It's an ongoing discussion about changes at NG. Thread actually started in 2007.

Im glad it got bumped. What a fun thread to read. LOTS of memories and names I've completely forgot. What is fun is how many "facts" that are stated that aren't quite right.
Got to thinking about the many hours spent at the Chicken ( opened in 74 BTW) and dredged up the night that a VERY drunk and very agitated Sparky Hardee ( sp) , then owner of Sparky's over at East Gate, came barreling in to the Chicken raising holy hell. Stated to threaten everyone on sight. Yelling for Donnie to come out and fight, going to personally close down the Chicken.....what a show.
Donnie and his BIG bouncer threw Sparky out on his ass into the street.
Memories..ahh sweet memories...

It is amazing to see how much things have changed in even a few years. I don't remember the groove and it isn't here now.

Or else it is and I don't ever see it.

Yeah, it's an on-going thread, trying to fill in loose spots. I recently confirmed with a picture that Antonio's was vacant in '94, but by '95 or so there was "Lacey's & Perfect Tan 3" in the spot. When did Antonio's open, anyway?

Graduated in '90...Cowhop was great cheap eating...loved the place. Not alot of choices back in the day but from the Cowhop off to the Chicken you'd go. Man..great memories!!

I forgot about the Flying Tomato. A bunch of us ate there one time. We all got really sick. Not long after that it closed. Don Ganter opened the Chicken right after Brazos County became wet. He was the first to serve beer in town. I think Chicken Oil was opened before the Chicken. Freddie is still making his famous burgers there. He is a great guy. The Chicken would not be the Chicken without him!

I believe it was a bar called Farkleberry's when it opened soon after Brazos County became wet in about 1974.

Where was the first DQ in CS? Present location?

Spyderman, yes, that was the original location, I think. For years there was nothing else along that stretch of Texas Ave until Pelican's Wharf (now a nail salon) at the corner of SW Parkway and Texas. I can't remember if Fort Shiloh Steakhouse was there at that time--mid '70s.

OK, did some rooting around the microfilms--it was Pizza Hut (not Inn) on Northgate, and both co-existed on University for several years.

Mr. Gatti's was near IHOP for a long time, too.

techno-ag, that Gatti's served beer. It was more geared to adults and students. No game room that I remember.

I recollect pinball and maybe a couple video games. But, my memory may be faulty. I agree it was geared toward Aggies and was not like GattiTown.

Mr. Gatti's was the original concept; great pizza, and live entertainment on the weekends. My younger sister tells a story about going there on dates with her boyfriend and the singer, a guy with a weird hairstyle, would come a sit with them. If you don't recognize the description, it was Lyle Lovett.

Mr. Gatti's in College Station doesn't even trace to the Gattitown lineage, does it? I thought it was the Mr. Gatti's at Villa Maria and Texas Avenue (later China Garden) moved up Briarcrest (Gattiland), which moved to the H-E-B Pantry space (Gattitown) in College Station, which then went out of business.

I was in the restaurant business in the late 70s, early 80s and I think Gattiland was a reboot of Mr. Gatti's. I seem to recall the original was in Austin, and there was a nasty divorce where the wife and son took over the business and eventually changed the concept.

I had a professor one time tell me that people threw food at Lyle at one of his shows at Gatti's cause he wasn't very goo.

Yes the Mr. Gatti's in College Station (and also the one in Bryan) had video games.

Mr. Gatti's pizza still existed well past the time they closed the normal stores in CS. It renamed to Gatti's Pizza a few years ago, but...

Capn-Mac! I confirmed that there was indeed a place called "Aggie Den" at 307 University Drive circa 1971 (it was listed under "Restaurants", so it probably served food of some sort). At 333 University, upstairs of Loupot's, there was the Adult Library Club, which was shut down buy the DA.

Makes sense; in '71 drinking age was still 21 (changed in '74, IIRC).

The U Archives have a pretty cool "through the ages" map feature that overlays aerial views through history.

Watching NG is fascinating as it develops.

[q]OK- Yes Fitz's used to be Flying Tomato- they even had a hot air balloon that dropped frisbee's and stuff.[/q]

So that's where this came from? Seriously, I've had this for years!

It may not necessarily have come from College Station, though given the two brands.

I found an old picture of Northgate (early 1990s) where the Fitzwilly's building was painted pink and light blue. What was in it at that point?

That was my guess, yes. I can't imagine Flying Tomato having such a color scheme.

No link, it was in an actual picture in an early 1990s Northgate redevelopment plan (some early sketches for what would be the Promenade--pretty wild stuff). Where Mad Hatters and Bar 317 are now (well, Bar 317 was at least) was a place called "The Bullseye".

Mr. Gatti's did have an arcade. Nothing big though. A few pinball machines and PAC-man.

According to my resources, in December 1996, there was a Baskin Robbins in Northgate. Where was it? I'm thinking the current location of Subway.
