So…the Rolex my dad gifted me has a problem. Not a bad problem but an interesting one.

The watch is from 1988. It was made with Tritium markers on the dial and tritium on the hands.

The half life of tritium is 12.3 years and it's 36 years old so down to 12.5%. It's no longer to the point where it's luminescent.

I talked to the local Rolex dealer and his watchmaker. It's David Gardner's so he knows what he's doing. He agrees it's tritium. It dates from before the change was made to Luminova and then SL.

He says the face and hands can be replaced by Rolex with new ones with SL.

The question is should that happen.

The watchmaker said the time to do it (if I choose to) is when it's in for servicing since it would would be broken down anyways.

I'm of the mind to not do that. Mainly because the watch has a story and that's part of the story. It's not terribly expensive. He said about $550 to make the changes. The only real reason is you can't see the dial at night.

Does anyone have an opinion? Or have you changed a face and hands?

Speaking from experience having taken a vintage Rolex to them for service, DONT DO IT! Find a reputable watch maker / repair option and use them. Never ever take a vintage watch to Rolex for service!

I know the guy to use in Dallas but can't help with specifics in other markets.
