Reporting back as promised.
Ordered Time Warner 50mps over their chat Wednesday night. Husband found a $34.99 price on the website (not sure how, he has a knack for things like that) which they honored without question. Our house has always had Verizon DSL or Fios, so we had to pay for installation $39. If the lines are place you can do a self-install.
Original install date was the 16th, but the agent was able to find an opening Saturday morning.
Promised arrival time was between 8 and 9am. Got a call from dispatch at 7:50 that he was on the way, arrived at 8:15. Install took about 2 hours. Hookup was installed in our media closet upstairs without complaint. Guy was friendly enough, and didn't try to sell us anything additional.
One TW feature I like - you are not required to use their equipment. Rather than $10 per month, we bought a referb Arris modem on Amazon for $25. Speed is 53 at the wired connection and 35+ wireless.
Overall, good so far!

Thanks! May consider a move to them for internet. Does not like like their tv technology really compares to Directv or TWC.

I noticed that the cable box fees are quite a bit higher with Frontier than will Verizon - $12 box + $15 DVR fee. So for a DVR and a second box, I was paying $39/month + tax.

I opened a chat session on their website and asked about cablecard cost, the guy first claimed that they don't do them, but when I told them that they are required by law to offer them, he said they are $4.99/month.

Checking around, I found that I could get a Tivo Bolt with one year service and a Tivo Mini for $350, which gives me a 10-month breakeven cost over stick with Verizon's terrible DVR service.

Those *******s did it mothereffing again. Time to start calling Public Utilities Commission.

Exactly at 10pm while streaming HBOgo my **** drops to 1 down 5 up.

Frontier, you're going down just like my internet. Jerk faces

Any updates on Frontier? I have not been thrilled since the switch but don't want to go Directv (don't like to mess with separate Internet) and also don't want to do TWC (had them years back and didn't like quality). Feel stuck because I like the Fios service. We are disappointed most in the function of apps on Apple TV since the transition. Our long term agreement is up and paying high rates so need to lock down a long term option in the next couple weeks.

I noticed AT&T / Directv is offering unlimited data if you go to Directv and have AT&T wireless which I do. I may consider going that route....

In Keller here, (where fios was invented at the Corning Optics plant on HWY 377 near Kroger Ave. Keller was the first US city to get pre-installed residential fiber optics.)

Couldn't watch ESPN on-line (baseball games) then everything died numerous times. Several hours on the phone. I cancelled the TV and got Dishnet over the weekend. My phone died as soon as I hung up on them. More hours on Cell phone with "Bangladesh-Bob." He had to repeat everything at least 3 times since I couldn't understand him.

They are now going to charge me $90/mo for internet and another $40 for phone. Due to the anti-monopoly regulations (thanks democrats) my only alternative is a local DSL shop called 1-Source Communications (terrible service.) But I will be switching in a few weeks. I have to wait until school is out before I have to change my email address. I've heard good things about Charter but it is not available in my neighborhood. Same with Cox/ATT-Uverse/Time Warner/etc.

I don't think I ever saw a company transition done so poorly. I wouldn't have thought it so hard

I have also abandoned the notion of bundling multiple services. That is how they suck you in. I plan on getting a separate ISP and VOIP (Vonage or equivalent.)

For TV, the best option is a satellite service (Dishnet or Direct TV whichever you prefer.) They have terrible internet service though. You'd be better off with cable modems.

For ISP, fios is the best technology (most reliable hardware, highest performance, etc.) but Frontier sucks bigtime. This is the biggest problem today. That writing is on the wall. It is a screwed up company and the problems are not going to go away. DSL is the only close competitor to fiber. I will be taking a step backward in technology. But our government has seen to the fact that I have no other choices.

I'll stop my rant now

That's because you will be able to stream faster on your phone than with their DSL. /snarky comment/

Sorry. Just in that mood.

We are cutting Uverse tv/internet and going with TWC internet with Hulu, Prime, Netflix and OTA.

Mojave - So you are just going to dump Fios altogether and do TWC for your internet? I am leaning towards just doing internet w/ them and hoping that to be a fairly "maintenance free" product vs tv

In a few weeks I will offer Frontier an ultimatum; cut my monthly bill from $130/month for internet and phone to something like $70/month like everyone else, or I will cancel and go with 1-Source DSL (my only alternative.) It is about 25 mbps about the same as my fiber connection.

