New Car Dealers "fees"

Anyone else fed up with negotiating your purchase then dealer adds on ~$2,000 for lost/ tracking system, dent repair coverage, etc? And when you tell them you don't want that they tell you they can't sell car without it? It's a rip off so they can advertise cars at a low price but then add back the $2,000 at the end of the deal. It's a shady practice in my opinion. The last two cars I've bought in the $20,000 range did that to me. I nearly walked but really wanted car and it was good deal even after the add on. But the way they go about it is shady imo. Any body get them to take that fee off?

What kind of car is it? Depends. Certain makes have all the power right now and can get away with charging whatever (for instance Toyota) Other makes like Buick will offer way more concessions and are more likely to deal.

That said, if you can wait car prices are forecasted to come down some.

Does Allen Honda still do this?
They tried to add $8k to a car my sister wanted to buy for reconditioning and stupid add ons. But they were SUPER nice about it.

She went to Houston

Yep. They need the sell more than you need the car in most cases

I realize I may not represent the average experience but I bought my last car from Carmax and will commit myself to a life of riding a donkey before I ever buy another car from them.

As of a few months ago, Allen Honda was still making you pay for add-ons. They lost our business on 2 vehicles in the last year. We went to Houston for one and Grapevine for the other.

Am working with a B-CS Chevy dealer, on an order vehicle (Colorado). Built the vehicle, agreed on the price, sales guy went to "get it approved", came back with a sales order with a $3995 "customer package" added.
Nope, do not want any of it, GPS included. Weak attempt to convince me of the benefits, then I suppose he realized I was serious. Another trip to talk to manager(?), returned to say "okay, it's removed".
The GPS add was the hardest push, sales guy said "our insurance requires it, and you will benefit". My reply was " this is an order vehicle, how long do you intend to have my vehicle on your lot?"

This is what I like about Tesla's sales model. You can find out your out the door price in like 2 minutes and go from start to finish in like 10 minutes just with their app and a credit card.

Plus you never have to deal with any slimy car salesman.

I bought a 2023 Kia Carnival EX at the end of June from Durango Motors Kia in, you guessed it Durango, CO because of the add-on shenanigans being played by dealers all over the country. Carnivals are in short supply and dealer markups or add-ons are the norm. No dealership in the state of Texas would sell me one at MSRP if it was already on the lot.

For whatever reason Kia dealerships in CO are selling at MSRP for the most part. However, I actually got $1400 off MSRP from Durango. The dealership charged me a $399 doc fee and Texas TTL. Shipping cost me $1700 and I got it in 24 hours. Out the door price to me before shipping was $42,865 on a $40,520 MSRP vehicle. For a Kia Carnival that is really good.

It took me almost 3 months to go from the initial stage of searching for a vehicle to receiving it but I didn't pay all those up-charges. So I'd recommend looking out of BCS and quite possibly out of state because even with shipping you are saving thousands of dollars. None of this was because of my great negotiating skill or whatever. Just many hours of research and swooping in on a vehicle that had just been delivered. In fact a few days earlier I had a deal on a 2024 Carnival SX in Florence, KY @ MSRP being delivered that same day but after putting my deposit down and starting the process I found out they had already sold it a few days earlier to another person.

Good luck but you don't have to accept dealer add-ons or markups.

This is the way. Get up, walk out, mean it. Don't dawdle or talk to them if they follow you.

They count on you getting emotionally attached to the new car and bending to your own pressure to buy it. You have to go in knowing your max and be willing to walk at any point. If you're not then just sign the deal they want you to sign and be happy with your new car. For them it's business, you have to be the same way or you're going to lose.

Highly annoying. I bought a VW in B/CS recently. Had my price and then they tried to up charge this and that and whatever else for blah blah blah. The guy realized I wasn't having it finally and I wrote the check for the original amount.

We have been loyal Allen Honda customers for 20-plus years.

Was in the market for a new vehicle and tried to stay loyal and local, but they are still adding the ridiculous "Market Adjustment" to the price in addition to the add-ons and the price online is nowhere near what you actually get.

Went to John Eagle Honda in Houston and it was one of the easiest buying processes we have had.

Felt like I was cheating on Allen, but fed up with all of their add-on and market adjustment BS.

