Love the juxtaposition of gold watches on rubber straps. I feel like the solid gold look was an 80s thing and older cool guys can pull it off like Jimbo, but young guys look like they're trying too hard.

Nomos is closer to Wellington than it is Vacheron.

I'll have to take your word. I've never heard of Wellington.

Another $100-$300 watch company.

Then again I'm not sure you know Vacheron either considering their watches start multiples of a Nomos and tend to be more expensive on average than Rolex.

For a guy who is proud of his Seikos you sure have a weird irrational hate for Nomos. Wife leave you for a German guy or something?

Seiko is a fantastic watch. I would put Grand Seiko finishing up there with FP journe and that's not a typo

I'm pretty indifferent on Nomos to be honest. They seem nice, but too plain for my taste. They're expensive enough to be a conversation starter, but not worth the money for me. I'd rather buy a couple of cheaper watches or save just a tad more for a Tudor or Breitling.

I'm not a watch nerd that can tell you the difference between all the in house movements, but I enjoy dreaming just like anyone. I'm more just hammering you because you lost it with my Timex comment that was in jest over a lower middle brand.

No, but the top notch Seikos are amazing as well. My special edition green seiko snr045 is on par

They have a couple movements up there (on watches 50k+), but that's not the general norm for GS.

I mean we pay him $20.5k per day, I'd get a President too

Which is prolly why he got that new yachtmaster flex last year.

Assuming it is in excellent condition, I would say that is price in today's mkt. You could also get on a waitlist for 2+ yrs and buy for MSRP which is half that.

it's a little high for ebay where you have to pay taxes. If you want a batman jubilee go look at Rolex Forums or Watchuseek and buy one for that, with no taxes

Got my YMII back! Had to send it in shortly after I got it as I noticed a gigantic speck of dust inside the case after owning it shortly that I somehow missed when buying.

Pictured next to my GS that is just amazing quality.

Read an article on this Sinn 358 Pilot Chrono today and was impressed. Never been a huge Sinn fan but this is cool...

TL;DR: Advice on places/people to talk to for my first time buying a decent watch.

Looking for some advice, if this isn't the place to post this I apologize (I've been following the thread for a month or so now).

I'm looking at being forced to upgrade my watch collection. I love wrist watches, always have. Right now I have 9 that I rotate through, a few dress watches in various metals and face colors and a few sport watches. I probably purchase (trade for) a new watch every 4-6 months on average.

The only watches I've ever owned are Fossil.

I got started in them as a kid because my aunt dated the CEO for a long time, so we used to get watches like they were candy. Then once I was in college and older, I realized you could trade a broken watch (or a new one for that matter) for 50% off the price of a new one, and I liked that as a form of warranty protection but also to keep the collection fresh.

Anyhow, I've never had any problem with Fossil before the last couple years. Obviously my standards aren't high, but they have wide selection and they show the time. However, they have started recently making their bracelets very very cheaply - almost feels like plastic. Rattles in a weird way when wearing, and just feels junky.

So what I'd like to know from you guys is where to begin my journey away from the only brand I've ever known, and something of a higher quality. Looking for a shop or person who can shoot me straight and help find watches to my liking. I live in College Station but come to Houston every month or so.

I'd thought of getting a Rolex once I hit a certain income level as a sort of reward/motivation to myself, but it seems now's not the time for that (current supply/demand). That's probably the only brand I'd consider spending multiple thousands of dollars on, my thinking being it could be a special thing to pass down to someone (nephew, young cousin, etc) when I'm gone. While there are other brands with a product as good or better, Rolex is the name everyone knows. So I feel like if the recipient isn't a watch connoisseur, they'll still appreciate a Rolex while they might not understand the value of Patek.

Anyhow, if I have been happy with Fossil thus far, I don't see needing to spend thousands to have watches I enjoy wearing. Price range I'd say is probably $500-$1,000 (again unless it's an heirloom piece).

Any recommendations on where to venture out into finding nice(r) watches would be greatly appreciated.

those are all brands that will give you something well made. some have better bang for the buck than others.
I'd add Hamilton, Tissot and Glycine to this list

Hamilton certainly seems very well respected and sitting comfortably in my range.

Unfortunately - I haven't liked anything I've seen of theirs. Maybe just haven't looked enough. Don't know how to describe my style, but haven't found a Hamilton that catches my eye yet.

You mentioned Rolex if you had a bigger budget.

Take a look at Longines.

If you like Rolex subs, the HydroConquest could be worth a look. They will be on the high end of your budget.

Sinn is amazing and has great history as a brand. Really like their tegimentation (?) Process.

Yes.

I'm suddenly starting to really like the idea of them. Theory seems to be they probably could compete with higher end watches if Swatch didn't stop them from competing with Omega. But Swatch essentially slots their brands and is determined to keep features and prices in line accordingly.

They seem to be a really nice watch option for the $1k-$2.5k range to bridge from a Seiko / Hamilton/ Tissot budget to a Tudor / Breitling/ Omega budget.
