People trying to be "nice" and yielding the right-of-way (when they have the right of way) is very annoying. It slows things way down. Just GTFO of the way so that I can go and not worry about what you might be doing.

I will wait those people out in a game of reverse chicken until they properly take their right of way.
Always. Dude in front of my wife 2 wks ago was being the "nice" guy and letting a car leaving CVS cross over the road in front him. But nice guy forgot to tell the 2nd lane of traffic who promtply t-boned that sorry sucker.

Right of way in our little office complex does not exist. Its four buildings surrounding a parking garage and large outdoor dining/fountain space. Coming in or out of garage and thru surface parking out front to reach main road is frogger. Just nuts, surprised there arent more rager shootings. Only one so far...

On a related subject, why is it that more and more people turning left at a 4-way stop believe they have the right of way over the vehicle opposite them that is proceeding straight ahead when both parties are leaving their stop at the same time? I've had several near misses over the last year or two with those folks. I guess it may be more a case of "let's see who can jump out in the intersection first".

Except it isn't just TXDOT. MUTCD is the standard for North America and even a few other places.

As to the frontage roads, you may have a point.
DGAS, traffic engineers are the dumbest of the engineers out there, and that's saying something. Common sense and keeping things uniform for simplicity doesn't enter their feeble minds, it is in their nature to take something simple and complicate it.

Yes. This too. Although it often happens that I'm the one turning left and the jackass ruhtard going straight won't JUST GO. So I just take the turn but why the guessing game? When it is your turn, just DRIVE you idiots.

You ever seen a four-way stop in Pearland with a car at each sign? Makes those people lose all damn sense.
Jesus Christ, a straight road with 2 lanes in each direction makes people lose all damn sense, a 4 way stop might as well be quantum physics for most.

After driving through Ireland, Spain and Belgium for a month, I miss roundabouts. So much more efficient, when people know how to use them.

Problem here is it would take years for people to get used to them and not have your usual dumbasses stopping in the middle of it like at the Washington/Westcott one.

Even worse is when the person turning left doesn't have a signal on. So you think, "Okay, we're both going straight. Let's go." And then the jackass starts to turn left out of the blue and looks at you like you're an idiot when they have to slam on the brakes.

Yeah, you're right... nothing uniform and simple about something entitled "The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices".

Had a good 4-way stop experience recently. Everyone patiently and correctly waiting their turn, except Lance Armstrong coming in hot from 3 O'Clock. When 9 O'Clock gets his turn he makes his left, Lance was plowing ahead, had to try to force slam his brakes and took a nice tumble. Bonus for the driver that Lance did it all without hitting his car. Made my day.

Roundabouts dont have left hand turns. Two perpendicular streets meet at a roundabout. If you want to turn left from one to the other, you have to turn right onto the roundabout exit the roundabout by turning right at the 3rd street.
Not the roundabout by Buccee's on I-10. I've seen so many idiots just cut the short side of the circle to jump 4 cars on the flyover traffic back to firethorne.

I dislike when people try to be "nice" and stop to let people make left turns across 2+ lanes in heavy traffic.

In college I saw a guy in the right lane heading east (away from campus) on George Bush just before crossing Texas stop and leave a gap with a red light in front of him to let a guy make a left turn across traffic coming from what is now that Double Daves/ Panda Express parking lot on the right (believe they have a raised curb now so you can't do this anymore).

The guy pulling out drove across the first lane into the second one and was T-boned hard on the drivers side and seriously injured by a truck in the inside lane who had his view blocked by the "nice guy"'original stopper & had no way to expect someone will be pulling across traffic.

Ever since, then despite dirty looks or honks I refuse to leave a gap for people to go left when they need to turn right and figure out a better situation to U-turn later.

A friend of mine was making the left across traffic like you described. The nice person who left her the opening was waving her on, so she thought the road was clear. She pulled into the lane and got nailed in the passenger door. As a result, I will leave a hole, but won't wave people on.

I was someone at A&M that t-boned someone on Harvey pulling out like that.

Got a nice new truck + some pain & suffering courtesy the other driver's insurance company.

We've been over this. Right is ONLY correct if the median is 30' wide or more. It's in the MUTCD.

TxDOT Design Manual

Screw that, the image on the left is the only correct way no matter what. TXDOT can eat a D - they can't decide if service or frontage roads are 1 way or 2 way or cant' even make overpasses/cloverleaf turns uniform, so screw them.

Yeah. I feel like the "narrow median" example over complicates it. What about cars crossing the road with a median? They're going to be on the right side of the median. Not the left.
They are supposed to yield to the cars that are turning in the above example. There is no complication here. IF a car is turning in the above example, the cross traffic yields to them until it is clear.

Correct. But you can have the situation where a car from the left crosses the southbound lanes as there is no traffic, but stops in the median as there is northbound traffic. He's going to be on the right side of the median. Then a car going northbound wants to turn left....

FWIW, I live near an intersection like this and this scenario happens every week. At the end of the day, if people are considerate one way or the other and use a little common sense, all is well. But you get ass hats who think their way is the only way and get impatient, give people the bird, honk, etc.

Refer to the first part of my post - DGAS what the title of the manual is, it's stupid because it was designed by stupid people.

I can call anything "uniform" too, doesn't mean it's the best way to do it.

Cases like this is where the Vietnamese clearly have us beat. I prefer driving in Vietnam then here .

BTW a left hand turn in Vietnam can be between comical to a near death experience.

If turning left across a "narrow median" road, you're not supposed to cross until you can safely cross ALL the way over. You're not supposed to stop in the median unless it's a wide median road. Yes that means you might have to wait for a long time or a VERY long time, but the amount of time the driver has been waiting doesn't alter right-of-way rules despite what most Houston drivers seem to think!

The reason I ask, is hopefully the '99 isn't your class year. I would hope that someone calling me stupid, and my career as being the dumbest of all engineers would be coming from a petulant child, and not someone that is a peer.

I've dedicated close to 20 years now to improving the lives of others, people in my community, school-children, etc, and I can't believe someone your age would use your insults in such a blanket way. That's pretty pathetic.

Biggest issue in my neighborhood with people who, let's say are new to driving in America, like to make complete stops where not STOP sign exists.

I'll be at a STOP sign waiting to see if the oncoming car will turn right onto my street or continue driving in front of me. Then they will come to a complete stop (again, they have no STOP sign), and wait for me to pull out in front of them.

Four-way stops are always dicey no matter where you live, in my experience. Where Houston is unique is where you have a 2-way stop with a divided road running through, and ruhtards/canadians/pendejos are completely flummoxed by this situation.

Daily... DAILY... I see people on the divided road stop, with no stop sign, and yield right of way to people stopped on the cross street. And I also see foolios pulling out from the cross street in front of me on the divided road where I have no stop sign.

I used to get severe road rage and want to just plow into them. Now I go to my zen place and just try to drive defensively, assuming that all cars around me have no concept of road laws.

I work a mile from a roundabout and use it daily. All in/out roads are 30mph or less. It's a north/south 2 lane with entrances/exits to a highway, and there are two side roads in there too... it's weird I get it.

But I **** you not, I've seen a flipped vehicle in that roundabout before. How in the hell does that happen?

Another time, I'm in the roundabout about to exit to the on ramp to highway. The guy in front of me slams brakes and stops, appearing to give right of way to cars entering. I lay on horn, like I have several times before to cars that stop in the roundabout.
The guy throws it in reverse and backs into me!
We both exit roundabout, he pulls over so I do too and my heart rate goes up; he gets out and starts yelling at me as if wanting sympathy 'those cars were about to hit me!'

I didn't even know what to say.
