Keep the steel and dome skeleton and do whatever the rodeo and Texans want to put under it. Rodeo needs more exhibit space. Texans don't know what they need.
Probably the best idea I've heard.

My idea was always take the sides off part of it. Leave some on others. Make the dome into a large covered area with some of the vendor space. Also keep the bathrooms. Make it into side concert venue during rodeo.

How about something that won't attract hoodrats or trigger blue collar individuals to have fist fights in front of their chubby kids? I'm for anything that fits that criteria.

People who think the Dome isn't iconic were probably born after 1990.

It has also been 21 years since the last Astros game in the dome. Pretty much a generation has already gone by with it being empty.

completely wrong, but I can say this a rock-solid, indisputable fact:

People who want the Dome to stay around in ANY physical shape - skeleton, parking garage or some other boondoggle conception - are either crooks or morons.

First of all that is an opinion. Not a fact.

Funny you say that when the real obstacle to doing anything with the dome has always been the Texans - a wonderfully-run organization led by people who genuinely expect Harris County taxpayers to spend tens of millions to demolish the dome to build another parking lot and let them collect revenue from selling tailgating passes.

You tear-everything-down people should look into demolition and construction costs for that nifty little idea.

Have you seen the annual maintenance costs to keep it in it's still unusable condition?

I provided some budgets for part of the new dome plan and everything I saw was a farce, no way it could be done how they "planned" in Ed's budget and that's not even including the lack of AC.

That's kind of what I was getting at with the repurpose question. It has got to be incredibly expensive to operate when everything is working. It's probably an asbestos lined mold factory at this point.

Demo and paving it over isn't cheap, but making it usable for anything, even a skeleton/shell, is going to be expensive too. Since it's county deal, you can count on some jackass blowing through all the cash and then skipping town before anything gets done, whatever option you choose because you won't have the NFL and some billionaire owner breathing down your neck and managing the contract. That's the problem with these kind of deals. A team owner gets the county to build it, they take the revenue and then when it's no longer useful, they just walk away from a major encumbrance with zero liability. Nice gig if you can swing it.

It's an historic structure, but no where near self supporting. I'm having a hard time seeing it do anything but sit there and rot for another 20 years. I think there's a very good chance that it will sit abandoned for longer than Rangers used their second Arlington stadium.

Anyway, something to aspire to:

Pontiac Silverdome, where the Lions used to play. It sat rotting for a good long while before they actually demolished it.

To be fair it is in the Detroit metro area, so it's not like it was an eyesore. No rush on the demo.

If Yankee Stadium can be torn down, so can the Astrodome.

It's iconic to Houstonians but it isn't like the Roman Colliseum or something.

Well, we did spend millions to renovate an abandoned underground cistern.

Remember that debacle?

I wonder if its been re-abandoned yet.

That's the thing about underground cisterns, they're always abandoned.

We really do have a middle school student council approach to running a government plus a few folks doing shady real estate deals.

They're as effective as my middle school student council, we didn't even get to use a vending machine that Pepsi paid the school to stick in a corner.

I am starting to believe that this is some sort of experiment/ real life test. How long until the dome collapses without any maintenance? Also, where is the failure point and what is the failure type? Or we can consider it some sort of modern art.

Cash flow matters. No one will finance this deal, just like the rest of the failed attempts.

It just isn't that important from an architectural history perspective. Way past time to take her down.
