Imo on the local level absolutely higher property taxes and higher insurance rates are affecting spending.

Went to Mr.G's pizzeria after church. Then went to Billy's Bar & grille for root beer floats after.

My home insurance renewal went up 37% and we've really cut back on our eating out.

We don't eat out much just due to calories and my awesome wife has time and skill to make great home food. We got our new Husky, Turbo, recently and have been trying to socialize him on the weekends with dog friendly restaurants so he doesn't end up growling at kids like our other dog who is an 11 y/o rescue we got off the streets about 9 years ago.

The problem is many restaurants are just empty. We have been to several both local and in Katy (where my dad lives) and there is just nobody eating out on the weekends. It is very odd and concerning.

Anyway we will continue to do what we can to support local eateries, but it is rough for them lately.

I think some things are just getting out of hand, which will cause me to cut back. It was $41 for Shipleys today for 5 people. It's not their fault, everything is going up. It just isn't worth it anymore. And I'm terrible at cooking but something's gotta give.

I didn't even know Fire and Ice was still open. Been buying from them and the previous owner when it was Ice is Nice since it was at the original location on 29th by Double Dave's.
New owners are classmates of mine. They are located at Hwy 21 and Tabor Road in a gas station/quick stop. They are on FaceBook too and do special events.

Thats crazy because I would imagine your insurance was 3-4000. Which means a 12-1600 dollar jump in just insurance and probably the tax appraisal is not far behind

I like Mr G's more than RX Pizza personally ^^

Sadly my mother doesn't so I rarely get to go there.

Correct - my current policy is $2810/year with a $500 deductible for both other peril and wind/hail. Jumped to $3856/year for the renewal.

Sadly, it still looks to be in my best interests for just paying and keeping it given they aren't underwriting the $500 policy anymore. And jumping to $1000 deductible only gets me a $300/year discount off the $3856.

That's your experience. We've tried to go too many times when they should have been open and they weren't over the last few years that we've mostly stopped trying.

I won't head over there now unless I've checked Facebook. Lots of other folks in the meals and deals group have had the same experience I have.
I agree with you! They don't have the 'full menu' any more - probably since the Pandemic. And 4 years out - I doubt they will get back to it. My friend misses the kitchen sink omlette

Took some friends to Frida's tonight as a treat. Absolutely love the place, staff are so sweet and friendly and the drinks and food were the bomb. Might watch the Brazil-Mexico match there.

Def a "local" place looking at the crowd, and that's a good thing.

How much of this is inflation, and how much of it is corporations taking advantage of Covid price increases to take in record profits?

Based on the number of restaurants, both local and national chains, going out of business I don't think it's corporate greed.

I'm not specifically talking about restaurants, just the economy as a whole leading people to eat out less. Several industries (o&g, insurance, grocery chains to name a few) are making a killing right now.

I go to Shiraz Shish Kabob once or twice a month.

Frida's is my new favorite mexican food place.

I used to go out several times a week but we throttled back during Covid and just kept the lifestyle change.

In that strip center at Brothers and Longmire behind Walmart.

They make their own baked goods and they are really good. Best cinnamon rolls I've ever had. My wife meets her girlfriends there for coffee and a croissant sandwich some weekend mornings.
Can you talk about these girlfriends of your wife ?

Jason's Deli is Aggie owned. Joe Tortorice Jr., the founder, was in the Corps with my uncle, Class of '70. It is named for his oldest son, Jay, who was at A&M while I was there. I consider it local.

Using that logic, Freebirds, Double Dave's and Layne's are local as well. (Which I consider them to be).

As is Grub Burger, despite a bazillion locations now.

Other local places I'll continue to support:
The Republic
Ronin
Kanji
Jesse's
Every gas station taqueria in town.

We used to come to town at least twice a year during the winter or summer when the campus wasn't busy. We'd stay at Calvary Court, the George, the Stella or even the Hilton sometimes. Visit all our old haunts, have a beer at the Chicken, buy a few T-shirts and just make a weekend out of it.

But hotel prices soared after the pandemic and we stopped visiting.

A small dent in the economy, for sure, but I'm guessing there are other folks like us.
