Hey guys, I don't post often, but frequent the thread and always appreciate all of the sharing and respect for each other. Class of '96 CT in San Antonio.

We've been a golden family for 25 years and are now on our fifth golden who is a seven month male stud named Cash. Yes, after the Cashius. He has two half brothers all from the same breeder out of Wisconsin. I've never neutered any of our boys and would rather not unless a health concern arises.

That said, our awesome little bear pup only has one nut. The other is retained. The vet said to neuter. I shared my concerns and asked if we could only remove the retained nut even if for a few more years until he fully develops and she said I would need a repro vet. I assume a reproductive vet.

Can any of you please recommend a reproductive vet in the SA and surrounding area. Thank you in advance -jw

I don't have an answer for you but damn, that's a great looking pup! Do you mind sharing the breeder's name?

What are your concerns?

The cryptorchid (retained) testicle needs to be removed. It's ok to wait to a year or year and a half to do it if you want to do so. But it has a higher risk of cancer and it's not worth it.

Goldens long coat conceals the scrotum, so you won't see a cosmetic issue unless he's on his back. If it really bothers you get him a neuticle (spelling?) to match his normal testis.

Or just do like most would recommend and neuter him completely and get the cryptorchid testis at that time.

You've got options.

Should have named him Juan. Juan Pelota.

Many (most?) vets will not remove just the cryptorchid testicle as this leaves the ability to reproduce and cryptorchidism is thought to have a genetic component. The only real medical argument for not removing the normal testicle is if he's under 12 months of age which has been shown to be detrimental for the skeletal development of Goldens.

If he's over 12 months, I'd get both taken, no question. If he's much under, leaving both or going back for the normal later isn't unreasonable. If he's close, I'm not sure there's much point in 2 separate surgeries, so I'd do both.

We went through this with a rescue (mini schnoodle) and the vet said in no uncertain terms, remove them both and move on. It took a while for his stomach scar to heal but now he is doing great and the checkups are all fine.

Buddy had a Chessie with this "problem" vet said neuter at 6mo. Since back then I was working in a animal hospital he called me and my Doc said give it some time. Sure enough at 10 months it dropped. Like Boog's said...you have options.

I don't think u need a repro vet but u may need an older wiser vet. The retained testicle will need to be removed, most the time both are removed at the same time. It's really no harder to just remove the retained testicle though, do not really know of any studies saying that this is a genetic type of event.

Any reasonably skilled Vet should be able to do this surgery, no specialist required.

I had a black lab that only had one. His other never dropped. The Vet said he'd have a higher risk of cancer & I had both removed.

Thanks for all of the responses and humor.

I understand the logic of the genetic potential to pass along this undesirable trait and the health concerns if untreated. We're not breeding him and unfortunately all of our dudes will die virgins.

I do however want him to fully develop as a masculine male with all of those characteristics…a lean muscular bad ass. Yes he'll mark in the yard and hump my seven year old nephew and each other, but I'm fine with those things.

My primary concern is a fat lazy golden with no drive. I'm cool if he's Juan Pelota (well done btw). I just want to find a vet that would remove the retained nut and leave the Juan Pelota there indefinitely or until something surfaces. These guys are like children, but unfortunately you're lucky to get 8-10 years out of them.

Any suggestions on such a vet in the SA or surrounding area or beyond? Thanks in advance guys and have a great weekend-jw

My golden was neutered at about 18months. Still humps his favorite bed from time to time. He loves to chase squirrels, and finally caught one last week. He weighs about 69lbs, so not overweight or lazy. I don't feed him table scraps. He gets 3 cups of ProPlan salmon and rice per day. I give him 1 1/2 cup morning and evening floated in water.

Most of the regulars in here will talk about shooting animals in the nuts. Really surprised no one has offered to shoot the invisible nut.

Best repro vet I know is in Brenham. Watermark Vet Clinic... Dr. Burbridge or Dr. Tatum. EXCELLENT surgeons.
