I'm gonna go on a limb here and say that just the 1st six weeks will not be the full extent. I look forward to the 2 more weeks, 2 more months, etc when we get close to that date they pulled out after having 4 months to stew on this. Just thinking about the amount of lost development of all these kids is astonishing.

I will be happy to be proven wrong but considering the history of the people making school and policy decisions locally, I totally expect HISD to not have any in person schooling definitely this fall and can see it going until the spring. This is in a school district that 70% of the students do not have sufficient internet for online learning and 55% do not have a laptop.

There are going to be a lot of free hotspots and laptops given out. I'm sure they'll be used solely for education.

Apparently they have already given out 50k laptops in the spring and they are giving out another 35k before school starts in the fall and they have already purchased 7k hotspots to give out. That is just staggering to me.

Question about state data vs local data:

The state website (dhs.texas.gov) shows that, to date, there have been 111 documented cases of Covid in children aged 1 and younger, 496 in children 1-9, and 1293 in children aged 10-19.

The data does specifically say that these are completed case investigations and the number does not include probable cases. But the percentages are based on a total of only 26,272 cases! They use this same 26,272 number to break down cases by age, gender, and race/ethnicity

The dashboard shows 282k cases reported.

The Houston/Harris County site shows 2000 cases in kids 0-9 and 3800 cases in kids 10-19 just in Houston/Harris Co.

I can't find where Houston/Harris County breaks deaths down by age (or any other factor).

This is obviously a big difference, and it appears the state website is grossly under-reporting case counts when they break it down by demographics.

There is a similar problem when you look at deaths. There have been 3532 deaths total, but when the state website breaks it down by age/gender/ethnicity, those numbers are based on only 728 deaths.

Anyone have any insight on this? Where can I go to get accurate information? Is there anywhere I can see the breakdown of deaths by demographic in Harris Co?

the reporting methods are so antiquated and clumsy that I wouldn't put much faith in demographic data

Ugh. The KHOU tracker tries to provide demographic info about deaths, but it's done for individual cases (there is no graph or table). And when you click the "more info" link, it literally takes you to posts on the Harris County Twitter account.

How have we managed to put a man on the moon yet we can't count? My faith in humanity dies a little more every day.

Edited to add: the CDC's data seems to be better. It shows deaths broken down by age for a total of 121374 deaths. The "official" count is 135991.

Makes sense that it would lag a little behind, and the CDC has a disclaimer on their website that it takes as much as 8 weeks to get a death certificate with the relevant info.

But that's data for the entire country, not just TX. However, there are less than 200 deaths total among people 24 and under, and only 31 for ages 14 and under. So, many states are zero for those young ages.

I think there's some debate to the bolded part now that Bexar county just retracted 3500 cases as they were counted positive when in reality they were probable...my guess is that isn't just limited to Bexar county

Actually, that number used for the demographics is so low compared to "actual" cases, it seems the DHS investigations are leaving out any data that's questionable.

26,272 isn't even 10% of the total number of cases that the state is reporting. But they don't put the same disclaimer on the 282k number.

On of my mom's sixth grade students had their laptop confiscated by the attorney general in the spring. Giving kids access to the internet with minimal supervision seems like a great idea!

Getting back to life as normal does not help them. That's it.

The virus isn't a hoax. But anyone that believes the response and data presentation that is creating economic panic and distress isn't being used as a political weapon is wearing blinders.

do you consider any "response and data presentation" that doesn't position the virus as overblown and a nothing burger to be "creating economic panic and distress?"

is acting as if everything is completely fine, and carrying on as totally normal, good sense, and not political at all?
