Wearing an omega today as well. SMP chrono Rose gold with the matte bezel. I think this is a Europe only exclusive I haven't seen any other in person.

What kind of appreciation do you think this watch will see in, say, 5-10 years (if any)?

If you're looking for a lot of appreciation I'd go with Rolex, AP, Patek, or similar.

I wouldn't say a lot of appreciation or depreciation here with this one

If anyone likes midsize watches This one is 37.5mm and probably the cheapest SS Patek Philippe you will see. Listed on chrono for 18k I can get it to you cheaper. It's mine but with a jeweler in LA.

TL;DR: Advice on places/people to talk to for my first time buying a decent watch.

Looking for some advice, if this isn't the place to post this I apologize (I've been following the thread for a month or so now).

I'm looking at being forced to upgrade my watch collection. I love wrist watches, always have. Right now I have 9 that I rotate through, a few dress watches in various metals and face colors and a few sport watches. I probably purchase (trade for) a new watch every 4-6 months on average.

The only watches I've ever owned are Fossil.

I got started in them as a kid because my aunt dated the CEO for a long time, so we used to get watches like they were candy. Then once I was in college and older, I realized you could trade a broken watch (or a new one for that matter) for 50% off the price of a new one, and I liked that as a form of warranty protection but also to keep the collection fresh.

Anyhow, I've never had any problem with Fossil before the last couple years. Obviously my standards aren't high, but they have wide selection and they show the time. However, they have started recently making their bracelets very very cheaply - almost feels like plastic. Rattles in a weird way when wearing, and just feels junky.

So what I'd like to know from you guys is where to begin my journey away from the only brand I've ever known, and something of a higher quality. Looking for a shop or person who can shoot me straight and help find watches to my liking. I live in College Station but come to Houston every month or so.

I'd thought of getting a Rolex once I hit a certain income level as a sort of reward/motivation to myself, but it seems now's not the time for that (current supply/demand). That's probably the only brand I'd consider spending multiple thousands of dollars on, my thinking being it could be a special thing to pass down to someone (nephew, young cousin, etc) when I'm gone. While there are other brands with a product as good or better, Rolex is the name everyone knows. So I feel like if the recipient isn't a watch connoisseur, they'll still appreciate a Rolex while they might not understand the value of Patek.

Anyhow, if I have been happy with Fossil thus far, I don't see needing to spend thousands to have watches I enjoy wearing. Price range I'd say is probably $500-$1,000 (again unless it's an heirloom piece).

Any recommendations on where to venture out into finding nice(r) watches would be greatly appreciated.

those are all brands that will give you something well made. some have better bang for the buck than others.
I'd add Hamilton, Tissot and Glycine to this list

If you bump up your range to 1500-2000, Nomos is where I would look. Truly the best bang for your buck I've found. In house movements. Their own unique look and style. Not a giant dinner plate on your wirst.

If you think the appearance of a watch is all that matters then you should stick with something cheap.

Who needs a sub if you can have an Invicta? Am I right?

Joe Boudain

Nomos appeals to the watch equivalent of beer snobs. They look like a $200 Daniel wellington, but they have incredible movements tucked inside. Very few people will care enough about the movement to pay $4k for such a bland watch, but those who will, care A LOT

I dont think anyone argued that appearance was all that mattered. I've got no dog in this fight, but from what insee it was all discussion about looks, not on quality etc.

i don't know that i'll ever pay the price of a Nomos watch. but i also don't think the timex above looks particularly like the nomos indicated, either.

the timex looks like a knock off hamilton field watch and the nomos looks like a german bauhaus design to me.

Hamilton certainly seems very well respected and sitting comfortably in my range.

Unfortunately - I haven't liked anything I've seen of theirs. Maybe just haven't looked enough. Don't know how to describe my style, but haven't found a Hamilton that catches my eye yet.

Nomos feels like a nuvo rich Braun watch to me. While I appreciate the in-house movement, I usually like it presented in a more classical form factor. Old school watchmaking in an ultra-mod case feels weird to me....but I understand that tension is cool to some.

That's why they have 31 flavors...

This is what I currently have. (The navy and black sport watches on the right I just wear to the gym and the bottom right one I don't really like, I wear it working cattle, etc.)

I think it also somewhat makes it harder in that I wear gold way more often than silver. This might be a stupid take, but I feel like with my Aggie ring it looks better to match with a gold watch, belt buckle, etc. Haven't been into the mixed metals until recently but that's growing on me (bottom row, third from the right).

Don't know if this is really the way to describe it, but I think my sport watch style leans toward bulkier/blocker. For dress watches I just like elegant (as elegant as you can get from Fossil, haha).

I love Hamilton.. think they're a good bang for the buck.

Check out the Hamilton Khaki King Auto.. on steel bracelet is my favorite. Can be had at Jomashop right not for $562

Also, both watches by them made for the Interstellar film are really cool to me.

Coopeer's watch: the pilot day date w/black dial

And Murph's watch: the Khaki Field Murph. Super nice, but around $850 grey market.

Also I don't think you can go wrong with any of their mechanical field watches.

Their nicest watch IMO is the Intramatic Chrono, but even on gray market it comes in close to 2k out of budget.

Hamilton makes a nice watch.
