What is your favorite theater in Dallas?

My vote goes to the LOOK Cinema in Addison. Great theaters, great projectors, great sound, great nachos.

Runner up goes to Alamo Drafthouse, but only because they show older and obscure movies. Last thing I saw there was Ghostbusters, which was awesome.

Word. I saw Star Wars there as a kid in 1977 (and the "remaster" there 20 yrs later).

I'm a fan of the Dallas Angelika, mostly because it's nearby and fairly teeny-bopper-free. I still need to check out the Alamo Drafthouse.

Fork and screen experience at the AMC theater at Grapevine Mills. Great for any movie longer than 2 hours.

Assumiing the movie i want to see is playing everywhere

Inwood for a date with a chick you really get along with.

Alamo for anything not requiring the best in sound and screen.

If a more traditional theater experience is required but not 70 mm or imax, bally view because it is cheap and decent and rarely sells out.

Imax - Webb chapel

I have to disagree. I live nearby and that's my primary theater. The waitstaff is average at best, the food is overpriced Chili's type fare, and the set up stinks as far as distractions (waiters having to walk in front of people).

For me:
Alamo Drafthouse for events and if I want to eat, really wish the Irving location wasn't so far out in the future. I am hopeful the food will be good at the Moviehouse and Eatery in Flower Mound (supposed to open this spring sometime).
Otherwise it is about what movie is showing, times and distance.

Definitely the Alamo.

Look cinema. Great quality theatre experience with the ability to choose seats and avoid waiting in lines for new movies. Saw Interstellar there and loved it. For comedies or other such movies that don't require a large screen/sound system I prefer the couch in my living room.

Wife and I stopped going to Inwood after a few viewings.

Had a mouse, not a rat, run around freaking people out in the downstairs theatre just before the lights went down. People walked out and never returned. Lots of popcorn in the "loveseats" which I would never want to see under a blacklight.

Saw a couple movies upstairs. Good seats and comfy, just sticky seats and floors. Plus the entire place feels humid and damp.

The bar is cool and very chill. I wish we had more places similar to this.

We meet up with our northern friends at Alamodraft House now.

Oh and went to Look one time and was really impressed.

1. Inwood
2. Northpark
3. Alamo

I saw Interstellar at LOOK on the big screen with reclining seats, and I was ready to walk out with all the creaking and groaning from people reclining and un-reclining their seats continuously in the quiet parts. It was crazy distracting.

Reasons not to go to nkrthpark.

Parking sucks during the holidays.

Crowded

No reserved seats

Dealing with the high school kids

Lie Max

All the ****ing retards that use the kiosks ro browse the ****ing movies

Only average screens, food, sound,

30 minutes of commercials before the movie.

Limited movie selection despite having 30 screens

reserved seating is the best idea to come to movie theaters since surround sound

Alamo no question. So glad I live close. LOVE that you can enjoy a movie there where people act right, no phones or talking.

With the success of LOOK, Alamo, and Studio Movie Grill, I'd say lots of people, myself included.

I like Magnolia when I'm wanting to have a few drinks during the movie. You can get buckets of beer, so you don't have to make another trip to the concession stand during the movie.

Magnolia is great! I prefer to go there when I'm in Dallas. The Alamo is a solid choice as well. Northpark is waaaaay overpriced, not worth it at all. Also the food at all of the AMC's/Studio Movie Grill/Movie Taverns are stupid bad. Like just a step above cafeteria food bad. Eat a real meal at Alamo or eat at a nice restaurant around Magnolia.

Also, Magnolia uses real butter on their popcorn.

Random observation after watching this thread for a while... it's interesting how we all mostly judge movie theaters now by the quality of the food, seats, and other "soft" product aspects as opposed to presentation details like sound quality, 35mm vs. 70mm film vs. 4k digital, etc. I assume this is because home theater equipment has gotten so good lately that there's really no reason to go to the theater just for the presentation quality alone. I think extras like full menus w/ waiters, reserved seats, etc, are great, however, and it's really the only way that modern theaters can distinguish themselves from each other now that technical qualities of the presentation are pretty much uniform across locations.

For reference, here's some links with info on the original Northpark Cinema that I referenced in my first reply for those of you who may not have been in the area back then (it was a standalone building not connected to the rest of the mall that sat roughly where Nordstrom is today). I have extremely fond memories of going to movies there as a kid. Saw most of the major 90's films there like Jurassic Park, Apollo 13, Forest Gump, just to name a few. The sound system in that place was truly amazing, and I can still remember sitting down near the front for Jurassic Park and feeling like the wind got knocked out of me from the sound pressure. I haven't really found a theater ever since that comes close in terms of sound quality at least.

Those are cool links. I had no idea that theater even existed.

I think there's some truth to what you're saying about home theaters, but more than that I think it's that most people aren't true cinephiles. The technical aspects mentioned in your links, while impressive, mean almost nothing to most moviegoers in a practical sense. People want good picture and sound, and stadium seating. Most first run theaters (especially around here) have these things, so nothing really sets them apart in that regard.

It's sometimes hard to hear the small nuances in the theatre because many of them simply turn it to 11 and make it deafening.

A great Sunday after church as a kid was lunch at Wyatt's and a movie at Northpark. I can recall specifically seeking Titanic there.

The seats/food/quality of theater are typically correlated with the quality of the projection and sound. There's a reason no one is raving about studio movie grill on here.

Alamo

and then AMC Northpark for the assorted IMAX releases I want to see (super close to home)