Irritated the **** out of me when I bought my car last year, on top of the other fees because cars were so hard to come by. If I never have to buy another vehicle in my life it won't be soon enough.

And to top it all off, everything on the car is in my name, but yet they still put my husbands name and phone number on some of the stuff because he talked to them. *******s.

I bought a Jeep in Pensacola, FL because of Lithia's crap like this

But for all us townies that give them the finger, some wealthy Houston dude will walk in and lay down to buy his little Princess a Jeep after hers gets totaled.

Long time Allen Honda customer and I think I'm done with them. Fees, add ons and increasingly very inconsistent, erratic, and incompetent service. They used to be fantastic. No idea why they went downhill.

I went to John Eagle once. Salesman called and talked to my wife later in the week to tell her how much I loved the vehicle I test drove (I never spoke to him after the test drive and was unaccompanied on the test drive). Wanted to know when we were coming back.

While I had been there I saw two other customers get into arguments with him over things he had promised them that they didn't get.

Never went back.

Anytime there are dealer add ons, I don't even bother. Probably cost a couple of vehicle purchases in BCS alone.

I recently bought a pretty expensive used vehicle and while shopping all over the state, not one of the dealers had ANY dealer fees or extra add on's, the tide is turning rapidly and places like Allen Honda will not be able to do this much longer. I've dealt with them before, and I would never buy a car there.
How can they advertise one price, then when you get there, the new price is $10k more? How is that even legal?

Allen Honda tried to do this to us

We were looking for a used truck for our son

They had an older model that was clean with low miles. Price seemed reasonable

When we sat down to go over the numbers, they had added like $4k in "dealer services"
It was BS like glass coatings, stain guard on the seats, etc

We laughed and walked out

That's why I negotiate everything on the phone before I show up. The ones around here won't, for the most part. They want you to "come on down" so they can pull shady **** like this. They think if they can get you in there, and get you emotionally attached to the car, that you'll cave. Oldest sales tactic in the book. They also waste your time unnecessarily to further soak it to you, so you're just wanting to get out of there. My neighbor is a car sales guy at Allen. He drives a GMC Denali truck, and his wife an Escalade. That's all I need to know right there.

My rancher uncle used to stand by two old sayings when buying a truck.

1. Buy local
2. Pay cash

It blew his mind when I saved him $5,000 by making a few phone call to the big city volume dealers. If you want to pay cash then fine but you aren't getting a better deal either. His last excuse was that they service your vehicle better if you buy it there. No they don't. They don't care where you bought it at the service department. He never bought local again.

CS Ford tried to pull that stuff on us a few months ago on a new Expedition. I told them I was not paying for a single thing other than tax, title, and license.

After about the fourth time the salesman went back to "talk to his manager", I closed my folder and basically told my wife that it wasn't going to work. I was shocked when he came back, stuck his hand out, and said "we have a deal". Down $7k from where the "deal" started when we walked in.

My mom is 89 and has a 2006 Odyssey van. She drives very little and gets her oil changed once a year at Allen Honda.

Recently she complained about dust in her van and I asked her about the cabin air filter. She took it in on Thursday and they removed it and it was absolutely filthy. So their multi point inspection is a huge fail; it must have been years since the cabin filter was replaced.

It seems they just don't care if they sell any vehicles. They have a $5k market adjustment on a vehicle that is $2k under msrp in Houston. I just don't get it! They must have lots of buyers who do not research prices and just write a check.

I bought a 2018 xt5 in 2019 from there. It had been the best car ever. I even bought something from GM at one time under warranty:

My son and I change the oil on our vehicles. My wife had an unexpected trip out of town come up when the oil was due to be changed. She asked me to just take it to the quick oil change place at Allen Honda.

I took it over there. They were not super quick. The whatever-point inspection showed that one of the two license plate light bulbs in the back was out. They offered to replace it for me.

"How much?"

"It will be $25 to cover the bulb and labor"

"Seriously? It's $2 in parts and five minutes."

"Sir, that's what we have to charge"

"My car is the only one out there. Your guy has nothing going on. Nevermind, I'll grab a bulb at NAPA on the way home and take the five minutes to do it myself."

Haven't been back.
