New to the area and I'm adjusting to the new selection of cuisine. The jalapeno klobasnek is the ultimate bfast meal in my opinion.

Also, what is the rib situation like? I like Southern style, but sometimes I crave a good Memphis style dry rub. Any hot tips are greatly appreciated.

Haha, well played.

I promise it wasn't a troll attempt, I'm not very good at that. It was more of an effort to not be culturally offensive after catching **** from czech friends. And I don't like kolaches, if I wanted fruit and bread I'd make a cobbler.

But seriously, anybody other than Shipley's make a good kolache, pig-in-a-blanket, or klobansek? I've yet to try the BBQ one, I've had the Big Earl and wasn't impressed. If they put jalapenos inside the Big Earl, that would be what I'm looking for.

As a footnote, while we're talking about great food. I sometimes take pizza dough and roll up Slovacek jalapeno or garlic sausage(without the skin), cheese, and pickled jalapenos inside of them. Bake them for a little while at 375 and voila, the best bfast in the world IMO. But when I have to be at work at 5, the last thing I'm going to do is make homemade klobasneks in the mornings.

Most of the ones I've had in the houston area are markedly inferior to what my family members make. Crappy yeast roll bread with little greasy ass yankee style sausages inside.

Mass produced bleh. There are better to be had, but difficult to find in the Houston area, apparently.

And who doesn't like a poppyseed or cream cheese kolache? Blows any cobbler I've had out of the water.

I'm part German and part Czech, FYI.

In all seriousness give Valero a shot. They bake them in store each morning. They might be frozen to begin with but they're honestly not bad. They're not very big so you need to get a couple. The only downside is if they've been out a while the bread will be crunchy.

Not all Valeros have them though. It's got be a decent sized Valero in a decent part of town. They're more for grabbing on the go and eating in the truck.

Try the jalapeño and sausage ones at shipley's on North Main. They use different dough and they are just better at that location...

Haha, so I guess you mean you descend from Eastern Bloc peasant stock. That's cool. People of Nordic descent still don't give a f ck and call them kolaches.

FWIW, The term Koblasnek is unique to Czechs who migrated to Texas. They're sort of a Texas regional food that went national, though there are other ethnicities that made sausage roll type pastries.

The conflation with Kolache is a common error, as us the misuse of the singular Kolach and the plural Kolache, by adding an unnecessary S to the plural form.

You wouldn't say chineses, would you?

I still say most of them I've tried locally were OK, food-wise, but FAR from a proper Kolach, sausage or no.

I love how whereever you are, the food is just mediocre. But over in XXX land where I grew up, it's absolutely phenomenal.

If you can't find a good kolache in Houston, you probably can't find a good titty bar either.

Sing it brother.

Revival's kolache and kloblosnics are awesome, when they make them. The only thing I've had in town that resemble my grandmother's. Well, the fruit ones at least. We are from up north (MN and SD) and never heard of sausage in kolache dough, except as a variation from Czech defectors. It just never took off up there. I will defend Shipley's over any other donut chain, but not them or "Kolache" Factory when it comes to this.

Half Czech (from my Mom's side) here.

Raised on kolache my Czech grandmother would make in their farm house on the Bernard prairie.

Favorite: Poppy seed.
(Close) Runner-up: Cottage cheese

And don't know why, but my Mom's aren't as good as the one Grandma made. Maybe Mom needs to get that mixing bowl Grandma used for over 70 years to make them.

Anyway, rarely I have run across a place in the 'tine that sells what I consider to be authentic kolache

(and why in the hell is spell check flagging "kolache" )
