I haven't been to a lot of the joints listed here but a good burger can be found at M&M over in the medical center.
Glad someone else is on board (made a post on M&M a few pages back).
So I'm guessing thats not the same as this place on Wayside?

Noted. I'll hit it up soon. My goal since starting work at UH has been to try and not repeat lunch spots if I'm choosing myself. I'll add this to the list

I'll throw another off-radar burger in here - Kenny & Ziggy's patty melt. The Big Reubowski (Reuben and burger combined) is pretty awesome too.

Ooooo question though... is a patty melt a burger? I guess technically it is but I'm not sure I'd not put it in it's own category.

That is a good question. Part of me whats to say no because it seems like it would fall in the same category as say a pastrami sandwich, which is also technically a beef sandwich like a burger.

However, I can think of nothing that would separate a burger from a patty melt.

to me there are two components that make a burger. one, it's on bread. and two, it's a ground meat patty. no ground meat, no burger.

I would say a patty melt is a very defined set of ingredients. Regular sliced bread with the ground meat patty, cheese and grilled onions. If you put lettuce and tomato on it it is no longer really a patty melt correct?

Where as a burger is a much more broad concept. So I guess maybe we could call a patty melt a burger but not all burgers are patty melts. So it's a subcategory. Consensus?

But is a Coney a hotdog?

Sorry couldn't resist the JCI reference...

FYI to any who followed that thread, as a minor follow up I'd mentioned I needed a food truck for a company event and that I wanted a hotdog truck that wasn't JCI. Ended up with Midwest Coney Connection. They were great! Good stuff. Really good dog.

I also believe patty melts should be on rye bread.

Basically, it's a hamburger patty with Swiss cheese, carmalizec onions on rye bread toasted with butter.

If a patty melt is a burger why is it called a patty melt and not a burger?

Plus it's not on a hamburger bun

Btw, I have no dog in the fight of a patty melt burger debate. Just being a smart ass.

because it has a hamburger patty on it. the bun is not the crucial part. the place the "invented" the hamburger still serves them on plain white bread.

search your feelings. you know it to be true.

Yeah I'm on the "patty melt isn't a burger" wagon. The sourdough burgers hardly count too

So if we made a really crappy gringo taco with a hamburger patty rather than crumbled ground meat, is that a burger?

Serious question... as a hamburger is a Hamburg style sandwich in origin, right? I'm fairly certain it refers simply to a ground meat patty. Hence hamburger steak.

So would that crappy gringo taco be technically a "burger"?

I usually look to the first place it became popular. Which was Louis' Lunch in Connecticut.

Suffice it to say that the hamburger existed well before someone created a "hamburger bun". Therefore it's silly to insist that the bun is the essential component to make it a hamburger. It's a sandwich. Any bread will do. The form of the meat is what is important.

As for a taco, the tortilla existed for ages before we had a thing we called the taco. Putting meat and other things into it probably as well. The term taco came about referring to this pairing exclusively.

You can't say the same about the hamburger. The bun came about later.

Because a component of a patty melt is the melting of the cheese while the ground beef patty is finishing cooking. That is not a requirement for a hamburger.

A patty melt is a burger IMO. Agree that the type of bun is not a defining characteristic of what makes a hamburger a hamburger.

Say you go to Whataburger and order a #5, but instead of a bun, it's on Texas Toast. Still a burger, just comes with a different style of bread container.

For the record when I cook burgers at home (generally poorly I might add... I need to dedicate the time to hamburgers that I have to steak...) I prefer to eat them on regular white bread over a hamburger bun. I don't consider it "no longer a burger" for this fact.

Same for hotdogs. Prefer them in white bread over buns regardless as to whether they're steamed or not.
