feel sorry for Tom. He seems like a really good guy.

My wife taught Charles in 7th grade and she was not overly surprised when I informed her of the news. Seems he was a "character" even way back when.

I found this comment posted after the Houston Chronicle Article.

combined $10,000 bond for both raises a flag that on the list of clients is some judges and city officals that will close this case quickly and quitely.

It will be interesting to see if it will all just go away....

I find the reporting done by the local "news" outlets appalling. Why even mention Tom T. ?
He's the dad, not the perp. I feel for the man; anyone who has kids knows there is only so much you can do. Once they're of an age, it's all up to them.
Personally I do not know Tom Turbiville, have never met him and have only sporadically heard him, read his articles, etc.
As for this "dropping" or "going away" -- who knows. Depends upon how deep her client list drags through the politico in Houston. But one consolation, she probably wasn't a cheap hooker. Could have been a crack ho' on the streets....

I don't find this newsworthy either, he's not a public servant, not the mayor, not a judge.

I watched the newscast, I thought it was informative but they lost me when they said they called Tom for comment, wth for? He has nothing to do with it. Gimme a break KBTX.
Do they call the parents of other suspected criminals for comment?

How about you criticize that moron in office, ONE time.

I don't know TT but I know he does not deserve to be harassed about his grown kid.

Probably because as mentioned in the title, it was the son of a local celebrity. Maybe if those other criminals had parents that were public figures in BCS they would get called to. It's the way of the world.

A friend of an A&M Consolidated High School graduate arrested in what officials in Houston are describing as one of the city's largest prostitution rings said Tuesday that the accusations don't fit the person he knows.

Charles Fletcher Turbiville, 31, was friendly and outgoing, said Mike Fletcher, a College Station resident who's known Turbiville since fifth grade...

Stevens said the last time he saw Turbiville was in 2006, at their 10-year high school reunion.

"It was really surprising to hear about," Stevens said of the charges Tuesday. He remembered Turbiville as easygoing and fun-loving.

Seems to me if you run a prostitution ring that involves politicians and athletes, you're probably pretty friently, easy-going, fun-loving, or the clients wouldn't be using you.

And, what's with quoting a "friend" that hasn't seen you in 3 years?

Charles was a childhood friend of mine and although I don't think I've spoken a word to the guy in maybe 10 years I'm not at all suprised to hear the guy was on the wrong side of the law. Not a malicious person but definitely no saint.

I feel for the guy, too, but the same would have happened if it were Katie Couric or David Letterman's kid, except it would likely have been reported nationally and possibly even world wide.

I'm sure TT is suffering some embarrassment, but he didn't commit the crime and his Son will have to be responsible for his own actions.

On a more personal note, I, too, wish that our local media were above dragging folks through the mud. I also felt it was unnecessary to drag the names of the couple that were charged with public lewdness the other night, through the mud. Ultimately, I guess they'll have to own up to their stupidity as well.

The local media will justify their decision to print/air something by saying the public has a right to know, or some such variation. Or, they'll point to the amount of comments/forum chatter about it and use that as validation that they made the right decision. People are talking about it, so it must be newsworthy, right?

Well, no, not always. Sometimes it's just what used to be confined to gossipy conversations between neighbors or co-workers. It certainly doesn't fit the old 5 W's and 1 H (Who, What, Where, When, Why and How) formula journalists used to learn in school. I don't know what else to call it but "S" for Sad - a sad commentary on our society.

Tom T. is a great guy and does wonderful stuff for the BCS community.

However, the parents of the offender come into this type of story because unfortunately there have been numerous examples of famous parents (and sometimes regular parents) aiding and abetting their children in escaping prosecution. That's why the media points out the connection. (although I think it's a non-issue in this case)

This is a sensitive subject in Houston because there is an ongoing story about the daughter of a judge perhaps receiving special treatment and light punishment (4 months in jail) despite committing intoxicated manslaughter.

FYI I just noticed that DrudgeReport has the story now so it has unfortunately gone national.

