The part about how the station handled Covid-19 is pretty fascinating. For those of you who aren't going to listen, Cumulus wanted to furlough all the employees, including the hosts; however, they were all under contract. It was basically intimated that if they didn't agree to the furlough, then it would be remembered come renegotiation time. The hosts all got together and elected to take a pay cut instead to what they would have made with the furlough just to stay on the air. It's also insane to me how much they were paying people out of their own pocket.

Anyway, the most interesting thing I heard was Dan saying that he hopes they can grow to the point where they get to work with other people. I think he's specifically talking about Ticket folks there, and I definitely get the impression listening that they have no plan to go to the Freak. They may end up there if it doesn't work, but it definitely sounds like they want to make it in podcasting.

Very interesting listen and well worth your time. Maybe today from 1 to 3, ha.

As someone who listened to the Ticket for many years, back to the early days of the Ticket. I even went to the Gold Club after Ranger games to watch Rhyner and Followill do Diamond Talk back from 2000-2002'ish. I have spent the last 8 years working remote and traveling. My listening has diminished, especially since 2020. I did see the Grey Wolf retired, but that was on the news. I decided to turn on the Ticket this week for the first time in a long time. I feel like one of those Japanese Soldiers from WWII that had been hiding out for 40 years in the remote jungles of Guam. What the hell happened?

Thank you for this thread. After several hours of reading, I fear the demise of the little Ticket is upon us. I keep reading that "when the Muser's hang it up..." on these threads. Have they mentioned anything about retirement? As for GenX Davey - I remember his first stint on the Hardline. I have to give it to him, whether you like his on air persona or not that guy has stuck around for years before getting another shot at the Hardline. Between the Orphanage and sitting in during dry dock, he's a lesson in fake it till you make it!

Anyways...I'm glad I found this thread. Thanks for nearly 10 years of updates.

I listened and now I really want to know what Dan and Jake (and the other hosts) were making. Akaash kept saying they were paid extremely low, we're undervalued, etc. but I'm not sure what that means to a comedian who has a top 100 podcast and likely does quite well in the entertainment industry. What's severely underpaid to him, 100k, 150k, 250k, 300k, etc?

He did mention that Jake didn't get a raise when he became a host. Wasn't clear if he was talking about when he actually became a host or when he started getting more speaking time on bad radio. That's insane if Jake didn't get a raise when he actually became a host. That's what he seemed like he was saying, but then Jake mentioned paying $500 per week to people filling in on the show, and there is no way he could do that on a producer salary.

When Jake first moved he did not get a raise, but very quickly after they gave him a host contract. He held out at least once so I think he was "fairly" compensated as much as any other host.

Radio is dying. As the economy continues in the doldrums, advertisers will continue to pull back, further increasing pressure. The Ticket will have a longer runway than most, but it is a matter of time. Top talent will have to make some hard choices.

And podcasting, sure, there is the potential to make big money. A VERY SMALL number do. But there is also the much more likely potential of just barely squeaking by.

The high end of podcasting is really no different than radio other than delivery. You need production, engineering, ad sales, etc. The top shows have a pretty large infrastructure. I am not sure Dan is interested in building and managing the required team.

Yes, lots of work and self-promoting required, which Jake acknowledged was something he wasn't comfortable doing but would have to change.

But that was an insightful conversation that really did seem to clarify that the podcasting/streaming world is their goal vs biding time for the Freak or Fan. Hopefully Akaash didn't screw them up with projections that don't translate and whatever regional homework they did is solid.

My understanding from their podcast is Jake did NOT get a raise when he was promoted, and then when he re-negotiated about a year and a half later, they STILL weren't willing to bump past a producer salary until he just held out. But I don't know what he was making at the end of his tenture

That's right. Mike retires end of 2019, Jake gets promoted to host early 2020, but covid hits and they use that excuse to keep him at a producer salary for over a year. Then in 2021, they still weren't bumping him much until he held out. With how patreon is going so far, Jake is probably doing fine relative to where he was. I would think Dan still has to be taking a hit.

When Dale Hansen retired a few years ago, he said in the latter years of his career that he was making about 40% of his career peak. Seems like local radio is following what hit local tv.

Yeah I would imagine during this transition period they are both taking sort of a hit because who knows how fast Patreon actually pays them, plus it sounds like they are racking up some legal bills.

They also have the stats to monetize their youtube now. I don't think it is amounting to much, but I noticed they have put out a Youtube Short as well, so I think they are definitely trying to set up multiple income streams.

I keep calculating the Patreon in an annualized number, and it looks really strong but I do think they will need to step up the production value/get a third voice (or at least drops) in the near future to keep people on for more than a month. Luckily Patreon doesn't refund people who cancel in less than a month so at a minimum they have the ~$20,000 from this month to make things a little easier.

Seems like a great role for someone like Blake. I imagine D&J could give him a pay raise relative to Cumulus and give him some monetary upside in the whole venture.

You have to figure that their highest subscription base will be what they experience in the first month. And from that, there will be a significant drop within the first three months. So its only down hill from here.

I still think the smart play would have been to stay on the sure path with the ticket. And if that starts to decline in the next few years (as the trend seems to be), then everyone move at once to a new platform where they can try and utilize the group as a whole. The Jake and Dan strategy now seems very short sighted. I know some would counter that with saying long term, radio is dying. But I think by abandoning the Ticket now, they quickly lose that association. This would only work if everyone jumps to a new platform at the same time.

Yeah I don't see a realistic scenario where the Musers jump to a podcast platform with everybody else. The Ticket lasts as long as the Musers stick around and not much longer. I don't think this hypothetical simultaneous abandonment works without the Musers, so what's the difference for D&J in jumping now? They just stay and keep fighting the same battles over and over with Cumulus regarding comp for themselves and the producers/ops/etc ? Seems pretty obvious that they're tired of fighting that battle
