So how are these races looking?

Are the board members that kept the supe, had the guys arrested, tried to censure the other board members, and required masks gonna lose?

I think it'll be close in at least a few of the races. And it's not just getting the current board members out, most everyone else that is running is okay with the super. My hope is that at least 3 of the more sensible candidates win.

Surprised someone didn't form a PAC like in Southlake

I think all of the incumbents are beatable, but there just doesn't seem to be the same energy to oust them

Ah well. We'll see

Question

Most of these board races have more than 2 candidates

Does a plurality win? Or is there a runoff if nobody gets >50%?

After watching the forum, I can't vote for Jill Farris. She had no answers only questions. Linda Avila is conservative and has some very good ideas. I like her calm presence as well.

Not sure I can vote for Keagy either. He didn't seem to have any ideas and Dr Johnson is laser focused on student outcomes.

Zimmerman is a joke and I think I might leave that place blank.

Really disappointed with what RR has to offer in terms of opposition to the incumbents... nutty stuff.

Maybe they're just rough around the edges, not polished politicians

What are ya gonna do, keep the incumbents?

No, the incumbents haven proven themselves to perform poorly.

But this should have been a slam dunk, easy vote FOR new blood... instead, it's a reluctant vote, AGAINST the existing board; as I cross my fingers the new board has as big of an interest in running a good district versus just winning an election/defeating the existing board. Just sad that RR doesn't/can't attract some caring folks, with good ideas, that aren't interested in all the grandstanding and pretending like a character in House of Cards. It's a school board; with a minimal (but important) role to play.

I get it, and I agree. But at some point, it may just be what you don't want -- a referendum on the status quo, in a vacuum.

And a time to "give someone else a chance"

How bad could the challengers be? Other than pissing off a few teachers who get ruffled when boards are tossed out "on political reasons" (see earlier in this thread)

You read what I was going to do. None of it involved voting for incumbents unless you count Dr Johnson as one. I don't since he's been there for like 6 months.

You didn't say what you're going to do

"Not voting for Jill Ferris? Then who? Avila? Vessa?

Not voting for Zimmerman? Is the other person better?

How about the other races? You voting for Weir?

The problem with Dr. Johnson is that he voted for extending the supers contract just because he didn't want to rock the boat. No one in a leadership position should do something like that.

Avila is a good candidate. Better than Farris and Vessa is just the status quo which is a No.

I personally don't like Zimmerman's personality but there isn't another option. Not voting in that race is a vote for the incumbent which is a big NO.

I wouldn't vote for ANY of the incumbents. I think Weir is running for the same spot as Slape. I voted for Slape. She's reasonable and the friends of mine who have met and talked with her like her and think she is sound.

Salinas is also a candidate that I voted for. I've met him and in talking with him, he seems like he would do a better job than who is currently in that seat.

My take; if you look at it as a whole, rather than Place by Place. And consider what you'd like the entire board to look like when finalized. There are already two on the board with conservative values/perspectives.
If you lean that way (I do), and want to maintain a majority conservative board; but are also sick and tired of the polarizing political grandstanding/drama/news headlines/brash and overly self-important personalities; while actually maintaining true diversity, of thought and perspective (not born, immutable identity), on the board. You could hope for a final board with something like:

Weston*
Bone*
Salinas
Slape
Avila
Harrison
Johnson

I think that likely gives you 5 Conservatives, 1 Independent, and 1 Liberal. And I think it would be a board that stays out of the news, drives the correct agenda, and considers all viewpoints respectfully. I'm not sure we need a board that is 7-0 leaning in one direction, and doing so in a very brash/news grabbing manner.

Zimmerman is too farfetched (not even far right), too political, and too brash. He seems more interested in being a polarizing figure and in the public eye, than simply providing his selfless-service to the board/students.

Farris and Keagy seemed to have done no prep work in their Q&A's, didn't share any good ideas, and generally answered with generic "need to fix things, need to look at things, need to try harder". They seem like pawns, put in place by Zimmerman to oust incumbents and then be a controlled vote for him as the puppetmaster.

Here's how I ended up…

Proud and confident on these three:
Salinas
Slape
Avila

Reluctant on these two:
Keagy - I don't think he's a very good candidate but I don't think Johnson can win. And I for sure don't want their opponent to win.
Zimmerman - I didn't want to vote for him but I really don't like Harrison's positions at all. I could have left it blank but I really really do not like Harrison's positions.

My wife and I had this same conversation many other have had this morning on our way to vote. It's a shame given all the problems that the RRISD board has had that the opposition couldn't put together a better slate of candidates but it's one of those times when you vote for the lesser of two evils. I'll never forgive the current board incumbents for voting for the mask mandates so I hope every one of them loses.

Problem is that more than 50% of parents liked the idiotic mask mandates. Hence the reason they continue to vote in bad board members. Makes no sense that people still think the people they are voting in are helping their kids. How stupid are the parents?

Zimmerman got stomped, and the candidates he backed also lost, every single one of them. Maybe the voters decided that being a jackass at school board meetings wasn't the best plan. For the record, I voted against all of the incumbents and Zimmerman's picks where I could.

I think Linda Avila could have won if Jill Farris didn't run. The "five" linking together was a bad strategy.

Yikes! What has happened to Williamson County? If I was raising kids now, I would not have moved to Williamson County and if I was living here already, I would be ponying up the tuition for private school. Is it Travis County or California invaders that changed the dynamics? Knew this day was coming when Beto won the election in 2018 in WILCO. Guess we'll be seeing homeless camps under Round Rock bridges in the not to distant future.

I think you had 5 extreme candidates running against people who really didn't do anything and no one payed attention to them until COVID. Keep in mind, lots of folks in RRISD live in Austin.

We already have a homeless person living right outside of RR and the sheriff says they can't do anything about it….

They weren't extreme. They let the opposition frame them as extreme, though, and the sheep followed the what the libs said.

Abbott barely got more votes (like .5%) than Beto. That's how completely liberal we've become.

That it went red at all is surprising

WillCo has trended blue for several years now. Went Biden in 2020. Also voted for Beto over Cruz in 2018, and Hegar over Carter. Also went GOP in some races

Or what is was in the 80s and 90s, which was basically one of the most conservative counties in Texas

I definitely would say Willco is purple. Where do you think these hundreds of thousands of transplants came from? Not. Wyoming
