I like it even better in grey. Shame the nearest AD is in Denver because this is almost exactly what I've been looking for, but would much prefer to see in person before dropping $20k

I'm not sure that minor repairs will cost enough to get you into Rolex territory.
Most definitely not, but my purchases of watches and jewelry over the years would. The good news is, my guy was busy while I was in the store, so I just took a quick glance. Plenty of Rolex's in the case but I think they were all preowned. I got out unscathed so marriage saved.

Looks like its not in stock. Jeremy Oster is a GREAT watch guy. His podcast Keeping Time is fantastic if you're into independent brands. Highly suggest listening to the back catalog. Lots of great watchmakers.

If it is the Daytona with the panda dial it's around $50k. Rolex and the high-end watch market has exploded recently. If you bought a Rolex 5-10 years ago you beat the markets by a mile. If you want one, let me know. I can get anything.

Also, good luck trying to find basically anything at an Authorized Dealer. Any watch they get is sold before it hits the case. Inventory is so slim, many of the Rolex display watches they have are not real watches and have no movement inside.

Market corrected a little recently so white Daytona is not quite that high right now.

All The display models I have seen are real watches with movements, they just won't sell them.

Ahh yes. Sorry I missed it. Best way to get Rolex these days is gray market, but you can still get from the AD. Just have to build a relationship with them and most likely spend $ on things other than watches.

Actually have two but that ain't happening. I have my Milgauss and my wife wears her mothers. It's a ~1984 Rolex but not sure which one. You would have to fight her to the death to get hers.

Don't know what exactly you're referring to by "state of the world", but if it's supply chain stuff - we've been told that is not the issue here (which I believe). It seems to be due to a recent explosion in interest in luxury watches in the past several years (Exhibit A is the guy typing this) with demand skyrocketing. The watch manufacturers have their motivations to not increase supply to meet this demand. Rolex is the most notable example of the inability to purchase retail, but we're now starting to see it with other brands as well.

Good to know. I assumed supply chain but had not realized demand had skyrocketed.

China, whose millionaires are notoriously brand-focused, is the biggest driver of luxury spending in the world. In one year, 2019, their share of spending in the worldwide luxury market increased from 11% to 20%.

There are not enough Rolexes to satisfy the Chinese market by itself, much less the rest of the world.

It will get worse as the world reopens, since most Chinese cannot travel internationally right now and probably won't be able to for the next few years, so they're limited to the domestic supply of luxury goods. When they can travel internationally again, get ready for availability to completely evaporate. These are people who will have no problem buying $40k in jewelry from a random jeweler just to get a $10k datejust if it makes it happen quicker. I think any grey market dealer should be learning Mandarin, that's where explosive growth will come in the next 5 years.

The article references an October survey of "1,500 Chinese adults with more than Rmb500,000 ($78,480) in annual household income". The survey "found that 88 per cent of respondents planned to keep or increase spending on luxury watches"

Watches in China are increasingly seen not only as a status symbol but as a hedge against inflation.

And as many Russian oligarchs are finding out the hard way, deposits in western banks and large yachts are hard to keep away from authorities.

A handful of watchboxes with 8-9 figures worth of watches? Much easier to keep safe or quietly offload.

I guess. Doesn't really matter if the currency where you live is worth less than toilet paper. Just ask the Russians.

This was predicted several weeks ago with the sanctions but amazingly the rouble has rebounded to about where it was right before the war.

Sidebar: Russia's Central Bank governor is one of the best if not the best monetary policymaker in the world (and a far cry from our latest nominees). They've implemented strict capital controls and raised their key rate to 20% to avoid inflation and a collapse of the currency.

Any recommendations for a ladies watch below $1K?

I don't know anything about ladies watches, so I'm kind of just browsing around the same brands I know for men's watches (a lot of Swatch Group stuff). Found this one that looks nice for the price - automatic, 80 hour power reserve, sapphire crystal:

https://www.jomashop.com/tissot-watch-t099-207-11-113-00.html

It's an OT school graduation gift for my girlfriend who isn't much into jewelry but is supportive and interested in my new found hobby of luxury watches. She occasionally will wear one of two cheap quartz watches, so I thought something a slight step up might be a special gift to ease her into watches. I like how the display case back on that Tissot shows off the movement, which would be something cool for her but what I think would be really better would be to find a watch that I could engrave on the back - the date of her graduation, and technically she'll be a Dr. now, so engraving her name with that new prefix would be nice.

Who does engraving?

I can't comment to that ladies watch in particular, but it looks nice and that Tissot Power 80 movement is awesome for the price. I have a high end collector friend who has bough and worn multiple PRX Powermatic 80 men's watches and ended up selling a few of them off his wrist to other folks who admired them.