It likely will stay to that way to varying degrees as people wait to see who the high profile athletes are. I'm sorry for Tom. This one is going to be a big deal for an extended period of time as info begins to get leaked by prosecutors and cops.

Tom is a great guy and I think it was totally ridiculous to drag him into this. The public statement he issued in response shows what a classy guy he is - "I love my children and I support them." Period.

I did a search on him because I couldn't remember which radio station[s] Mr. Turbiville worked for and found this write-up, which nicely sums up his career.

http://bush.tamu.edu/nonprofitspring09/

quote:
Tom Turbiville
Talk Radio Host

In 2008, Tom Turbiville observed 35 years in sports related businesses, starting in 1973 as sports editor of the Irving Daily News. For the past 15 years, he has been sports director for The Zone. Tom also served three and a half years as Texas A&M's sports information director under Jackie Sherrill. His first radio gig was as sports director at KAGG, Aggie 96 in Bryan/College Station. Tom has received 10 first-place recognitions from the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters for not only his work in sports but for his work the last nine years as producer and host of "Bravo Brazos Valley," a daily radio program that features positive stories of the people, programs, and events of the Brazos Valley. Tom is a co-host of WTAW's popular morning show, "The Infomaniacs." In addition, Tom serves with Dave South and Dave Elmendorf as sideline reporter for Aggie football games. He has also served as color commentator for A&M Consolidated football and as South's broadcast partner for Texas A&M baseball. For the last two years, he has been named Bryan/College Station's "Favorite Radio Personality" by "The Eagle Reader's Poll." Since 2005, Tom has been the producer and host of the weekly "Veterans of the Valley" TV show on Texas A&M's PBS affiliate, KAMU-TV. The show salutes and highlights the war stories of military veterans from the Brazos Valley. Tom and his wife Judy have three sons, two daughters-in-law, and five grandchildren. Most free weekends, they can be found spending time together in Port Aransas, where some day they hope to retire.

Edited to add: I almost didn't want to post this because I know a lot of us would prefer this to just fall off the front page, but I figured what the heck. Others have gone out of their way to drag his name through the muck for something his adult son has done, so why not give the man a break and focus on the highlights of his career and some of the positive things he has done. You will notice that he has chosen throughout his career, to highlight the positive things about this community, so why not do the same for him.

Saw this reported on Fox News Channel so its def gone national. Kind of hard to ignore since it's largest prostitution ring bust in the fourth largest city in America.

For those who object to the reporting of the relation to TT, would you feel the same way if it was the son of Mack Brown, Dan Rather, Rick Perry, or Barack Obama?

It's news because it's a national story and the perpetrater is from here.

I haven't heard ANYONE drag Tom Turbiville's name through the mud- every single coment seems to be in defense of Tom Turbiville against an imaginary accuser.

Tom did nothing wrong, I think that is very clear.

the mom should have 'no commented' for the story, but c'mon....whats KBTX's infatuation with dragging the parents into this story?

it shows a severe lack of integrity on KBTXs part to try and drag a couple who have been described by MANY as good good people into this mess. the perp was an adult and his parents dont control every move his anymore. gimme a break. KBTX should be ashamed.

If there's no list, how do we know that there may be one doctor? And since there are apparently no athletes and lawyers, does that absolve them of the whole thing?

From what I've read about this: from dealing in metals and venture capital to now being in real estate but having expired licenses, the whole thing sounds sketchy to say the very least.

Edited. Stupe is right, I was being insensitive.

I don't see a "severe lack of integrity". Did you read Mike's blog? The local connection couldn't just be ignored, and it certainly hasn't been exploited.
Kitten With A Whip
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That bit on Mike Wrights blog was nothing more than sugar coating. From all indications, the national coverage of the story, without the names of the parents, was newsworthy on its own. TT's name didn't have to be a part of the story and subsequent follow-ups. If the local connection needed to be made, stating that Charles Turbiville was from the BCS area would have been sufficient.

Yeah, sure it would.

It wouldn't have been discussed here, right, since it would be improper to associate Tom with Charles?
