The Macy's Deception: How City Officials Lied to Justify a $7.5 Million Mistake

The City Manager and Staff Misled the Council to Believe They Were Voting to "Save" the Mall

Key Evidence: Mayor Karl Mooney's Statement on WTAW (October 18, 2022)
Mayor Karl Mooney publicly justified the Macy's purchase by claiming it was necessary to protect the mall from an "incompatible use."

It's really the lying, the real estate dealing through a shady third party, and the subsequent cover-up that's the issue here.

Before all this was known you had people championing the idea that it should've been self-storage and how Mooney was wrong for even daring to prevent that.

Whoever gets the 10 minute presentation, include a PowerPoint presentation that includes these facts and others. You need to leave the council members w a visual. I know for a fact that the City Manger and his staff only tell the Mayor and Council members what they want them to know to further advance their agenda.

Another community group fought COCS and hit back w speakers at every council meeting for a year and a half. The speakers were organized and given topics so the same thing wasn't stated over and over again. That group didn't start catching the Council's eyes until they presented the facts (that directly disputed what the staff was presenting to the Council members) through PowerPoint presentations.

Also, unless they change the speakers protocol within the past year, it used to be that 5 (not 10) people could assign their time for a 10 minute speaker.

"With the city's investment there, whether that's a building or a greenspace, I think that you can steer development the way that you want it to, right. Whatever was going to go there, I think that we are a player now in making sure that area looks the way we want it to look in 20 to 50 years."
A green space? What they are going to raze Macy's and the parking lot now?

I will not vote for this man due to this and his vote for the high rises in Northgate. It's either questionable judgement or complicit behavior.

Within a properties existing zoning, the city officials should have no input into "steering development the way they want" of private property.

The city is a "player" now only due to the city manager and the council at that time being inept.

A little over-reach on local government?

I think it's important to remember that Councilman Wright works a full week every week and also gives a tremendous amount of time to our city in the spirit of a true volunteer. We don't agree on everything and we don't have to, but we do agree that we live in a great city.

I'm violating my own policy of not commenting on threads where colleagues are criticized because I think you guys are being pretty rough on here.

My research may never be done on Macys completely but I've learned a lot and next week I'll know more and may make an update. For now I can say with certitude- bad information and a lack of information plagued council's decision to buy it.

I've learned a lot I might've never known but for Texags and some of the people on it. It's truly a new media world. I suppose it's too much to ask to focus on the facts and pare down the attacks, but I'm asking anyway.

This thread has been mostly facts. The few opinions offered have been taken care of by staff.

Your fellow councilman gave his opinion, albeit one most on here disagree with. He wants to control an area of town. He thinks it was a good idea to buy the old Macy's. I think those are terrible opinions. That is a fact.

The people being paid to determine if that information was good/sufficient failed the city.

And, I think based on the timing of the emails, withheld some information that might've pushed council the other way.

FYI for those planning to speak about Macys at this weeks meeting...if you haven't taken a look at the agenda yet, they are getting the Feasibility Study reports back on the Rec Center and Conference Center on the workshop agenda.

Some of yall may want to stick around for that!

It's about time that people who couldn't survive in the private sector, stay the hell out of it. I for one am tired of watching politicos with zero real world experience swinging and missing with my tax dollars.

So- Taste of Aggieland is today and I am supposed to be there representing us. How bad do you need me to make your 5? If it's an absolute must I'll see if my wife can go without me, if I am not "needed" at this one I'll be at the next one for sure. As a non "resident" I don't think I can speak but I could be there to show moral support for "the cause" which I believe is stopping "leadership" from playing Russian roulette with our tax dollars.

It's ridiculous that people in the ETJ can't speak at a council meeting, but the city can control what happens in the ETJ to some extent.

Ask the residents of Wellborn how that worked out for them.