I suspect (keeping fingers crossed) that once everything settles from the transition that the internet reliability will stabilize and all will be well. No way am I keeping the TV though. Dishnet/Direct TV is sooo much better. If the internet problems persist I will eventually drop it entirely. My main motive for wanting to stay is not having to change my email address.

Either way, I will be going to Vonage/equivalent when I get around to it. Verizon FIOS was charging me $40/month for voip service which is the Verizon equivalent of Vonage. (VOIP = voice over internet protocol) I had it for years without even realizing it.

I was just on the phone with Frontier and wanted to jump out my window. I may just do TWC. Anyone know how their 300 or 200 speed internet compares to Fios 75/75? Comparable? Better? Their 300 is about $25 cheaper than the Fios 75/75.

Ok. I just got off the phone and they have cannot communicate pricing in a clear thought. They just ramble and I said 5Xs I don't want phone and they kept pricing me phone. Its almost unbearable. Directv similar service is only like $60 per month which is pretty good + I know they have good picture.

Haven't had huge issues. Just a few random slow downs on Internet.

Planning to switch TV to direct soon just based on price and features.

Will keep the fios Internet for now, unless thing deteriorate more or the price keeps going up. Alternative would be twc. Trying to get a feel for its quality and might switch to their Internet. Would be cheaper if quality is decent.

So has anybody been told when Frontier is going to force everybody to change their e-mail addresses?

I assume they are not going to carry the "...verizon.net" addresses forever. I've asked. Just dumb responses so far.

I don't know how much longer I can stay with frontier fios Internet. My tv has been normal compressed signal cable. Internet has been on/off. The speeds swing so much that gaming isnt possible, streaming drops and starts... it just flat out doesnt work well. So frustrating

Our upload speeds are actually higher than our download but performance has been ok. Get about 55 download but am paying for 75/75 so trying to decide if I want to drop down or if that just means my 55 will become 30.

My uploads are consistently higher but tests go from 50/40 to 22/60 to 30/15 like right in a row. Wtf

Yesterday I logged on to my Frontier account and found a mystery $295 charge so I called them. A very friendly agent told me to not pay attention to their website; it has lots of known problems. So I asked what my next bill would have on it. After 15-20 minutes of negotiating, she got my internet & phone service "down to" $131/month plus tax. I called my only other choice 1-Source Communications (again, famous for bad service) and said I could have 35 mbps VDSL internet and the same phone service for $81/month plus tax (12 month agreement, 1st two months free). The max I've ever clocked my fios at is 26 mbps. So I'm taking a chance and switching away from Frontier on the first of the month. I hope the service is acceptable but at least I know I'll be saving $50/month.

And BTW, the $295 charge is still on my online acct

Anyone else having connection issues today with Frontier? I have DSL but was told that they have a fios outage in the area, a cable was cut or something. It shouldn't be causing me issues but something is.

Gone from stupid to insane.
Phone hasn't worked all day, again. I've talked to them on the phone and on their chat line troubleshooting. These people are beyond incompetent. I got an email telling me they were charging my CC the mystery $295 charge. I think I've blocked that for the time being.

I have an apt next Friday with the other provider to set up service. Can't wait.

Made the switch to Directv yesterday and really liking it so far (I know just 1 day but like the interface and the picture is actually better than what we had with Fios). Customer service was easy to deal w/ and the installation guy was 100Xs better than the guy who did our Verizon install a few years back. He ran some new lines / drilled some holes to minimize the showing lines in the house and did it for free ("waived" the $50 or whatever fee). We will be switching to Smith Thompson security in 2 weeks and will be able to drop both the way over-priced ADT and our over-priced phone line ($40 per month??). It has taken a bit of time but glad everything is falling into place and soon will ultimately be saving over $100 per month and have equal if not better services on all fronts.

Update:
I've been on the phone with Frontier almost daily. My current problem is they won't/can't release my phone number for a different provider to pick up, which is, as far as I can tell, a violation of federal law.

At any rate, Friday I had another local provider hook up VDSL internet and phone service. They actually installed a temporary phone number along with my current one until all that gets straightened out. So I currently have two Internet services (one Frontier FiOS and one VDSL.) I have measured WiFi rates at least a dozen times on each to compare. The FiOS ranges from 16-24 MBPS. The VDSL is consistently around 34 MBPS. So much for glass being better than copper. Upload is slower but I don't really care about that. The improvement is noticeable with streaming video or animated weather maps, etc.
All this for a monthly bill that is nearly half what Frontier charges. ($78 vs $136 before taxes)
As soon as my number is released I will cancel all Frontier services. It will be a good day.

