Is there any tricks to help ears after flying besides the regular gum chewing, yawning …etc. Maybe a before flight and after remedy.

Something like Vicks Sinex nasal spray with oxymetazoline in it for short term relief. Guaifenesin prior to flying and stay hydrated.

I mean the easiest way is to hold your nose and pop your ears to equilize the pressure. Not sure how to explain how to do it .. maybe look on YouTube

Doesn't help that's the first thing I do. I think I'll just push through it. Problem is it lasting hours after landing. Guess I'm getting old. I have 2 more flights on Sunday.

Valsalva Maneuver is what you are trying to describe. But whether it works depends on if the ears are over or under pressurized. If you are clear on the way up while ascending, and then the eustachian tube gets plugged on the way back down, it can be from mucus getting forced into the eustachian tube. Using the Valsalva in that instance will just push the mucus further in. The guaifenesin acts (with proper hydration) to make the mucus more runny and easier to drain out and the oxymetazoline works to reduce inflammation and open up the sinuses and breathing passages to let them clear easier.

Simulated yawning sometimes works

Open mouth as wide as possible

It all depends on what my allergies are doing

You're not doing it correctly most likely… it's instant and immediate relief. See the post above, hopefully that helps …. I learned the procedure years ago and use it sometimes when diving

Probably explains it. I have been congested and dehydrated. Thanks, I be sure to drink more before I fly.

If you try the above:

besides opening the mouth as wide as possible, also put tension on your lower jaw, then force it forwards and down, as far as possible. This movement stretches your eustachian tubes. Force your lower jaw as far as you can, and this will often force the tubes open and thereby allow pressure equalization.

That's what I do when I fly, and since I have just under 2500 flight hours, I've done this a lot.

I use an ear drying aid about once a week- like swim ear. 5 or so drops in each ear and then I put half a Kleenex in for a couple minutes before discarding. Always do it the day of a flight. Seems to help keep my ears clear.

I drink a crap ton of water before and during flying. Also take expectorant to loosen any goo.
I just have to pee a bunch.

I've had 7 ear surgeries over the years and have trouble with pressure when flying. I had an ENT doctor suggest a routine of over-the-counter allergy medicine (Zyrtec or Allegra), Afrin 12 hour, no drip, decongestant pump mist a couple hours before and right before take off. I also chew gun while flying. I still have trouble some times, but not nearly what I had in the past without this routine.

I use good ear plugs. Put them in prior to cabin door closes and leave them till landing.

Good news. Bought the earplane plugs and had no issues on both flights today. I also took a decongestant because I was a little sick the last week or so. I did have plenty of fluids last night. The best news is I'm back home in Texas!!
Thanks for all the advice.
