We're living in a golden era for Texas barbecue. The quality of meat and sides across the state is as good as it's ever been. Cover versions of Texas 'cue are popping up nationwide, and places are being celebrated for their mastery of the Lone Star style. The awards and honors? There are so many to count.

Sorry Memphis, K.C. and the Carolinas

Was there a BCS one listed? The closest I saw in the article you linked is maybe Spring?

Having tried most of the local, I can't imagine anything in Brazos Valley making the list.

Need to check with Daniel Vaughn, the BBQ guy who writes for Texas Monthly. He's mentioned a few here.

Here's a 95 page thread on his most recent ranking. I think we're due for another top 50 next year.

Memphis sucks, KC is okay, haven't tried Carolina.

Payne's in Memphis (pulled pork their speciality) was one of the top 5 BBQ places I've eaten at in my life. Charlie Vergos, the "dry rib" place is savagely overrated.

LOL I try to be transparent. However, I stand by the comment. I feel our local BBQ is poor in the area.

Truth BBQ in Brenham was great and would love to have it locally, the Pit Room down in Houston has been very good... Enjoyed Terry Blacks, etc...

But Coopers was probably the most disappointing experience I have had outside of someone cooking brisket/ribs in a crock pot and calling it BBQ. I tried Fargos but felt they were similar to Coopers.

1775 BBQ was probably the best I have had in the area, however it just didn't quite scratch the itch that I have had from alternative places in Texas.

Lots of our local BBQ hides in plain sight. The Station is a good example. What's the Deal is very good. Lamar and Nicky's…a soul food joint that has good BBQ. It's here. But takes a bit of work to zero in on it at times.

I'll have to be more diligent and try the places you listed.

L&Js in Brenham is better than Truth... But that is the point, good BBQ is subjective.

BBQ is like politics. Everyone has a point of view.
Many of these lists are indirect advertisements. Think of "Best in West Texas" or "Best in the MetroPlex." List goes on and on.

What's The Deal and 1775 are to me the two best in the area. As mentioned previously, Coopers to me was average at best. LJ's in Brenham is very good.

I hope What's the Deal makes it with their new location out Hwy 21 East. That's a long way for a lot of people to go and also to think about. They need to set their food truck up near campus.

Another good one is Sho Nuff Smokehouse BBQ - they are out on Tabor Road on Saturdays.
