Curious about thoughts on a daily commute on 67.

67 can get a bit nasty at times. I'd recommend getting on waze and just checking what traffic looks like during the normal commute. It's definitely going to be better than coming from Frisco/Mckinney to downtown though ...

I've been looking at buying down there too. I've driven it a few times after work just to see and, for me, its definitely better than driving i-20 or 183 to Ft. Worth. I work in Irving, so it seems like anywhere could take 30 min to an hour depending on when I leave.

We work and live in the area. Highly recommended. The school district is opening a new high school next year as well. I can't comment from experience on the commute but I'd imagine it has to be better than the northside commutes.

I commute from the Midlothian area (near FM 664 and FM 1387) to uptown. I take 35E unless Google Now tells me there's a wreck, in which case I take Cockrell Hill up to 67. It's usually 25-35 minutes for me. It was consistently toward the lower end of that range before they tore up the mixmaster, but now things slow down at about Zang.

It's also going to be highly dependent on where exactly your starting point is. We're east of the Midlothian city limit, and in the 7 miles I travel before hitting 35E, I have 55 mph speed limits and only about 3 lights. So I can easily be on the freeway in 10 minutes. But there are other areas where just getting to 67 or 35E can take some time.

I really appreciate all of the responses. Any more info y'all can pass along regarding the area would be very helpful.

I bought in Midlothian school district and love it. good schools, good people.

I commute to NW of downtown, and it takes me 40-50 min. 40 minutes with "no" traffic and 50 min if "rush hour" traffic but no accidents.

67 won't be fun in rush hour, but what road in Dallas is fun during rush hour.

You folks that live there, are you buying off of Lake Ridge parkway? Do you foresee demographics from just north of you creeping south in near future? I'd like to buy a lot and build a house, but have heard some that worry about buying south of Dallas.

Lake Ridge doesn't reach to Midlothian. The Lake Ridge area is Cedar Hill and Grand Prairie for the most part, and I believe it's all zoned to either Cedar Hill or Mansfield ISD.

Rough areas creeping south is something we thought about before moving here. We ultimately decided that there's an undesirable area closer than ideal for almost any area in the metroplex. We moved from a great neighborhood in Far North Dallas that's zoned to the Richardson schools that everyone raves about. But not too far away there were some pretty rough apartments and places you'd rather not stop at night along Spring Valley. There were more apartments very close to our house and a Wal-Mart going in at Coit and Arapaho. So who knows if the undesirable areas might spread over time and negatively impact the neighborhood.

Now, we're miles farther from any bad areas of Lancaster, Desoto, or wherever than we were from Spring Valley. And most of that distance is undeveloped. So even if it trends that way eventually, it'll likely be a very long time from now.

Any thoughts on preferred elementary school? Also thinking long term regarding high schools. Any residential areas to stay away from due to proximity to the cement plant? I'm not able to find much from Google searches.

There is not much to google about the cement plants because there aren't any issues, as far as I am aware. I believe the EPA does testing on air quality and it's ok everywhere. Living here, no one talks about it and I haven't noticed anything.

Schools: i believe all the MISD schools are good and there isn't a preferred area. You could go to the accountability ratings website for performance, demographics, and general data overload to compare them. I remember researching and liking the long branch elem / walnut grove middle route. I can vouch that long branch elementary is a great elementary school and I have high hopes for midlothian heritage high school, both in terms of having strong academics and being small enough that my kids could participate in sports, maybe even -gasp- more than one sport.

To echo Wrighty, I think all of the schools are good. We had heard really good things about Longbranch in particular, and that's the one our house is zoned to. Greatschools.org is a pretty good resource as you're researching.

There is a new elementary school going in at Bryson and Shiloh, which is the northeast quadrant of the district. I'm not sure when it's supposed to open or how the rezoning will work. But at least the neighborhoods along Shiloh (Shiloh Forest, Shiloh Manor, and Ovilla Parc) will probably be rezoned to the new school once it opens.

I've heard that Vitovsky it's the weakest elementary school. However, being "the worst" in midlothian doesn't really mean it's a "bad" school

Thanks for the responses. Very happy to have opinions as I am quite a distance from the area.

This is info I'm interested in, as well. Husband might be taking a job close to downtown Dallas, and I'll be working part time in Irving. I want to live somewhere safe. No kids, so not worried about school districts for a little while, but Midlothian was an option we were considering. Is this reasonable to accommodate both of our jobs? I don't mind driving a little more if it means a nicer area. I'd love his commute to not be terrible, though.

Princess,
If no kids, why would you want to live so far out? Different strokes for different folks but there are lots of safe places in or near town that would allow you to enjoy the city while you don't have to worry about school districts. Just a thought.

Moved to the Midlothian area a few weeks ago and work downtown. Kids will be at Miller. It takes me 8-10 minutes to get to 35 and roughly 40-45 minutes to commute each way. I'm not sure I could have found a better location as we moved from about 6 hours away.

Thank you for the info. We like the area and I will likely have a similar drive but to uptown. Seems like traffic leaving dallas clears up as soon as you cross the bridge with some minor to moderate slowdowns.
About what time of day do you depart, both ways?
Canyon99
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I leave the house at 7-7:20 and head home anywhere from 4:30 to 5:30. Traffic slows down a bit where 67 and 35 merge; worse past Marsalis so I usually take Zang or Marsalis exits and cross on Jefferson. I usually take 45 to I-20 then 35 home. Sometimes it is Woodall Rogers to Riverfront and then 35 but it is a consistent 45 minutes.
