What's the best place to buy and cook at home?

My whole life eaten it from a hole in the wall outside of Lafayette or north of Kinder.

Due to the rona, not looking to spend any time in the land of raccoon donkeys.

Wife brought some home from Hebert's, a little above meh to me...

A lot of grocery stores carry Frenchy's. Probably won't live up to your fresh nutria expectations, but I like to get the boudin rice dressing and skillet fry.

I believe it was this stuff I used in a pinch to just find filler food for a bunch more guests than expected. Threw it on the Traeger with the brisket and let it sit in there a while, and it was damned delicious.

We use Zummo's when we're not able to get our usual from the Lafayette area. They're pretty respectable when smoked appropriately. I refuse to eat steamed boudin despite my wife loving it (born/bred in Lafayette).

Also DJ's isn't too bad either but my personal preference is Zummo's.

Praseks has boneless chicken stuffed with boudin which I thought was great. They do sell boudin as well but not tried it alone.

We get deer processed by zummos. This year we got some boudin. It is pretty good. Not sure how it compares to their store line. It is not as good as the Best Stop, but it is pretty good.

I'm sure there are many local places that have good/great/better Boudin, but I'll echo DJ's at HEB. I really enjoy it, and most people I feed seem to really enjoy it as well.

That stuff is legit. When I used to work in Lafayette a lot, that's what an old coon ass there told me to buy. I've bought it ever since.

This is what we will be doing the next time I kill a deer. Tried some of their venison boudin at the hunters extravaganza last year and it was absolutely incredible.

This was like our fourth or fifth year using them. Only complaint has been their vacuum sealing is not always great. They did a better job this year than years past. Maybe the old machine died. Their pricing seems to be right in line with everyone else too. One year I hunted the late late doe season in south Texas. I had to pickup the meat in Beaumont because they had closed the spot on Federal. They warned me ahead of time and I was working out that way, so no big deal for me at the time.

Best stop is good if you like spice that's for sure. We tend towards Billy's, especially their seafood/crawfish boudin. Lord have mercy...

Yes I understand that to be the case in the off season as well. We're back and forth to Lafayette once a month (Covid not withstanding) so that won't be an issue for us either.

I'm through there a good bit and you've got Best Stop, Billy's, and Don's. All three are great and I find it amusing that if you ask 100 people from Lafayette it will pretty evenly break down by thirds as to which place is best.

My dad grew up down that way. Whenever I take a trip to stock up for him I make multiple stops to get various items:

Best Stop: Smoked chicken/turkey sausage, cracklin, dried shrimp, andouille, tasso meat, etc
Legnons in New Iberia - Boudain, hoghead cheese
Dons - pork chops

So much good food in the Acadiana area.

Your best bet is to order some on line and have it delivered from Louisiana. I've lived in Houston area for almost 20 years and I grew up in Louisiana and still go back home and there is nothing here that compares. If you are even considering buying something at a grocery store here that spells it Boudain instead of Boudin, dont even bother.

On line order and delivery can get it to you pretty quick and the quality is worth the price difference.

I will throw one more out there you can buy and have shipped - Market basket smokehouse.

This is the epitome of "it's better from X place because that is where it was invented" mentality.

Do you know of any boudin made in Houston as good as south Louisiana that you can suggest we try?

Or are you just wowing us with today's entry on the Contrarian Dork Fact-a-Day Calendar?

Judice's in Port Arthur legit.

Triple J's Smokehouse on Holmes Rd has some of the best smoked boudin I've ever had.

Hebert's. 3 stores locally. As good as anything I've gotten from Louisiana. They also have a lot of other foods they cook in their kitchen that is really damn good. And their crawfish and meat pies rival Victors cafeteria in New Iberia.

I need to try Judice's in Bridge City, is there another one in PA? Pass by it a lot.

I've never had Hebert's. I'll try 'em. I am well stocked on boudin rt now but i'll give them a shot next time i am buying. I'll give anyone a try, I am not going to say just because they are here they are bad. I'd trust them over buying "boudain" in Odessa Tx.

The bar is high for me, talking the best of Louisiana in boudin. Like good Texas BBQ, TexMex, etc it can be good away from the most authentic places. But my experience has just been that the ones you buy around here aren't the best and it is my opinion that i'd just order it and have it delivered from Louisiana instead of accept lower quality. I lived in Ohio for 2 years and they thought Chili's was good mexican food. Location matters. You get farther away and you can't get the same ingredients, the recipe changes, there are substitutions.

I don't think correcting the spelling of boudin over boudain is koblasnik vs kolache level pedantry, but it might seem like it ;-)

Heberts
Holmes
DJ's

All as good as anything I've had at whatever crack shack everybody raves about in south LA.

Simply because you are in a specific location doesn't mean that something is automatically better - it just means you are eating something in a specific location. Just like buffalo wings aren't magically better in Buffalo, NY than they are in Houston, TX or that clam chowder isn't magically better in Boston, MA than it is in wherever else.

I contend you do a true blind taste test with the folks that swear that XYZ brand out of Bumfck, Louisiana is infinitely better than ABC brand in Houston and they would likely not know the difference at all.

I'll try Hebert's - sounds like it is pretty good. I've had Holmes and DJ's and they weren't as good in my opinion. It's probably just personal preference.

I will agree with you in principle on location, but you have to agree the farther away from a food's origin you get the less the chances of it being authentic or tasting as good. If someone told you they had the best, most authentic tasting, Texas BBQ or Tex Mex from a restaurant in Sweden, would you just assume it was totally legit? There's less variability or ways to mess up chicken wings - so I am with you there. But I'd make an argument about clam chowder, or gumbo for that matter.

Houston is better than most when it comes to boudin. I'd trust it here over El Paso, or Cincinnati. I don't think you can get great Boudin in New Orleans or Shreveport for that matter. there may be an exception, but for the best and my taste I want a select few.

Oh and I have had a blind taste test with some people at my plant, Coleman's boudin (Iota La) versus Nick's Grocery (Port Arthur) and Coleman's won hands down. Colemans is probably a good solid 7-8 down my list in Louisiana. A guy I knew from Port Arthur swore up and down Nicks was the best and excellent and as good as anything in Louisiana. So, some of it is personal taste, but I'd put up the best of Louisiana against anything in Houston and feel pretty confident.
