omg - I remember seeing a pregnant dancer at some club in a run-down Gulf Coast town in Mexico.
I left soon after.

Delivered some Thanksgiving donations to a church in Sunnyside once. It was on a street somewhere around Scott and Bellfort, there was major shadiness going on, and I thought my car was gonna get stolen when I went in with the goods.

I used to do warranty for a home builder. I got a warranty call at a "neighborhood" in Sunnyside. Most neighborhoods have houses and streets right, not here. This was more like a habitat for humanities type of place. There was one house that you could tell was one of ours, fairly new amongst a slew of old shacks. In an area of about 20-25 homes, there were 4 houses like this, so I can only assume that we built a few here as some sort of goodwill thing before I started. It was one of the areas of the city where they wouldn't send you by yourself. You always went with at least one companion, and only between the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. No emergency calls at all. If you had an afterhours emeergency you had to wait til the next day. I was petrified there, but luckily nothing happened to me, but I did talk to one of the guys I worked with who actually built the houses there. He had some crazy tales.

1 - One time he had a roofer up nailing down felt when he heard his generator stop. He walked over to the side of the roof to see his generator running off in some kids hands.

2 - He had an electrician beaten nearly to death for the tools in his truck in broad daylight.

3 - They heard a horrible banging sound one day over and over. They go to look outside and there is a suburban slamming into the back of a car rolling down the street over and over. Instead of pushing or pulling the car with his burban, he is hitting it, pulling back, and then ramming it again to keep it moving. Incredible.

Fiesta Ballroom after hours... Well... it was me, a buddy, and these 2 girls. All were Hispanic besides me. We walked in and maybe 30 people were in there. They served until 4:30 or so and I was propositioned maybe a half a dozen times and saw many leave with the paid help in the hour and a half I was there. One of the strangest nights of my life.

I grew up between Pearland and that Pasadena/Sohoo/Deer Park/La Porte area... those areas are pretty cake compared to some of the characters I saw in Fiesta Ballroom that one late night.

Two instances

Was walking with my cousin to get some beer from his Dad's house just north of Long Point near Bingle. The house was out in the country when it was built in the 50s. Halfway between, a drunk guy was whizzing behind the liquor store with his tool in one hand and a gun in the other. We spoke and he appeared harmless. Guess he was just having fun.

Staying with Grandma in the Heights when I was a little kid. Long before regentrification. Their house was built in 1941. Heard the chopper, then two set of footsteps running swiftly against the house and finally the spotlight of the police helicopter shining through the bedroom window. I wanted Mommy bad.

In Houston: 3 AM @ Pink *****cat Caberet on Richmond/Buffalo Speedway back in 1996. Selection of entertainment was scaaaaarrryy. So much so that we talked the manager into getting naked. Took $100, but she did it.

All time: The donkey show in Juarez, circa 1987. Brain was scarred for life with the images I took in that night. If you gotta ask, you don't want to know.

survived my high school years at the M somehow. You know it's thoed if SPM was kicked out of there.

My middle school wasn't better. After I left some kid killed another student with a screwdriver...what happened to good ol' fashioned shootings?

Needless to say, growing up in southeast Htine was interesting.

Did you go to Deady middle? I also did a presentation there. I remember how spanish was the predominate language in the school, Principal, teachers, and of course the students spoke it first and foremost. Felt like I needed a translator just to get to the main auditorium. And despite being dark skinned, I don't know a lick of spanish. So lots of random stuff yelled at me and I couldn't respond. Happened at Milby too.

Obviously their make up is hispanic dominated so it's not really surprising. That side of town is spanish first, signs, everything. Kind of hard for those schools to meet minimum standards of education in English/Lang. arts, let alone Math.

I know a more experienced engineer in my company and she went from Milby to A&M. She went back and gave a talk about staying in school. It went straight in one ear out the other.

"What kind of car you drive?"

rwl: "Honda Accord"

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA

"I drive a Hummer"

"I drive a escalade"

rwl: "Well you can't afford those unless you get a good job and stay in school"

Incidentally, I don't know if Cloverleaf is the same clover that Lil flip represents (Clover G's, if they got clover on they neck we in the same gang).

I just did the whitest thing in the history of the internet and consulted Wikipedia on where Lil Flip was from or if there was info on where the clover in clover G's came from. No info there, sorry.

Cloverland is south of Sunnyside, near Scott and Airport. Zoned high school for that area is Worthing, which is why Flip said he "might buy Worthing".

I used to play baseball for Jones High School, which is in South Park. After practice we would drop off teammates at their houses/apartments. The worst was when we would drop this guy off at "Dead End", which was a apartment complex. It always reminded me of the scene in Training Day when Ethan Hawke goes into Denzel's neighborhood. There were lookouts posted on the roofs and everything. Fortunately my friend had plastic spinning hubcaps on his Volvo, so whenever we came through all the locals would just laugh at us.

Also one time my friend got his car stuck in the mud outside of Jones. We tried to flag down a cop for help because it was getting dark, and he told us that white boys didn't belong in this neighborhood and just stranded us there.

Been to some shady places in Nigeria, Colombia, Argentina, and Venezuela, but I was drunk, young, and stupid.

Grew up in Houston, so I have a good idea of where not to go. However, I did go to a shady apt. near west bellfort to pick up a dancer I had met at the pink *****cat. Sobreity and bright light made that the one and only time I made that mistake. Did get to meet Uncle Billy, Aunt Wanda, and the pet pot belly pig

Based on my travels, Houston has nothing compared to some of the streets of Nigeria and Columbia. Living in Bogota for 3 months was like........... well, I cant really compare it to anything really. It was scary to me at times. Always felt like I was going to wake up holding the newspaper, posing for a Polaroid in the jungle.

Ronnie-
That would be an unfortunate yes on Deady.

And the story on going back to talk to students is sadly true.

I guess this goes for most inner-city school as well but it seems like there's a small percentage of bright, talented kids (pass multiple A.P. tests, score extremely high on SATs, etc) and then...the rest of the student body who seem to drag their feet. There's a reason a lot of school officials are against the top 10% rule. Being in the top 10% of an urban school just means you're not affiliated with a gang and you don't have to report to a probation officer.

Gigi's Caberet off 290 somewhere.

Another time I don't know where we were. It was after we played Rice in football, at Rice. We got lost after we left the stadium. Some of the 'hoods we drove through looked like something out of a movie with the guys standing around a fire in a garbage can, and gangs of guys standing around stop signs/lights, just waiting to 'jack a car load of crackers.

Sunnyside, I used to volunteer for a reading program and would go to the elementary school..the teacher would give me 4 or 5 of the kids and we would go read in a room upstairs. I remember one time one of the kids looking out the window and seeing an older kid wearing a lot of bling and loose clothing walking and the young kid saying "He's a gangsta, don't mess wit dat dude".

I used to work off Holmes Rd near 288..needless to say, our office cleared out before sundown.

Still the shadiest place I have ever been is inside the prison downtown. In high school, we had a "field trip" down there...walking down the halls, all the prisoners walking up to the bars whistling and hollering at us. I tell you, that was the best field trip ever, made me know for sure that I NEVER wanted to go to prison.

I used to work at Holmes and Scott, you're not kidding about getting out of there before sundown. One time this crack-***** came in the front office asking to talk to the President. She was rambling about how he told her he would donate some money to her kid's soccer team. Then said she needed to go to the doctor because she had some sores on her side, it was when she started to raise her shirt that the Pres ran out of the conf. room into my office telling me to give him $50 out of petty cash asap. One of the funniest things I'd ever seen.
