Fun Data Graphed

Where the (above) graphic came from. You can see the various countries and their rates.

And it can be a little more (dis)heartening if you think about the lack of testing done in the US. The rates could be beating China AND Italy!

I feel like the amount of time I spent thinking about that graph's color scheme vs the data on the graph really describes me as a person.

Yep very glad we were conservative with a potential acquisition that would have taken $25million of our cash that we can now use for salaries of existing employees. Could've been bad for many people at my company if that had gone through.

It was a tongue and cheek bit of "USA USA USA" being the best. By having the most A) total cases and B) cases per day.

I am by no means cheering on a pandemic.

First Harris County death. If you don't want to click the link, it was a man 80-90 years old who had been living in a nursing home. He contracted it through community spread.

What bothers me about all this is elderly folks dying have been skewing the numbers since Day 1.

This is the 2nd 90+ year old that has succumbed in recent days.

Why do you say they're skewing numbers? Fatality is a fatality.

I'm bothered by the community spread.

Also, two of the MoCo cases are hospitalized - the LEO who went to the rodeo and a 40s woman.

Harris Co has At least 6 hospitalizations, including a 20-30 year old.

I'm watching the presser with Harris Co Public Health now, and he said there are 5 new cases today, and several of those are community spread. The website hasn't been updated to show all of them yet.

All I'm saying is that when you get that old, pretty much anything can kill you, common cold, flu, pnumonia, falling and breaking a hip.

The old folks home in Washington St. got this thing kicked off to a bad start.

Agreed about the cases of 30, 40 year olds and the cop.

I think the deaths of the older folks are giving us a false sense of "security" (if you can call it that).

The older folks are dying pretty quickly. I posted a stat a few pages back that the average time in ICU before death was 28 days. That number is out of China, so who knows how reliable it is, but I'm expecting a lag in the deaths of younger people. This virus does not bring a quick death unless you are already really sick.

28 days? Holy Crap we better hope that Malaria drug can get it down to 6 days like that Spanish study showed.

This paper estimates 22 days to discharge. But that's from when you get symptoms. Anecdotal reports is hospitalization happens around day 7 of symptoms, so if you have to go, average you're going to be in there for 15 days.

Quote:

We estimate the mean duration from onset-of-symptoms to death to be 17.8 days (95% credible interval, crI 16.9-19.2 days) and from onset-of-symptoms to hospital discharge to be 22.6 days (95% crI 21.1-24.4 days)

This isn't the exact same link that I referenced previously, but it basically says the same thing.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2020-02-23/coronavirus-patients-long-ventilator-stays-strain-hospitals

This is what I posted the other day. 28 days wasn't average time in ICU, but the point about death/recovery taking weeks still stands.

Among critically ill COVID-19 patients in China, the reported case fatality proportion was 49%. In a report from one hospital, 61.5% of critically ill patients with COVID-19 had died by day 28 of ICU admission. [9,15]

I have loved ones in the travel business. They own a chunk of a larger company that has many agencies. This company is their retirement.

Things are dire. The slowdown is just a few weeks old but they've already closed all store fronts, cut all salaries by 30% and laid off 1/3 of employees. So far.

It pisses me off. It means that this company had zero cash reserves that they can't even make it a few weeks without teetering on bankruptcy. I think a LOT of businesses are in the same boat. I'm super fortunate to work for a company that is extremely conservative and can weather a storm for many months. I literally thank God every day for that.

So what? I have been one of those who scoffs at Dave Ramsey, while personally operating on far less reserves than I should be. I'm guilty, personally, of assuming the gravy train is constant and guaranteed.

But I think businesses should also have a reckoning after this. Maybe it is wise and proper to not chase every last dollar, to not put every resource into working capital, but save back cash reserves. If every company could operate for a time (a few months?) off reserves I think a lot of pressure would be alleviated right now.

I understand closing shop for a time (like a restaurant that has no customers now) but having reserves available to keep paying people and stay on some kind of footing just seems so wise.

Anyway, off my soap box. Like I say, I'm guilty of same. I hope/pray/intend to make changes so that my family isn't exposed to financial risk.
No business is going to leave that amount of cash sitting around not earning any kind of return. Unfortunately you'd probably be better off closing up shop and restarting from scratch from a pure business standpoint.

Sucks for everyone working at such a place, but that's the economic reality.

No citywide lockdown yet:

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/article/Houston-Mayor-Sylvester-Turner-gets-bipartisan-15144448.php

Quote:

Some of the top elected officials in Houston made clear on a conference call with Mayor Sylvester Turner on Wednesday that they agreed with him in resisting a complete lockdown of the city like has happened in the San Francisco Bay Area.

During the call with members of Congress and state legislators, Turner was asked if the city would resort to such a step. He said he didn't think that was the right course of action and immediately got backing from both Republicans and Democrats on the line, according to several sources who participated in the call.

According to Houston's Leading Information Source...

Quote:

The Bayport and Barbours Cut terminals, which were shut down after a worker was tested positive for COVID-19, will resume normal operations Friday, reports the Chronicle's Erin Douglas.
The Port Authority says it conducted an investigation regarding the worker's potential exposure, finding that his exposure to others was "fairly limited."
All of those who the worker was in contact with dare in self-quarantine.Vessel operations will resume this evening at 7 pm at both container terminals. Normal business operations will resume Friday morning.

So that's good news.

Just in case anyone here attended this mass...it's been buried by newer updates at this point.

Quote:

MARCH 19 9:55 p.m. St. Angela Merici Parish in Missouri City posted to Facebook Thursday, making parishioners aware that a married couple who attended the 8 a.m. Mass March 8 reportedly tested positive for coronavirus.

Father John Cahoon said the couple was seated in the seventh row from the front of the church on the left side, and the husband collapsed during the Mass before he was helped out of the church. Cahoon said several people helped him, and EMS treated him for dehydration. Cahoon said he was asymptomatic at the time.

Cahoon said the church has already notified all but one those individuals who came to the man's aid and asks anyone with that person's contact information to get in touch with the parish office at (281) 778-0400.

Cahoon is asking anyone seated in that specific area of the church on March 8 to review all CDC recommendations and contact your health provider.
