My AD sold and Rolex came and picked up all their display pieces. Also destroyed any Rolex signs. Pretty crazy. Working on establishing a new contact but very difficult in this market as I was a customer of them for years.

I guess there we'll always be enough demand from the ultra rich for Rolex. At some point soon though you'd have to image people saving up for a nice watch start to get tired of waiting and having to buy off ADs to get in line when there's more and more quality options these days.

Explains Tudor and Omega doing so well.

This is what I find interesting. They historically haven't been the low production / scarce luxury option. There's plenty of established brands that have gone that route.

They were the sporty luxury / iconic brand for having made it. Or had some success. Something the average middle class white collar guy could aspire to achieve. What's the point of sponsoring every high brow sporting league / event if the average person that can afford to buy your product, can't?

One could argue they've lost their identity. Their marketing and design isn't matching their operational strategy.

To be fair I don't think this is something Rolex planned.

They are trying to combat it by (1) raising retail prices, (2) allowing ADs to get into secondary market, (3) expanding production.

Before social media you could see an advertisement in a magazine or see some mediocre photos on the Rolex website.



But now people with awesome camera work and amazing macro shots can really bring watches to life and create desirability.

Yep, in terms of "bespokeness" and retail price Rolex doesn't stand out amongst watchmakers.

It's the history, iconic designs, and marketing which all give them a ridiculous level of market share and demand.

How so? There are car brands even more exclusive than rolls Royce and Bentley, just as with Rolex. Rolex is obtainable, but only to an affluent consumer

Rolex is Porsche. Great engineering, costs more than others with similar performance, loyal fans and owners. Everyone that sees one admires it. But it's not the height of automobile craftsmanship.

JLC is closer to Bentley or Rolls. Or maybe Patek.

As a semi-Rolex fan, I'm just celebrating that they discontinued the Milgauss (for now).

Not that it may matter for value because I'm not selling mine.

Would also wear the **** out of that Daytona posted earlier but will need wife to go back to work to spring for that.

I know tag heuer is hate it or love it, but I have always really liked the classy look and solid build of the carrera. And for under a grand most of the time for this model. Can't beat it.

I love vintage Heuer pieces, but haven't found a Tag piece yet that moves the needle for me. That said, my dad wore a Tag my entire childhood and he beat the absolute hell out of it and never had it serviced, but it always worked.