I still don't know what will happen with my Verizon.net email addresses. They may remain active forever. It still makes my head hurt how people pay Frontier Communications, for Verizon email addresses, that is run from an AOL server. Maybe I just think about it too much though.

Remember that the email addresses transfered to AOL. So I think you can probably keep them. Don't think Frontier has anything to do with them.

That being said, I have had other issues with those addresses since the transfer and I am in the process of getting rid of them by transitioning to Gmail.

My understanding is that the migration to AOL was an agreement with Verizon. How does that work with Verizon out of the loop now? Will Frontier notify AOL when I cancel my services? Will AOL delete my mail acct then? If Verizon didn't go away and I canceled my Verizon service, would they have notified AOL to cancel the address? At what point will AOL want to change all the addresses to AOL instead of Verizon since they wouldn't want to provide free advertising for their competition forever?

Those are all questions I've asked numerous times and gotten nothing but uninformed and contradictory answers. I suspect you are right and all will continue as it is for now. But at this point I am confident that if anything can get screwed up, it will.

I don't have those answers either. My interpretation of the original divesting by Verizon was that the verizon.net email addresses were going to AOL and that it was a separate thing from the Fios going to Frontier. At the time of transition it said you could keep using the verizon.net addresses through aol and I never saw a time limit. I got seperate communications about the two things and they never said anything that made them seem connected.

Admittedly, I was not looking very hard because I was already starting to think about transitioning out of those email addresses, and this seemed like a good reason to force myself to do it.

Has anyone tried to contact AOL with the question? Might be easier to get an answer from them than Frontier.

My only options for internet are OneSource and Frontier. OneSource prices are insanely high; I don't know why anyone would chose them.

So, that leaves me continuing with Frontier. Had Verizon Fios 50/50 and was paying about $48 a month out the door. Now, my "contract" is up with Fios and I need to renew. The only options I have are continuing my 50/50 now for $70 plus tax (about $25 more per month than the previous 24 months) or upgrading to 75/75 for $80 plus tax.

I asked about all of those great prices on their website, such as 150/150 for 2 years for $65, but they told me they were only for new subscribers. I said, I didn't choose to be a subscriber to your services, and I've only paid you 1 time. They said too bad so sad.

No other options. Take it or leave it. No higher ups to talk to on customer service; this is it.

I had to bite the bullet and force myself to realize that I have to pay $300 more per year than I was previously for the same service.

LUCKILY, I'm no longer under a contract, so if I move or OneSource stops charging $75 a month for 25/5 mbps cable internet, I might switch.

I HATE this company.

Helgs,
You might be in my neighborhood. My only other choice was 1scom. I had 1scom from 2006-2010 when I moved to Ft. Worth. I experienced pretty bad service (mostly for TV service.) Since 2010 I was with Verizon.

I was very reluctant to return to 1scom but anything was better than Frontier. Frontier was charging me $136 for phone and 50/50 internet that rarely performed over about 20 mbps. They are charging more money these days but the infrastructure has not changed. The performance is mediocre at best (by current standards) and the same as it was 10 years ago. I bet that is part of the reason Verizon sold it. The writing is on the wall. Frontier is a second rate company picking up the scraps. It will never improve.

1scom is charging me $78/month for internet and phone with a 12 month contract, with the first two months free. The 35 mbps internet by itself is $65/month. (http://www.1scom.com/dsl_cable_internet.aspx)
I'm not here to promote 1scom for obvious reasons. They are basically a mom & pop local outfit with a parent company in Atlanta. When the guy came out to install, all the info I needed (wep key, email authentication methods, etc.) was literally written on the back of an envelope in pen. And much of that was incorrect. But I've done this enough to be able to figure it out. I suspect they are better than they were 6 years ago but I am taking a chance. What I can say is the 35/5 mbps actually does download via their own wireless router at 34 mbps. I compared just now. FiOs = 23.2/40. 1scom VDSL = 33.4/12.4.

I now have Dishnet TV which is awesome (way better than FiOs) and 1scom for internet and phone. So far everything is a huge step up and everything adds up to about $40 less per month. I did call 1scom tech service around 7 am on Memorial Day for a dumb question and a helpful person (in Atlanta) gave me the info I needed. They didn't do that 6 years ago.

If you want the 1scom guy's contact info I can get it for you.
