Was it? For some reason I thought NY Sub was Texadelphia... I could be wrong.
I think that's what it was called, there used to a place there that had good chicken strips and Philadelphia cheese steak sandwiches.

Texaldelphia became Logan's.

I don't think there was anything in the NY sub building.

Fitzwillys was also a Flying Tomato and then Two Pesos...the latter is where the paintings on the front came from.

Did anyone else see that Eggroll House is for sale?

OK- Yes Fitz's used to be Flying Tomato- they even had a hot air balloon that dropped frisbee's and stuff.

The Chicken opened in 1976. before that I think it used to be a pharmacy/ drugstore or something

The Corner was Campus photo

Vee bar was Quiznos, but a long time ago it was Condom Station..a sex novelty shop.

The Groove used to be Marooned Records

Logan's was Texadelphia and that was a new building built specifically for that restaurant...back then the parking sucked in NG and thus the failure of the restaurant.

O'bannon's was Hole in the Wall

Paddock Lane was the back part of Hole

Before Hole in the Wall it was Ozone

The tattoo place used to be the Cue and/ Marine recruiting place

315 was Coup D'villes- they served the flaming frogs ass- a shot that was 99% everclear

Madhatters was Big Paulies,an italian restaurant , for a short time, before that it was the Cow Hop.

That's all I can think of now.

Cowhop was where madhatters is. The chicken opened in 74 by Don Anz and Don Ganter. Don Ganter purchased Don Anz's position later on.

Donnie Anz, a former partner of Ganter who helped him open the Dixie Chicken in 1974 and the Chicken Oil Co. in 1976, reflected on his old friend Tuesday.

Charlies Grocery was a mom and pop store that had the best chocolate milk ever made.

Freebird's was there in 1990

Cowhop was there as recently as '98 or '99.

Cowhop-->Roadhouse-->Cowhop-->Big Paulie's-->Mad Hatter's

A large part of Cowhop closing down for good was when TABC actually started enforcing laws on Northgate. Having a 90% minor clientele didn't help.

Fitzwilly's was the old Alamo Apartments until 1979. My great grandmother managed the apartments for 44 years until they decided to shut them down to make way for a "saloon". (my grandmother's words) When we were kids we would come to town for the games and stay with her. She had no central heat/air so when it was hot we slept with the windows open. We got quite an education from the Chicken being next door.

Down the street and around the corner in the Skaggs Alpha Beta shopping center was the Claim Jumper. Remember that? I can't remember if it was in the Crazy Cajun building or someplace that no longer exists.

Cowhop moved off NG, moved back, and then closed for good. I used to go there all the time in the late 90s, and am still not happy it closed.

It's old location is where the Wells Fargo now is. And why do we need so many banks around town??? Good grief.

some more of what I remember....

Obannon's > Hole In The Wall > Ozone > Vertigo (going back to '95)

315 > Coupe De Ville's (which had a door in the middle that opened to Cow Hop so you go move between bars without going outside)

One of the places near the Sushi joint was once Disc-go-round. This was in the same time period as Marooned Records being across the street.

There was a thrift/consignment/skate shop above the Camera Shop before it became Corner Bar.

Logans was Texadelphia, but it didn't last long.

Groove was next to Holick's. I think it's Foundation Room now.

There was a barbershop near where Zapatos Cantina is (I think they took over the building), close to the Northgate Cinema. I remember it was always there, and then one day, there was a sign on the door that said something along the lines that the guy retired. This was the early 2000s I think.

Bill's Style Shop. I got my hair cut there.

country and aggieangst are correct - The Aggie Den. Pool hall and all things that used to give pool halls a bad reputation. The Aggie Den relocated there from its former location next to Gibsons at Redmond Terrace on Texas Ave., then Highway 6.

An older gent named Bert owned/ran the place. A younger guy who we called Fish Face was somewhat like the assistant manager while it was at Redmond Terrace. For a time, a guy named "Red" worked there at Northgate.

I NEVER spent any time there! Not at either location. Okay, I shot a lot of pool as a young man.

I just realized I have become an old-timer!?! Nooooo!

I have no idea what was in the Aggie Den Northgate location prior to the Aggie Den. I was too young to look at the magazines - they kept them upstairs I think. I just loved to shoot pool!

The Dixie Chicken opened in 1974. I know, cause I was one of the first 4 customers. Before that it was the Aggie Den. The Aggie Den was a pool hall. The owner would buy old Playboys for 0.25 if it had the foldout and 0.05 if it didn't then sell them for a dollar. In the back were several old coin operated porn machines. I think the Aggie Den was around for about 6 years, so that takes it back to 1968 - 69. Don't know what was there then.

The original Dixie Chicken and Aggie Den only occupied the thin strip of building next to bottle cap alley. Next door was a Hobby Shop for several years, where you bought the plastic models to put together. When they closed, The Chicken expanded into that area, probably 78 -79 time frame. Next door to that was an old style bar and grill, mostly catered to non-students and next door to that was an old grocery store. That was what was there from 72 - 76.
As you get older your short term memory goes to hell and your long term memory gets sharper, for awhile at least. Can't remember what I had for breakfast this morning, but my first beer at The Dixie Chicken in 1974 was a Schlitz Malt Liquor.

I don't remember the Turtle being in the same building...

Flying Tomato -> Two Pesos -> Fitz's

Couple of questions of my own, again...

1. When did Deluxe Diner open and close?

2. What did the gas station at Boyett replace?

3. What was in the two story building before "The Library"? Rother's?
TexasRebel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Deluxe closed in '09

The gas station was a hayfield.

There's a pile of bricks near Boyett and University that suggest something was there before, unless it's meant to LOOK that way. Seems an awful lot of work to fake a building there.

I'm pretty Deluxe Diner closed before 2009. The sign was still there, but I swear it closed around 2007. Besides, there's other evidence it closed before 2007 , possibly around 2005-2006.

I started grad school in Jan 2008, and ate lunch there with my mom a time or two just before it closed. I thought it survived the year, then temporarily moved to another location before calling it quits.

The Deluxe Diner was just a hamburger joint back in the 70's, affectionately known as the "**** Hut" by the students in the dorms nearby, because of the women that worked there. Don't have a good feel of when it was remodeled into the Deluxe Diner.

It's Basil Whippet's now, it was B Mo's for a short while, before that it was the Library, and before that it was Crooked Path.

I thought it was The Chicken, Farkleberry's and Dudley's from L to R in a row. Farkleberry's closed down and The Chicken expended.

I went to high school with Kesley Blomberg in the late 60's, founder of Kesami's sandwich shop at north gate. Also, Bill Patch had a restaurant there called "Back Stage". Great teriyaki ribeye! Bill also had Fish Richards on Wellborn and later, next door, an outdoor pub, which eventually morphed into Astraptes?

WAY back, there was the Yamaha shop where....maybe the dry bean is. The old gray fox.....Fisher owned it, moved over behind the Campus theatre, and then eventually over off Walton St.

Also, a record shop, but I have forgotten the name of it. Want to say Tower but I know that has got to be wrong. It was next to the grocery store?

Kesamis was right next to the stairs that went up to the Sun Theatre. Ahem.

Miranda's was the bar next to the Chicken and then became part of the Chicken. Had a snake in a terrarium. The Vaughans played there several times.

Cow hop was up there.

There was a German Restaurant up there for a while.

Andre's Bicycle shop was also up there.

OK, that's about all I can remember.
