Dog Boarding?

So I might need to board my dog from time to time given my career choice and would like to find a good place.

I called Houston Dog Ranch and they seem too bureaucratic to me, they want forms and interviews and temperament tests and want to conduct their own health test despite having vet records...and they are pretty high priced.

I called Dog's Dream and they seem a bit more relaxed, they just want shots (including kennel cough which Clyde doesn't have yet). Their rate was $20/night.

Any other suggestions?

We've had pretty good luck with Best Friends...dog came home with ticks once and they made it right.

Petsmart, but they are not much cheaper than Houston Dog Ranch (which I just visited today).

$20 is cheap. Have you actually checked the place out?

they're torturing dogs now?

what does the $20 include. I bet they just keep him locked up all day and take him out three times a day with no play time.

I took my dog to Rover Oaks in Katy for one weekend. They were a little on the high side, but they took very good care of him.

Look them up and get rates. I think there is one ITL, too.

I just called Best Friends, they seem good. Houston Dog Ranch must be where the art gallery socialites' dogs stay when they are getting dolled up for the Chronicle photo shoots. They are too uptight.

I also called my normal vet who is 1.5 hrs away but they will board for $18/night! Gotta love country folk.

You might try privileged pets. I think they are about 24-25 bucks a day, but they generally walk the dogs and give them some play time. They also have a service in which they offer a pet sitting service where someone will come to your house and feed and walk the dog(24-25 bucks per day). We did the latter of the two and it was very handy to have even though it was every other day. I know Sass takes Mo over there for stays when they are out of town sometimes, and they have a really good training program. It is a little higher, but you get what you pay for.

It really depends on the extras you want your dog to have. The going rate for a boarding place that does nothing for your dog but feeds them (has no vet, doesn't check on them outside of feedings, and no extras) is about 18 bucks.

Barks 5th ave is cheap but they keep your dog in a crate. the kind most of us have at home, but if you pay extra ...they can participate in their doggie daycare with other dogs during the day.

Lakewood Forest Kennels are like 15 bucks (i'm sure i'm off a buck?) a night with an indoor and outdoor run. They bathe your dog (mandatory) as soon as it gets there to help prevent the spread of fleas. However, they're always super busy and if your dog has any special need ...you're screwed. They're great though if you just need a dog to be feed and given water.

If you're willing to drive a bit out, Waggin Tails in Fulshear is really good.

+3 for Privileged Pets in Katy. Mo, Mr. Sass and I like the place.

It's about $25 a day and includes playtime, etc. in the price. Mo is always clean when we pick him up. They supervise the dogs during playtime and make sure they are with other dogs of the same size and temperment. They coordinated the vet records directly with our vet, so I didn't have to deal with it.

If you need any training for your pup, they offer it with boarding for $75 a day. Jack (the trainer) is a former LEO and has YEARS of experience training all sorts of dogs from casual pets to narcotic dogs. He worked with us afterward to make sure Mo was doing well.

Also, Privileged Pets has outdoor and indoor kennels. Our pup was kept inside when boarded, but I don't know who gets to stay outside. You may want to ask if you want Clyde to have more outdoor fresh air.

What about a board & train? I'm looking to do this in the near future, just for general obedience.

I've talked to Man's Best Friend, but am sort of cautious about the training that would be done at the more commercial places.

I have had several dogs (well my parent's, when I was growing up) trained and boarded at Man's Best Friend, BW8 & I-10 location.

My dog I have now, was obedience trained there, and I board her there frequently when I leave town. Actually she was there this last weekend.

I'm not sure what the prices start at, because I do the max, so she gets all the play time, extra treats, ice in her water, yada yada yada, i'm a sucker. However, she loves it there, as soon as we pull in the parking lot, she starts to go nuts in the car, all excited about going in, so I'd venture to say they're treating her pretty nice.

madams...the board and train is what Sass was talking about. I think for around 750, they will board the dog for 10 days, work with the owners on what they need to do, and also do some follow up visits to see how the mutt is doing. I'm pretty sure Mrs Rooster is getting fed up with the Deutscher Scheissejagdhund and we will be doing this in the very near future.

In the hour we sat with Jack in his driveway, he had Schoko almost laying down on command. It was pretty amazing to see how fast they will learn.

My dog is at Urban Tails as we speak for Puppy Tails and I know they require boarding... but you'll find it on the "beaurocratic" side of things. I personally am comforted by that level of attention to detail and selectivity. It makes me feel more comfortable my dog is having a positive experience and will come back to me healthy. I can actually watch my dog play right now on a webcam they have available.

Fill his water bowl up, throw a bag of dog food in the back yard and your set.

ElectricAg, you are forgetting about the PETA sympathizing, nosy neighbors next door who don't think twice about sending nastygrams to the management company with complaints about animal mistreatment!

(Ha, when proofreading I realized I typed PETA as PITA at first. Same thing, right?)
