Do some of y'all just sit around a pleasure yourself to talking crap about Austin?
Austin has changed. Austin does have issues that come with being a big city. Austin also has an amazing economy and has gone from 465,000 people in 1990 to 926,000 to 2016 to over a million today and sits as one of the 12 largest cities in the country.
Keep moving the goalposts and do what you need to do to feel better about yourself.
There is nothing wrong with pointing out that Austin appears to be on the path to being Portland. It doesn't mean we aren't acknowledging that it has grown and changed from a funky little central Texas town to a large metropolis. It is possible to like the city and hate the leadership for what they appear to be doing to it. If crime is growing rapidly, you can acknowledge that and talk about what to do about it, or you can stick your head in the sand and say "at least we aren't as bad as Houston" over and over while ignoring the crime issues that often come with rapid growth and a shrinking police force.
I have stated Austin has issues like every other big city. Don't act like I'm sticking my head in the sand when I admit there are issues….. The police force also has money to make hires. Their budget is bigger than it has ever been.
The homeless issues are significantly better. I don't mind some criticism but when people act like Austin is some lawless hellhole it's annoying.
We own our home just south of Lamar and Rundberg. It's an area that many in Austin would say isn't the nicest or safest. My son plays in the front yard and I feel comfortable letting him ride his bike around the area alone. We are downtown, on the east side, up 183 and around UTs campus after for work/ pleasure/ kids activities.
Going from 400,000 people to over a million in 30 years is wild. Austin has issues to work on but I personally think they have done well considering the rapid and massive growth….
Austin isn't Seattle or Portland or LA…. It's just not
If anyone wants to spend time in austin I would be happy to set a time when we could drive around and chat about the issues the city faces.
