard, presumably because people are too lazy to go out of their way to get something they want.

It's not as simple as just going around the block to get there - they also have to be able to leave. That parking lot is a tight squeeze as it is, but for someone going east on W 11th, in order to leave Bakery Donut and continue east, they have to exit onto Dorothy, turn onto W. 11 westbound, turn onto N. Shepherd, then onto W. 12th, and then take Alexander or another street to get back to W. 11th, and hopefully the cars aren't backed up enough to keep them from getting onto W. 11th. For a lot of people, the added travel time is too much.

And this was absolutely a bike lane project from the very inception. They tried to disguise it as something else to justify it.

Yeah that parking lot was tricky to get into/out of anyway. Sucks for them.
