"Keep the sprinklers OFF for a while!"

Please shout this from the rooftops for the water pigs of Castlegate to hear. This morning on my walk at least 5 houses had their sprinklers running including the house that waters the street more than the yard. So frustrating.

Same in my neighborhood…at least 50% of the homes had run their sprinklers early this morning…the yards are soaked.

I wonder which subdivision has the porkiest of the water pigs here? Thinking Pebble Creek has to be near the top.

Several years ago I had some graduate students in the Water Management and Hydrologic Science program do some research on neighborhood water use. Prior to that, Dr. Richard White with Soil & Crop Science did some research and found that some residential lots applied a foot or more of irrigation water to their landscapes in a month! The WMHS students created water budgets based on estimates of irrigated area and climate conditions. I then communicated with customers who were over-budget. The best we can do is look back at the previous year so the education isn't as timely as it could be, but we found that customers who took simple steps to improve irrigation efficiency stayed within their budget post-intervention. That research was done several years ago so it would be worthwhile to update it.

I have seedlings coming up for more than just my ryegrass, so I may take advantage of the dry day, mow high and fertilize, and wait for the next round.

I want to give those little roots time to establish before I mow shorter and put out pre-emerge.
