speaking of New York...

it's the tearing down of places like Penn Station that has folks hesitant to do likewise to the dome

Penn Station is iconic globally. The Astrodome isn't even iconic to most Houstonians. Not even in the same ballpark.

it used to be at least somewhat iconic and famous

then they built a stadium right next door that makes it look like a speed bump

the current Penn Station is a ****hole

coincidentally, constructed at about the same time as the Dome

Penn Station also has a boat-load more people and activities going on than the Astrodome ever did.

Trains, buses, throngs of people vs. baseball games for 1/2 the year.

I'm not a civil engr, but I would venture a guess that design considerations are a bit different for the 2 venues. Not to mention running large machines that vibrate quite a bit underneath a building takes special care to ensure it stays standing up.

the belief that the Dome's architecture and historic "beauty" even remotely approaches that of the original Penn Station is the dumbest part of this whole discussion

Yeah but the Stros didn't play at Penn Station, so f it. Keep the dome!!!

Giant air-conditioned stadiums are cash incinerators in the best of circumstances. It takes inattentive tax payers to get them built in the first place and then selectively attentive taxpayers to keep them maintained or merely get them transformed in to something marginally less useless than a mold repository. You put an "icon" in the care and custody of the gubmint and this is what you get.

Ed found a way to get around another vote. However, as others noted, it sill still cost taxpayers with maintenance, upkeep and other electrical/water/trash/sewer expenses.

Tear the damn thing down and build an outdoor music pavillion so I don't have to keep driving to the Woodlands to see a concert
Or turn into a giant air conditioned venue for concerts so you don't cancel large festivals due to weather.

Maybe I'm just old but not sure if there are any more conceptual 'fun' events that seem as nauseating to me as an indoor music festival.

A Senate committee voted Monday in favor of a bill that would require Harris County residents to approve a county project to renovate the Astrodome by raising its floors and installing parking underneath.

Yeah but it pays well paid engineering and architecture contractors in spades.

Was the a rumor about a giant reservoir under the dome? Thus causing future problems with any renovations

I am sure OTC would have loved to have 9 acres of covered space for exhibits...when oil prices go up more.

Quote:

Just under 65,000 people wandered the exhibits at Houston's NRG Park, down from 68,000 last year and 95,000 in 2015. Attendance has plunged nearly 40 percent since hitting a record 108,000 in 2014, the peak of the last oil boom.

"Revenue generating shape". Give me a break Ed! It can generate $200,000,00.00 a year in revenue but when expenses are $300,000,000.00 a year the taxpayers are getting screwed!

What's up with Ed's hard on for the dome? No one really wants it and it will cost a fortune to turn it into anything that has been proposed. Tear it down and you can free up 9 acres of parking which will at least start to pay down its cost as opposed to doing nothing while we keep paying for it.

He and that idiot John Culberson are cut from the same cloth. Their "legacy" outweighs common sense and fiscal responsibility.

If we're just throwing away money...let's renovate the hell out of it...let the Astros play one or two "throwback series" a year. Heck host a Division Series game...the ghosts of Ray Knight, Walt Weiss, and Jim Leyritz are pissing in Judge Hofheinz's hidden suite. They need to be exorcised!

Heck the McNairs like wasting money too...they can jump on nostalgia wagon as well and host one regular season game and honor "The House of Pain".

Has there ever been a big stadium anywhere repurposed into anything?

Has there ever been a building with the rough dimensions of the Dome used for anything remotely productive apart from being a stadium?

At this point I could see Reliant/NRG ending its useful life and getting mothballed while they build Gallery Furniture stadium across 610 at the old Astroworld site. We could have a dead stadium tour including that big thing at Rice that no one cares about, which is a shame, because it's actually a great place to watch football after mid-October. Throw in Lakewood "Church" while you're at it if you give Osteen a cut of the proceeds.

Apart from the smell of an indoor swamp, they could use the below grade part of the bowl as a stocked pond.

Worth calling the Bass Pro guys, probably.

Almost a 4 year bump. Dome still stands, no tangible plan, and a different county judge.

Keep the steel and dome skeleton and do whatever the rodeo and Texans want to put under it. Rodeo needs more exhibit space. Texans don't know what they need.
