Not under 700, but HISD has an entire sports district worth of normal attendance zone 4A schools.

Furr: 1135
North Forest: 1027
Wheatley: 983
Worthing: 869
Yates: 832
Scarborough: 781
Washington: 766
Kashmere:722

Consolidation is a great idea, but I'm not sure how it wouldn't cost more to do so. Scarborough for example was a school built when my parents were in High school. They we're sophomores when it opened. It was built decades ago to be a nice, big high school in a suburb. The reality is that school can't hold any more kids and now is essentially inner city. They had portable buildings on site the last time I drove by. Even if they tried to consolidate it with Waltrip (rival schools close by) it would be a mess. They would have to disperse kids else where to tear one school down to the ground and rebuild essentially as a midrise high school or spend even more money to buy a third property between the two to build. In the end the campus would be more efficient, but I can't see it being cheaper overall.

Thanks, Im pretty familiar with Waltrip, having gone there.

Consolidation is not a magic no brainer cost slasher and would need to be looked at in each case for sure.

For your example you would also have to take into account that Scarborough probably sits on a piece of property worth $15-20 million (and Waltrip maybe double that or more). There is significant money tied up in those particular campuses, and after redevelopment the amount added to the tax rolls would likely be even greater.

Good real estate both of those sites are... there's absolutely no way Scarborough's land is worth close to $15-20 million especially factoring in clearing cost for a redevelopment.

Of course, none of the "how we got here" items mentions a bloated bureaucracy of administrators.

I like how items 1 and 2 are Harvey. Yeah right, if it weren't for the hurricane they would have been swimming in money.

The entire reduction relies on items not under their control. Which may/may not happen. Hopes and Prayers planning.

I'm not saying there isn't fat to cut, but budget cuts in recent years targeted central office to spare the campus budgets. There isn't as much fluff there as you think there is.

LMFAO

I think Carranza was probably shocked at how much of a mess HISD is in. The guy never came across as a strong leader but maybe he is a behind the scenes type of guy in contrast to Terry Grier.

Sad what HISD is and what the people of Houston want in its direction and leadership.

From San Francisco to Houston to hired by DeBlazio in NYC.

Spoke with former coworkers at HISD - they said most people are in shock. No clue who will be interim Supt. during the budget crisis.

Also interesting to see the media take note that when asked about his accomplishments during his NYC presser, he talked a lot about SF and didn't mention anything about Houston.

Any organization that is in part run by the likes of Jolanda Jones will never be successful. She's a business school case study in certified bat sh*t crazy.

Let's be honest, HISD is the way it is because of the people that have been elected into those positions by the consituents, this all at the voters feet. It may not be popular by some on here, but you couldn't pay me enough to live in the city, I will be comfortable in the suburbs and my s*** drive.

chief Student Support Officer Mark Smith and Officer of Advanced Academics Adam Stephens are all expected to soon leave HISD, with board trustees scheduled to vote on their "resignation agreements" Thursday, according to a school board meeting agenda. Sarabia said in an interview Monday that he is retiring. Smith and Stephens could not be immediately reached to discuss reasons for their departures.
with five administrators quitting HISD who is left holding the rope?

I agree with your premise...but they aren't resigning on their own terms. They are being forced out.

Both of those positions strike me as the bloat administrative positions people like to gripe about.

WTF? How can you run a school district without an Officer of Advanced Academics?

By hiring a Manager/Director of Advanced Academics...
JJxvi

I dunno...would that still be under the district's Chief Academic Officer?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
If that position ends up still existing. The Board and Interim Supe have both mentioned they want to flatten the org.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Why do you need one over academics and one over advanced academics? Can't one person do both?

(To be fair i have no idea what positions HISD has. My district has one that does all of it, albeit a smaller district)
lunchbox
How long do you want to ignore this user?
At some point, with a large district, you have to split up duties because one person can't do it all.

That being said, HISD has used that excuse to the extreme.

The HISD board is a cesspool. Acute corruption and the black and brown infighting. What a zoo. A state takeover would be best for the students and parents of the district. Those who actually care about education anyway.

They signed up to lead a giant bureaucracy trying to educate people that don't value education. I guess they feel like they are actually accomplishing something through the graft since the day job is mostly doomed.

Is the HISD election on a random Monday in February when the teachers have an "in service" day with no class?

It will be interesting to over the next couple of years. I don't see how they have the funding to keep a lot of their expensive magnet / special programs going. Many of the top specialty schools have lost principals (supposedly the best ones in the district) in the last year.

The writing is on the wall that it might get ugly.

Current HISD board probably needs to check the balance on the race card. It is about to get some really heavy use.
BBRex
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I kind of wonder if this isn't the first shot. The state might wait for STAAR scores to come back, which could allow them to replace the board without any sort of fight.
