I was at the bird and looking at the brick ground this evening while playing pool and was wondering what was here before the bird? PS The bird is getting another bar in the very back, pulled out two pool tables for it and per the guy working the front bar, the AC is finally getting fixed

There have been several different businesses in that location.

This past weekend was Dudd's 30th and they had a slideshow that included a picture of Dudd's from the outside before the Chicken was there. It was some sort of restaurant but I forgot what.

Loupot's Book Store in the late 50s and for several years thereafter.

I seem to recall someone saying it was called the "Aggie Den" before it was the Dixie Chicken.

The earliest I remember is when it was Farkleberry's, but that was after the county went from wet to dry in the early '70s.

sorry..... too "young" for this one. Hubby says he remembers a grocery store somewhere in the area as that is where he shopped when he lived in those northside dorms...

First time I went to the Chicken was the fall of 1979 - I was 18, and they had not expanded into the larger area where the big bar and food area are now. It was just a long, skinny, hot little place with the front and back doors open for ventilation. Cold beer and good pool, though.

I believe the Chicken opened in '76 but could be off by a year. Before it was there the building was the Aggie Den and the walls were covered with nudy magizines. Don Ganter bought it and put old saddles and head mounts everywhere, served long neck bottles out of water troughs and played country music and the rest as they say is history.

Not sure what it was before the Aggie Den.

The Alamo Beer Garden was in the building where Fitzwilly's is now.

I think you're off. Dudd's opened in '77 (hence the 30th birthday party) and the pic they had showed outside of Dudd's with no Chicken.

It was the "Aggie Den" before it became the Chicken.

The Aggie Den had wall to wall pool tables, bought and sold pornographic magazines and had a couple of peep show kiosks. Behind the check out register it had the infamous poster taken during a Vietnam USO show of Ann Margaret ala Britney Spears.

It was a true den of depravity. You must remember the only girls in College Station were Bryan townies.

Bryan townies - were they "brownies"?

I used to work at the chicken, it opened in 1976 and part of it used to be a mexican restaurant. if you look on the side that has the snake cage there is a portion of the wall that is not covered up with wood and it is a painting that was on the wall when it was a mexican restaurant, don liked it so he put the wood around it.

I don't know when the Chicken opened but I do know I bought my first beer at the Chicken on my 18th birthday in August of 1975.

How was it open before '77 when Duddley's opened in '77 and the Chicken wasn't there yet?

If I remember correctly, Dudleys was Dudleys Draw then it closed and came back as Dudleys, or vice versa. The Chicken was for Lone Star beer and Dudleys Draw served only Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. Dudleys had two shuffleboards on the right and two foosball tables on the left when you walked in with 3 pool tables in the back. Hey, cut me some slack I just turned 50!!

Ok, I pulled out my 75 Aggieland and there is an advertisement for the Dixie Chicken on page 669 that says:

Dixie Chicken
*hangdown
*cheese
*ice cold beer
*sound system
*progressive country music & rock

Potbelly's and Starbucks are where University Bookstore used to be. Charlie's Grocery was on the other block close to the Chicken.

The Alamo was an apartment building first. It was owned by my former land-lady.

Duddley's is still Duddley's Draw.

Somebody remind me what used to be where The Corner Bar is now. I've hit a mental block. I know that when I went to school here, V Bar was Quizno's, Hookah was Holick's, Shotzi's was Double Daves, and Midnight Rodeo was Shadow Canyon. But other than that, I really can't remember what all the current bars used to be.

I was not there before 1977...hubby graduated in May of '76 and it was a sleazy place at that time.

In July of '77 we were back for a Saturday afternoon wedding and walked from the old Baptist church to the NEW Dixie Chicken to visit with all the friends.

I thought the Chicken opened in'74, it was there in '74. The grocery store was down the sidewalk toward Loupot's. However, the Chicken was not as wide as it is now. There was an alley between the Chicken and the building next to it that was full of beer bottle caps. Haven't been to NorthGate in a long time.

Gatsbys used to be northgate dry cleaners
V Bar was Quiznos
Groove used to be the bike shop (or that may be where the pizza place is now)
Corner used to be the photo store
O'bannons and Paddock Lane used to be Hole in the Wall

fitzs was an apartment building. my uncle, class of 75, and some family friends used to live there.

he said it was god awful. roaches and rats and the like, but they also said it was fun.

a friend had his bachelor party last fall and his dad came to town for dinner. he was one of the former occupants, so when we ate at fitzs he had some cool stories.
