I imagine you think this, because you don't know how much section 508 housing is located within spitting distance of Westwood High. That's not something that goes away.
Class of '93 - proud Dad of a '22 grad and a '26 student!

I know that. The apartment complex down the road, and that section of duplexes near Anderson Mill are all section 8.

Still, there isn't 40 percent Hispanic/Black kids at Westwood.

I think you whats missing here is a good nuanced understand on what exatly IQ means, how it changes, what changes it, how its distributed(both ethically and geographically) and how that distribution changes. I think this video might be a good primer.

School preform is an INCREDIBLY complex topic that is effected by several other equally complex factors, such as IQ, culture and personality. So you need to be careful when you don't have a firm grasp on those topics and how they interact.

Advantages of rich/educated parents esp the ones who are self made
1. wisdom and knowledge on how they became successful
2. With money, there is time. They get to spend more time with their kids to create a safe learning environment where they can pass down their wisdom
3. With money, kids get to be involved in educational/developmental activities that will serve them years down the road
4. Role model that kids see daily
5. Small amounts of genetics

Disadvantages of being uneducated/poor
1. No wisdom to pass down to their kids on how to be successful
2. With no money, there is no time. Parents works more, home less often which creates a poor learning environment and whatever time is left, there is no wisdom/experience to pass down
3. With no money, you can rule out many educational/developmental activities
4. Poor Role model that kids see daily
5. Small amount of genetics.

The bottom line is the biggest reason in successful/well developed kids are the parents. Time, money, environment, wisdom!

Teachers, name of the school, what the school looks like, what programs the schools have, how much money they pump into the school have very little to do with how successful kids are.

If you take All of the families from Westwood and Travis HS, had them switch homes/schools within that Same year their scores would be switched. And the scores would be switched for generations. Within a generation, the area around Travis HS would gentrify completely.

I somewhat disagree with the money=time. It is true at the very high levels and at the upper middle class there is SAHM.....
But poor people have a tone of time. They don't have a job. Working people have much less time than none working.
Single working mother with an absentee father obviously has the least amount of time but they are not always poor.

I think you miss the point. Obviously people who don't work have time.

But people working low income hourly jobs, sometimes multiple ones, having to take time off for doctor's appointments, may not be able to afford good childcare, etc., don't have time.

There is a reason why most poor people are poor. They pass this wisdom to their kids eventhough they may have time.

This is a generalization so please don't go there.

When I say time, I mean fruitful/meaningful time. Not time sitting at home watching soap opera.

My wife is a stay at home mom. When she is at home, she works. She reads to them, takes them out, involves them in cooking, make sure they have their work done, get school supplies, take them to activities, etc.

If you are on welfare, you may be home but sleeping/getting your nails done/watching TV doesn't constitute time with the kids.

If anyone is actually interested in the topic, track down the episode of 30 Days where Morgan Spurlock spends 30 days working a minimum wage job is a fascinating watch. So many things that you wouldn't really think about factor in.

Being a parent, my experience is teachers and students as well as class availablility at their school are to blame for all things academic.

My rising senior's AP classes for his high school tenure:

AP Computer Science
AP World History
- SAT October Junior Year
AP Chemistry
AP English
AP Calculus B&C
AP Physics I
AP Physics II
- SAT II (subject tests) May Junior Year
AP English
AP Linear Algebra
AP Micro Economics
AP Multivariable Calculus
AP Organic Chemistry
AP Physics Electromagnetics
AP Physics Mechanics

This list is normal (not exceptional) for his 6A public school. That list is also meaningless without the great teachers and students. They have both I'm guessing from the spawn's AP test scores. More than ten percent of the class is in the same math, physics and chemistry classes, by my guestimation.

That is "the situation". No idea why every one hates on them so much...d8) They output tons of good Ags.
