Absolute tease. Saw this near top and thought rain might be coming.

I hate you all.

Haven't seen rain now for two months. Last year topped out around 80 something days. Two of years of this is brutal.
I had to cut down two Japanese Coral Maples. Dead.

My next door neighbor lost a giant Oak in his front yard that partially shaded west side of my house. Now all of my landscape on that side is frying away.

Going to be a total loss over there. I'll have to replace it with cactus or just throw rock down and be done with it.

Yeah without any shade pretty much anything is toast. I've been watering the trees by just turning on the hose half way for about 5 -10 min each on a weekly basis since august started. Also, cut down on my zones and added another day on sprinkler system. On Thursday I just turned the sprinkler system on for 2-3 minutes a zone around 8pm just to cool **** off.

This is a brutal of summer as I can recall going back to late 70's

i guess no relief in sight until end of september?

Currently at 1.55 in of rain here in Coppell since May 21st. No rain since week of 7/16.

So much for the $1k+ I paid for new sod in the front yard.

I'm about to build some shade cloth covers for our west side plants. Not enough water in the world to keep them from literally burning. No clouds no respite.

I had a coke can explode in my car due to the high temps.

I did not realize that was possible.

Big house being built down the street. Last Monday all the landscaping and trees delivered. Some reason landscapers haven't showed up and everything is dead. Likely 10-15k lost.

We've had several summers with no rain like this before, but the temps are obviously higher on average.

I have a semi-major landscape repair job to do in the next two weeks to try and spruce it up so we can list our house for sale. And then watch it not sell.

So, I got that going for me.

Oncor cut our power at 10. Someone called in a dead tree leaning on a power line in the neighborhood. They came out started working on it, power all good as it didn't fall all the way. Then they determined they had to cut power to fully remove tree. FML.

Anything in a can can be boiled. Bottle too.

Had a can of varnish pop in the bed of my truck last week. At least it was in the bed, not the cab.

First, water. But, if you do need dirt you can watch FB. People getting pools will sell it or give it away.

I had some low spots in my yard last year and that is how I got my dirt.

Don't worry. Sometime in September you will then get 4" of rain in like 1 hour. Flood everything and wash the rest away.

This is correct.

Adding dirt can cause other issues and isn't needed. The shrinking soil separation is normal for this weather. If you are using a soaker hose maybe bump up the time a little. But understand that it cannot keep up with the evaporation caused by this heat. The soil will expand back once the summer heat breaks and we get some rain.

There is no way to completely stop the soil from expanding and contracting with the moisture changes it experiences. You do your best to mitigate it, but it is imperfect.

This is probably a dumb question. We have a foundation drip system as one of our sprinkler zones. I run it 30 minutes every day. But how does it not create issues with the perimeter getting the water but underneath the slab not getting water?

I know its hot af every summer but this one feels relentless. Cant remember this many days of 104-105 + temps in any other summer

You are trying to replace the evaporated moisture along the edge where it evaporate the easiest/fastest. The farther you go under the slab the more protected it is and the slower it dries out, though it does dry out.

The typical dripline hose like yours drips at a gallon per hour per hole (some are a half gallon.). So you could bump up that 30 minutes.

The reality is that when the weather sucks this bad, you really cannot win. You are not going to be able to offset the evaporation completely. So you do the best you can until the heat breaks and it rains. You could go broke paying for water for the yard right now and still not get enough.

In my experience, I would not worry too much about it if you are using your drips. This happens every year and if you are not actively neglecting your foundation, it should be okay.

Some lucky people between Forney and Rockwall are getting rain today. Don't think it will drift over my way though.

For sure. I used to think that once you got to 95 or so that it didn't really matter. Hot was hot. But I was wrong. This 105+ every day is another level. AC can barely keep up. It was 101 when we walked outside at 8 tonight. That's insane. Those two 95 degree days a week or so ago really did make a difference. It was actually pleasant going outside at 7AM.

At this point I don't care anymore. I'm watering 4 times (2 times sprinkler/ 2 times spot manual sprinkler) a week and I turned my AC down to 70.

my neighbors are like you and they're hell bent keeping their fricking lawn green...

in contrast, my lawn goes dead/dormant in middle of July due to lack of rain since early june in this particular part of NW DFW... effing HOA send me a letter to replace my dead lawn.

No amount water revives the dead patches of grass...thankfully little by little there are patchy of dead grass scattered throughout the neighborhood where high intensity watering is not done.

HOA, never bother me again since water restriction now remain in place...I hope

I just look at it this way. Couple hundred dollars more in water or new sod, plants, maybe even a mature tree?

I'll spend the extra dollars. The lake levels are pretty full here in north Texas, especially for this time of year.
